SIUE is a dynamic, vibrant academic community dedicated to enhancing the quality of life for our region. As a state-supported university, we also have a role in expanding the labor force, tax base, and economy in Southwestern Illinois and beyond. SIUE is a

catalyst promoting progress within the metropolitan region. The University’s impact on the surrounding area is evident whether the focus is on housing markets, local business, work force quality or the academic achievements of community citizens.

This economic impact study is an updated version of the 2005 report and reflects the continued momentum of our institution. For fiscal year 2010, SIUE had a total economic impact of $471 million on the region. Following are a few of the many ways in which the University serves as an economic engine:

• As the second largest employer in Southwestern Illinois, SIUE employs more than 2,400 full-time faculty and staff and also provides jobs for thousands of community workers through its practices and contracted projects.

• Of the University’s 85,000 alumni, more than half live and work within a 50-mile radius of campus, armed with highly informed labor skills. They are employed in a variety of industries bringing with them the values taught at SIUE, values that enhance the quality of life for all: Citizenship, Excellence, Integrity, Openness and Wisdom.

• In fiscal year 2010, SIUE faculty and staff received more than $28.7 million in grants and contracts for research, teaching and service initiatives. During the same period, the East St. Louis Center received $14 million in grant awards and applied those funds toward comprehensive programs, services and training for community residents.

• University Park SIUE Inc., a 330-acre technology park located on the SIUE campus, allows private sector business access to the intellectual capital of the University. The Park’s National Corn-to-Ethanol Research Center is a one-of-a-kind facility in the field of biofuel research.

With a total economic impact of more than $471 million (fiscal year 2010), SIUE significantly affects the broader regional economy. For every state dollar spent on the University, SIUE generates nearly $7 of economic impact in the local economy.

growth in challenging timesSince 2005, the St. Louis Metropolitan Area experienced a three percent increase in population, a 10 percent drop in personal income (adjusted for inflation) and a more than three percentage point increase in unemployment. Despite the challenging economy, SIUE’s total economic impact is increasing. The current impact is more than 32 percent greater than the University’s estimated impact in fiscal year 2005.

SIUE expenditures in the region on goods and services totaled nearly $66 million during fiscal year 2010. This includes spending by SIUE (including construction), the SIUE Foundation and money spent by insurance companies to medical providers on behalf of SIUE employees.

generating BusinessVisitors’ Expenditures: $47 million

SIUE brings visitors to the region. More than 100,000 visitors attended SIUE sporting events, conferences and shows, or visited employees and students. Visitors spent nearly $47 million in the area. The resulting increase in business created more than 400 jobs in the area.

With nearly 2,500 full-time employees, SIUE is the second largest employer in the Madison-St. Clair County region. Including graduate assistants, student workers, and part-time and temporary workers, 5,749 people worked for SIUE during fiscal year 2010. Total payroll was more than $130 million.

Each year, SIUE employees, students and annuitants spend nearly $230 million in the region. In fiscal year 2010, more than 3,000 jobs were created by the expenditures of SIUE and its students, employees, annuitants and visitors.

More than half of SIUE’s 85,000 alumni live in the region. Approximately 9,200 students – more than two-thirds of the student population – would not be living in the St. Louis Metro Area if not for SIUE.


generating growthTax Revenue Generated by SIUE: $23 million

SIUE generated nearly $23 million in state and local tax revenues in fiscal year 2010. Slightly more than 65 percent of these revenues came from taxes paid by University households (employees, students and annuitants) and the businesses these households patronize. Students living on campus are responsible for nearly $400,000 of state reimbursement to the city of Edwardsville.

a Valued assetThe University: Valued at more than $886 million

The value of SIUE’s buildings, infrastructure and land, combined with the ever-expanding University Park, Alton campus and East St. Louis Center surpasses $886 million. The University spent more than $130 million on construction projects in the past five years.


aBout siueSIUE is a growing Metropolitan University with more than 14,000 students enrolled. Founded in 1957, SIUE is a fully accredited public institution – beautifully situated in Edwardsville on 2,660 acres just 25 miles from St. Louis.

