Ecology Club Visits Wildlife Center

By Cinthia Sancho

HOB’s Ecology Club took a field trip to the Key West Wildlife Center on November 30. There, we learned about a bunch of different birds and even saw a turtle pond! We learned about rehabitization and what steps and precautions the staff have to take to make sure that the animals can transition back into the wild safely and progress there too.

Learning about these things was really cool and it was a great experience. Even though I was bait to bugs, it was worth it! Til’ the next one, Bucs!

Buccaneers Win First Home Game

By John Grimesey

The HOB Buccaneers completed a sweep of Sigs-bee Charter Tuesday night with a rather thrilling 23-15 win in the girls’ game that was followed by a slightly more routine matchup resulting in a 33-21 win for the boys.

On the girls’ side, a layup by Olivia Gibson gave Sigsbee a 16-15 lead with just over three minutes to play. The Bucs handled the pressure, however, by scoring the last eight points and taking the victory. The Bucs were led by Trecia Whetstone, who domi-nated inside play and ended the game with 12 points.

The boys used heavy defensive pressure by guard Jamari Walker to take an early lead and held on throughout. Andy Desir led the way with 16 points and matched up well against Sailfish big man Andre Otto-a standout Buccaneer on the football field.

Both the boys and girls will be on the home court again this Saturday starting with the girls’ game at noon with the boys following afterward. Key Largo School will be the opponent. KLS will then play Sigs-bee in the HOB gym to complete a full afternoon of quality basketball encompassing four games. The concession stand will be open and the Buccaneer Grill will be activated providing burgers and dogs dur-ing all games.

The History of Hanukkah By Ocean Coulson and Keona Gerwig

Every year the Jewish community converges to cele-brate the holiday of giving, and the commemoration of the Second Temple of Jerusalem who rose up against their Greek-Syrian oppressors of Seleucid Empire in the Maccabean Revolt, brave enough to have their tale passed on through Jewish legend: Hanukkah. The holiday is observed each year, according to the Hebrew calendar. Hanukkah beings on the 25th day of the third month, referred to as Kislev. The celebrations last for eight days. This year, Hanukkah began on De-cember 2nd and ends tonight, December 10th. Throughout the course of the eight days, participants of the holiday light one candle of the nine present on the menorah, every day. Alongside this, each day after light-ing a candle they would get some sort of present or ob-ject. This is a special holiday filled with lots of meaning and emotion.
