He loves travelling, exploring

places, clicking photographs

and making new connections.

While riding down the slope on my bicycle from Kanheri Caves, drizzles

bestowed upon me the peace, tranquility and some faded memories. The

memories.. the memories of my childhood days, I took the bicycle on the road

during downpour and got wet. The sweet scent of sand filled my nostril with

an aroma undefined, magic unseen and serenity uncontrolled. I just want to

go home, my inner instinct whispered to me, for a holiday to ride bicycle again

on those waterlogged roads, for a couple of days to relive those moments.

How I wished, I could … Only if wishes were horses..!! I know I can’t time

travel and go back in the past, but yes riding down Kanheri Caves in the rain

did make me feel Like It Happened Yesterday.

The first time you confess someone that you like her and then thinking about

something which is never going to happen. All those words said, and some left

unsaid still makes me feel Like It Happened Yesterday.

During college days, each one of us had a tight budget. With that tight budget,

heading out with a bunch of friends and locating the economical restaurant

makes me feel Like It Happened Yesterday. Yes, we did find one. The Indian

Coffee House. It was best suited for our budget and the flavor of dosa is still

afresh deep down inside me. How we used to order different snacks and then

grab the piece from each other’s plate: Like It Happened Yesterday.

First day at office, the mesmerizing eyes which I saw at the other end of the

corridor still makes me feel Like It Happened Yesterday.

There are many other things which makes each one of us feel Like It

Happened Yesterday. Therefore, it is always better to jot them down. So that,

one day you might find it lying somewhere in between your office files and the

reminiscence of those imprinted words will carve out a smile and make you

feel how fast the time flies but it still feels Like It Happened Yesterday.

L ike It Happened Yesterday

3

I feel like it was yesterday, when I

entered into my first class, I wore

my first dress, I rode my first

bicycle, I went to my first college, I

attempted my first exam and

many more incidents. The list is

never ending and can not be

forgotten. However, there are

many things, which keep dangling

around in our mind for no reason.

“Those mesmerizing

eyes at the far end of the office

corridor still makes me feel

Like It Happened

Yesterday!”

Surabhi Kinariwala

She started her Toastmasters

journey 8 months ago and is

enjoying every moment of it.

She likes writing and at Toast-

masters it makes her happy

when people hear what she

writes.

Binary world and Music are

her companions. She has re-

cently developed interest in

football and her team won

Standard Chartered Corpo-

rate Soccer Tournament held

across Mumbai.

I nnocent Inspirations Think about your fondest and most

beloved memory.

For a brief moment, feel the way you

felt then. Think about the thoughts

that you had, take in the people

around you, and just let yourself be

absorbed by this one special moment.

Did the memory that make you smile

also make you wonder whether you

could be a child again??

If yes, then we are on the same page. I

love to be around kids and observe

them. I truly believe that they

unknowingly give us simple solutions

for life’s biggest problems.

I will share a few examples from my

observations and learning.

* Fight but Forgive:

As children we never gave up trying to

be the first one to bat in a game of

cricket or to prove that our doll is the

prettiest one among all our friends.

Even as adults we try harder to get

what we think we deserve, the only

difference being that we quit a little

early now. I also remember how easily

I would resolve a fight with my friends

without holding grudges against

them. Forgiving my siblings or friends

just for a kiss and hug from my mother

was the biggest achievement.

The price we pay for being matured

adults is a pure heart.

4

* Be Fearless

My nephew has a record of breaking

toys or anything that he has access to,

each day. He also holds a degree in

discovering different ways to bruise

himself.

Getting hurt or breaking toys is not

what I learn from the kiddy, being

fearless of the consequences is what

he teaches me. To be more precise, I

am talking about the many fears that

we humans learn over the course of

our lives, fears that are simple illusions

like the fear of the unknown, fear of

being judged, fear of rejection and the

fear of what the future might bring.

One of the secrets to achieve success

and happiness is to do what we want

to without the fear of failure and

criticism.

* Be oneself

As a child, it always made us unhappy

when someone enacted the same

character as we did in a fancy dress

competition.

As adults we are stuck in a world with

people having herd mentality, where

almost everyone wants to be the best

but only a few dare to take a different

path.

“Don't dare to be different, dare to be yourself - if that doesn't make you different then something is wrong.”

Page 5: E_communique! oct2013

5

We compare our life with that of our friends, colleagues

and relatives and mourn on our life being the saddest.

We tend to change ourselves in the peer pressure. All

these actions lead to only life getting more miserable

each day.

A child always wants to be different than what his

companions are. They teach us to be individuals in

thoughts and deeds and not imitate others. As kids even

identical twins want to look different, we are still

different individuals.

Don't dare to be

different, dare to be

yourself - if that doesn't

make you different then

something is wrong.

* Believe in God and his

miracles

Santa Claus, Harry Potter,

Krissh, Doraemon!!

Do they exist in the real

world?

I can bet my life on it that no adult however smart or

educated he/ she is can prove to a child that these things

are just imaginary characters.

