ECOLOGY: The study of interactions among living and nonliving things ABIOTIC FACTORS Non-living factors Soil, temp., precipitation BIOTIC FACTORS Living factors Plants & animals Biotic vs Abiotic Factors Biotic = living (BIO = life) Abiotic = nonliving Biotic factors are all of the living things in an environment. Abiotic factors are all of the nonliving things in an environment. Biotic vs Abiotic Factors Environment Biotic FactorsAbiotic Factors Biotic vs Abiotic Factors Environment Biotic FactorsAbiotic Factors Animals, plants, people, birdsWater, sunlight, soil, rocks, wind, temperature Biotic or Abiotic? Biotic! Biotic or Abiotic? Abiotic! Biotic or Abiotic? Biotic! Biotic or Abiotic? Abiotic! Biotic or Abiotic? Abiotic! All organisms are whatbiotic or abiotic? Biotic! What are all the biotic and abiotic things in this picture? Do biotic and abiotic factors affect each other? If there is no watercan anything grow or survive? If it is extremely cold one winter, will that affect whether an animal makes it? Do biotic and abiotic factors affect each other? If there is no watercan anything grow or survive? No! If it is extremely cold one winter, will that affect whether an animal makes it? Yes! So, abiotic and biotic DO affect each other. Even though water and temperature arent living things, they DO affect living things! Ecosystems Abiotic Factors Non living parts of an ecosystem provide the nutrients and materials needed to support life Examples of living factors that need nonliving factors: Plants need water, nutrients and carbon dioxide Animals need water, oxygen and vitamins Ecosystems Biotic Factors Living These are organisms that exist in nature and provide balance in an ecosystem If some of the biotic factors of an ecosystem dies, what happens to the rest of the system? Can cause an increase or increase in other organisms Heres an example of what happens if a biotic factor dies: If a fire moves through a forest, the birds fly will away, the trees will burn, the air will be smoky, but the soil will become enriched with nutrients If a fire moves through a forest, the birds fly will away, the trees will burn, the air will be smoky, but the soil will become enriched with nutrients Guided Practice Organize the following words into TWO lists, Abiotic and Biotic Factors: Clouds Sunlight Sand Ph of soil Air Wind Soil Rain Mud Rocks Ice Oxygen Minerals Mountain Temperature Lake Volcanoes Moon Gold Fire Weather Climate Tulip Bumblebee Moss Leaf Raccoon Polar Bear A cell Deer Maple tree Raspberry bush Goldfish People Eagle Snake Earthworm Corn on the plant Salamander Guided Practice Organize the following words into TWO lists, Abiotic and Biotic Factors: BioticAbiotic Clouds Sunlight Sand Ph of soil Air Wind Soil Rain Mud Rocks Ice Oxygen Minerals Mountain Temperature Lake Volcanoes Moon Gold Fire Weather Climate Tulip Bumblebee Moss Leaf Raccoon Polar Bear A cell Deer Maple tree Raspberry bush Goldfish People Eagle Snake Earthworm Corn on the plant Salamander SPECIES A group of organisms so similar that they breed and produce fertile offspring POPULATION Individuals that belong to the same species and live in the same area COMMUNITY All of the different populations that live and interact in the same environment. ECOSYSTEM All the communities that live together with the abiotic factors in the same environment. Ecosystems Combination of biotic and abiotic factors in an environment Levels of Organization Species-> Populations-> Communities-> Ecosystem-> Biome-> Biosphere Small-> Large Ecosystem : collection of organisms that live in the same area together with their nonliving environment. Biome : a large group of ecosystems that have the same climate and biotic factors BIOSPHERE The combined parts of the lithosphere, hydrosphere & atmosphere where life exists. The living part of the world Why should we care about the biosphere? It provides the food we eat, the plants we grow and oxygen to breathe Why should we take care of the biosphere? Without the services that the biosphere provides, we would be dead. Biosphere Biosphere The living part of the world Biomes Specific types of ecosystems and environments that have certain types of climates and biotic factors Ecosystems The combination of the living and non living parts of an environment Community Different types of animals and plants that interact with each other in an ecosystem Population A group of animals/plants that live in one community Species A single type of organism Organism An individual life form Life on Earth is broken down into different levels Biomes Specific types of ecosystems and environments that have certain types of climates and biotic factors Types TundraDesertTaiga(Boreal)Grassland Temperate Deciduous Forest Tropical Rainforest Biomes will shape the types of organisms that are found in them Organisms are adapted to the ecosystems and biomes that they live in Different biomes have different amounts and types of organisms for various reasons: Tropical: will have more and different types of plants and animals Why? Animals and plants tend to grow and reproduce more in warmer, wetter climates Tundra: will have a smaller amounts and less variety of animals and plants Why? Colder climates have harsh conditions for plants to grow in, which means less food for animals Temperate forest: have larger human populations Why? Humans prefer milder climates Relationships in Biomes Warm-up Tell me a story of about how abiotic and biotic factors play a role in your life. For example, Everyday I wake up and brush my teeth with toothpaste. Then I say hi to my mom and eat a bowl of cereal. I change my clothes, feed the dog, and walk outside to catch the bus. Sometimes I hear birds chirping on the way. Abiotic factors: toothpaste, cereal, bus Biotic Factors: My mom, my dog, birds You need to include at least 3 abiotic factors and 3 biotic factors and list them at the end.