SIUE awards degrees in 44 undergraduate and 68 graduate programs encompassing the arts and sciences, nursing, education, business and engineering. The Schools of Dental Medicine and Pharmacy award professional degrees in dental medicine (D.M.D.) and in pharmacy (Pharm.D.). SIUE is a member of the Ohio Valley Conference.

The main campus includes University Park, a research park established to support economic development. The Edwardsville campus is supplemented by campuses in East St. Louis and Alton.

in fall 2010, siue reached the largest overall enrollment in the history of the university with 14,133 students. the new freshman class of 2,065 is up from 1,748 in 2005, representing the largest group of new freshmen in siue’s history.


points of pride Washington Monthly, a national political magazine, ranks SIUE among the Top 50 master’s granting private and public colleges and universities in the nation; SIUE is 14th among public institutions on that list. Ratings are based on institutions’ commitment to the public good in three broad categories: Social Mobility, Research and Service.

U.S.News & World Report America’s Best Colleges 2011 edition recognizes SIUE for numerous achievements:

• For the second consecutive year, SIUE has been cited by its peers and reported in U.S. News as an “up and coming school.” The University is listed as one of 68 national universities and one of only three Midwestern regional universities for recently making “innovative changes in the areas of faculty, student life, campus life and facilities.”

• For the sixth consecutive year, SIUE is listed in the capstone experience category, among 15 universities – including Brown, Princeton and Stanford – for its comprehensive Senior Assignment program measuring the competency of graduating seniors.

• SIUE is among the top 20 public universities in the best Regional Universities Midwest (master’s granting) category for the seventh consecutive year. The overall scores are based on the academic preparedness of students, graduation rates, faculty characteristics and the reputation of SIUE in higher education.

The nationally recognized online news magazine, The Daily Beast, ranks SIUE 21st in the nation among its Top 50 Safest Colleges. SIUE police officers are academy trained and engaged in a Community Policing program. Under the SIUE Campus Violence Prevention Plan, there are more than 80 emergency phones on campus.


GI Jobs Magazine, a comprehensive guide for people transitioning out of the U.S. military, named SIUE a Military Friendly School for 2011. This honor places SIUE in the top 15 percent of all schools nationwide in offering programs and support for veteran and active duty military personnel.

A total of 2,152 SIUE students engaged in 23,019 hours of community service through volunteer efforts during 2009. The students’ commitment earned them a spot on the 2009 President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll.

School of Dental Medicine students manage approximately 35,000 patient visits each year at patient clinics in Alton and East St. Louis. In addition, students offer oral health treatment, screenings and education to more than 10,000 people annually through a wide variety of off-campus community outreach events.

Offering comprehensive programs, services and training to more than 6,000 people annually, the SIUE East St. Louis Center is dedicated to improving the lives of families and individuals in East St. Louis and surrounding urban communities.

the only center of its kind in the world, the NceRc offers analytical and fermentation labs, pilot scale ethanol production processes and workforce training.


adVancing the regionSIUE is committed to the economic development of the region. University Park SIUE Inc., a 330-acre technology park located on the SIUE campus, provides a unique opportunity for private sector emerging industries and businesses to enhance their competitive positions through beneficial relationships with the University. Tenants have on-site access to a variety of resources available through SIUE: technical assistance, marketing research, business management, faculty consulting and student employees.

• Jim Pennekamp, special assistant to the Chancellor for regional economic development and executive director of University Park, works with faculty and industry to coordinate mutually beneficial economic development relationships in the region.

• University Park is home to the National Corn-to-Ethanol Research Center (NCERC), which facilitates the commercialization of new technologies for producing ethanol more effectively, resulting in improved ethanol yields and reduction in costs.

• The American Red Cross selected SIUE’s University Park as the site for its new, state-of-the-art, Midwest Regional Headquarters and National Testing Laboratory, and will bring with it more than 500 new jobs.