A child believes in God as told by his elders and he trusts

that there is a divine power to protect him from all

harms. The power of imagination that children are

blessed with and the belief they have in magic and

miracles makes them the world's most happy, adorable

and lucky beings.

Keep an Open Mind – A child’s mind is wide open to all

that world has to offer. Kids make most of their

judgments strictly based on first hand experience. Few

external influences are present in their lives long enough

to poison their judgment, but they are always ready to

try something new.

As we hit adulthood we become creatures of habit,

comfortable in the familiarity of our surroundings. We

shy away from anything with an unfamiliar taste. In

doing so, we walk away from numerous opportunities

and positive experiences.

A mind is like a parachute. It works only when it is open.

* Be Happy and Enjoy Life’s Simple Pleasures

Put a kid in a puddle and watch him

cheerfully splash around. Give a kid

permission to chase the cat around

the house for a couple of minutes,

the giggles will be contagious. Or

just tickle a kid until he is beet red

from laughter. All of these are

simple things that children love to

partake in. It should serve as a

reminder that some of the best

things in life are free.

“A child can teach an adult:

1. To be happy for no reason.

2. To be busy with something,

3. To know how to demand with all his might that

which he desires.”

So next time you see a child, just smile back at him and

say Thank you.

“A mind is like a parachute, it works only when it is open.”

A nyone Can Design! “An artist is not paid for his labor but for his vision” James Whistler

I truly believe in this and also that "Anyone can design" just like Gusteau's motto,

"Anyone can cook" from the Ratatouille movie. Since my childhood days I was

inclined towards sketching, painting and rendering. Whenever I would find leisure

time, I would watch cartoons and try to sketch those characters and paint with

water colors.

I always loved the paintings rendered with water colors because they exhibited

the clear thought process of the artist as how the image needs to be painted. I

used to help my school mates and college friends in their sketching assignments,

which helped me in developing my skills and I used to felt delighted. I design

things because I am immensely passionate about creativity, art and beauty. I nev-

er imagined that my passion towards creativity and art will provide me such an

admiration and respect from people after seeing my artworks.

I really value the appreciation and criticism provided on my designs and artworks

from the spectators. This provides me insights to improve my work and also moti-

vates me to create and design new things and artworks with better challenges to

be faced in terms of creativity, ideas and design. My commitment towards my

love that is to design is indestructible. I completed Diploma in Commercial Arts

and worked as Graphic Designer in different Design Studios.

TCS gave me an awesome opportunity to design applications for mobile platforms

like iOS, Android and Windows. I take pride to say that the marathon applications

like Standard Chartered Mumbai Marathon, TCS World 10K aka Bangalore Mara-

thon, TCS Amsterdam Marathon, BOA Chicago Marathon and BMW Berlin Mara-

thon are some of the packaged projects designed by me.

Shatabdi Paul

Witty by nature, an absolute

day dreamer was born in the

Hoogly District of West Ben-

gal. Loves music which is like

a drink for her soul. Breathe

movies as she feel the charac-

ters of the movie and like

blood, design flows in her.

A total Mumbaikar who never

stops even after seeing a road

block .

7

Page 8: E_communique! oct2013

I had the privilege of designing the TCS Rajasthan Royals mobile app. The feed-

back from the end users which are displayed on the Apple Appstore or Google

Play Store is crucial to me. I am a Certified Usability Analyst from Human factors

International. This helped me in understanding the usability and now I am advo-

cating usability in my work and in my team to ensure that designed applications

are more usable for the end users.

I am also grateful to TCS Maitree Toastmasters Club, Mumbai that I could show-

case my talent and creativity in the mailers that were designed based on the

theme of the sessions.

If you have the passion to do anything, you will succeed anyway no matter what-

soever challenges are put on your path.

Way back in 2011 when she

joined TCS, little did she know

that the organization had

something else to offer her

other than coding.

Full of positive thoughts and

attitude, Namrata loves trav-

elling and meeting people.

She loves to experiment in life

and believes in improving

herself by each passing day

Q ualitative v/s Quantitative

The months of spring; March and September usher with aureate ambiance for

the world but for the better part of the world it’s time for renewals of

Toastmasters membership.

“Submit on time (both required) October or April dues renewal “,”Add Four

new members “ “Add Four new more members “ 3/10 goals achieved for the

Distinguished Club program (DCP) .

Retaining the quantity of members especially in a Corporate Club is a real test

for the Club and the VPM in particular. While increasing the membership

strength is a challenge, levitating and maintaining the quality of club sessions is

a strenuous task. In a hoard to achieve the DCP goals or the coveted Golden

gavel, at times the clubs start focusing on reaching goals rather than achieving

the objectives.

A club’s standards for service must reflect the quality and reliability of the

Toastmasters program. Talking about quality, it is the standard of something as

measured against other things of a similar kind. It is also about meeting the

needs and expectations or it simply is fitness to the purpose.

Toastmasters’ annual measure for successful, quality clubs is the DCP but the

sessions, role plays, speeches, training programs and workshops, all should align

with the mission statement of Toastmasters International; empowering

members to become better orators and leader resulting in greater self-

confidence and personal growth. A well planned, attended and executed

meeting will inspire members to join and will ultimately lead to the Club’s

growth.

