How does it work?Monash courses include compulsory units (which you mustdo), and many offer elective units (which you can choosebased on your interests). In a double degree, your compulsory units in one degreeform the electives from the other, and vice versa. So youllstill study the compulsory units to complete each course,(four units per semester), but the units you study will counttowards both degrees. Its a double degree without double the time!
Why study a double degree?Monash has one of the most comprehensive double degreeprograms in Australia, offering combined degrees acrossall faculties and disciplines. A double degree allows you tostudy for two degrees, giving you more career exibility andopportunities. And in most cases, youll only have to add oneextra year to your degree. A double degree also gives you theopportunity to explore subjects from a different discipline andgives you more career opportunities when you graduate.
You can combine the Bachelor of Economics with degrees in Arts and Commerce. Here are just some of the advantages:
Combining a Bachelor of Commerce with a Bachelor ofEconomics gives you the opportunity to do a triple majorin economics, accounting and nance. This is a popularcombination of skills/knowledge that is highly valued byemployers.Combining a Bachelor of Commerce with an Arts degreemeans that you can continue to study a language orpick up a new one. Arts offers more than 20 differentareas of study, so youll have plenty of options, andmajors like politics or geography can be particularlybenecial if you have ambitions in international business, politics or diplomacy.
Why study economics?Economics is the analysis of the economy and thefactors that inuence it, including growth, ination andunemployment. A great economist uses ideas, data andmodels to uncover the workings of the economy. Our degrees offer core units that introduce you to the keyprinciples of economics. These units help you understandhow the microeconomic decisions of individuals, businessand government inuence the macroeconomic behaviour ofthe economy.

What is the difference between adouble major and a double degree?
A double major is when you specialise in two different areaswithin one degree, (for example accounting and internationalbusiness, or marketing and economics). In a double majoryou will study eight units from each discipline area anddevelop strong knowledge in both elds.
A double degree allows you to study two separate degrees atthe same time. The double degrees are structured to enableyou to graduate with both awards in a much shorter timethan it would take to complete the two degrees individually(usually four years). As well as graduating with two degrees, you will also possess a greater knowledge of both disciplineareas, because you will have studied additional units in thosedisciplines, but youll have the same workload as a singledegree course.