To raise the quality bar in a club:

10

Add new members constantly to ensure inflow of fresh views and new ideas.

Do not count on past achievements to ensure continued success.

Along with speeches give weightage to evaluations and feedbacks.

Introduce elements of innovation and surprise in sessions to ensure sustainability of members and guests.

And finally create a positive and encouraging Club environment.

Let’s not just keep adding members or keep increasing the frequency of the sessions, let’s focus on the qualitative

growth of a club where every member is just not rushing towards achieving awards but becomes a better leader and a

better orator by every passing speech and role he undertakes. Let’s live and do not just exist and focus on precocity

rather than on numbers.

As Winston Churchill said, “Courage is rightly esteemed the first of human qualities because it is the quality which

guarantees all others.” Your courage in championing high-quality meetings will result in achieving your goals to

become a better speaker and leader, and the club’s goal of being Distinguished… and beyond.

A movie buff, a gamer, and a

so called "IT Professional", an

apparently quiet yet active

person, he loves to enthrall

people around with his subtle

sense of humor.

As an ex-VP-Education, he

feels elated to see people

fight for roles/speaker slots

for Club sessions. For him,

Toastmasters is a culture, a

learning hub and a way of life.

As he always says, "Once a

Toastmaster, forever a Toast-

master".

e asy-Speak Before we dig ourselves into what, when and where of easy-Speak, let me ask

two questions:

My first question is to the members of the Executive Committee of your Club:

How do you manage your Club’s meetings, and how easy is it to keep everyone

informed on the latest happenings?

And, my second question is to members who are not part of the Executive Com-

mittee: How easy is it to book a role for your Club’s next meeting, and get a con-

firmation about the same?

We will answer these questions, but let’s see where Toastmasters is heading to-

wards. A couple of months back, a mail from Toastmasters International popped

up in my mailbox. The mail was about the changes about to come in Toastmasters

International’s Education program. Use of online tools for enhancing the Club

experience is also part of the plan. And thus my first potential opportunity of in-

troducing easy-Speak to you and your Club.

easy-Speak is an automation tool for Toastmasters Clubs to help manage Club

business effectively. You might ask how, so here is a list of some of the features

of easy-Speak, and what it can do for your Club:

Meeting management: Create and edit meetings; delegate meeting rights; cus-

tomize agenda for special events; assign mentors (all it takes is one click); Assign

Communication and Leadership goals to members; approve/reject meeting roles.

A Club can add multiple locations too.

Membership management: Manage list of members, visitors, guests etc.; man-

age member profiles; send mails to a particular set of Toastmasters or guests; use

easy-Speak for promoting Toastmasters

Before we end, let me get back to those two questions:

If your answer to the first question is one of these – mail chains, Whatsapp, or

Facebook events – my friend, you are living in the Stone Age of the Automation

Era.

If your answer to the second question is one of these – “I did book, but my role

did not get confirmed”, “I often face trouble booking role” or “Some variation of

the first two answers” – my friends, easy-Speak is here to solve all your issues. 11

T wo Sides of Branding

If your last birthday cake was flooded with candles, chances are that

you believe more in content. However if you had fewer candles, it

suggests that probably you believe more in packaging.

For ages, people and businesses were judged by their content - what

they were made of. Strong foundations, sound business practices, and

good fundamentals were those that met the approval of the people.

Packaging was considered just an option extra that completed an

otherwise perfect picture.

As people and markets have evolved, so have the evaluation processes.

Today, packaging has taken center-stage and is inseparable from the

person, product or service. And there’s where branding makes a

compelling presence.

The evaluation processes have turned full circle. If you don’t make the

right first impression, or don’t tick the right boxes in the minds of the

people, you don’t move to the next level in their mind space. You don’t

make the cut. You are simply abandoned.

While this is true on an elementary level, it doesn’t stop there. Brands

are getting more sensory and real. People are defining which brands

they want to be seen with and those they don’t. So marketers are

spending the midnight oil to get into their mind spaces and eventually

seek their acceptance.

Branding has now to shoulder the entire burden of breakthrough. It

can make or break the marketability of a person, product or service

that is full of promise inside. It has to create an external appeal that will

induce people to break the shell and look inside.

12

What’s more important? Content or Packaging

Distinguished Club

Program What is the Distinguished Club pro-

gram?

The Distinguished Club Program

(DCP) is a recognition program

administered by Toastmasters In-

ternational (TI). TI tracks the pro-

gress of clubs in meeting educa-

tional and membership goals and

recognizes clubs based on the num-

ber of goals achieved during the

period July 1 through June 30. Clubs

can achieve 10 possible goals.

How does participation in the

Distinguished Club Program ben-

efit my club?

The DCP works hand-in-hand with

the club mission by providing a

structured, supportive meeting

environment that is productive and

fun for all the members. As mem-

bers set and meet educational

goals, they develop confidence and

critical communication and leader-

ship skills, inspiring others to do the

same. The club‘s focus on individual

and collective achievement also

helps build team spirit and club

pride that is infectious and self-
