SUZANNE SOMMERS

SUPPORTS ECO RED SHIELDIn the early evening of January 8th, 2007, a carelessly discarded cigarette began a slow, smoldering fire in the hills of Malibu. With a mix of dry conditions, high temperatures and strong Santa Ana winds, the flames soon fanned into a major wildfire, whipping through residential neighborhoods and setting homes ablaze.

Because the fires broke out so close to Malibu Colony, home to a number of international celebrities, the events were immediately picked up by local and national media outlets. News helicopters circled the affected neighborhoods as the flames continued to advance, and film crews were rolling on the ground, streaming live images of the destruction.

Suzanne Somers, one of the Colony’s residents, watched her home burn to the ground on television. Because of the dangerous conditions, the fire soon engulfed her and her husband’s entire property,

reducing the entire building to embers in only a few short minutes. All of the couple’s possessions, memories - even their car - succumbed to the roaring flames.

The loss was devastating. The long-time actress and author was only able to find her wedding ring in the ash and soot that covered the earth where her home had once stood. Knowing first hand the power and unpredictability of residential fires, Somers and thousands of other families can attest to the importance of taking precautions to prevent such a total catastrophe. With Eco Red ShieldTM coating, home owners are offered the world’s first and only topical wood treatment to provide certified Class A protection

against fire, as well as protection from mold, wood rot, and termite damage.

There are other reasons Somers is an advocate of Eco Red

ShieldTM - namely, health. In 2000, Somers was

diagnosed with breast cancer and underwent

surgery to remove the tumor. She opted out of chemotherapy treatments, however, and instead devoted her time to finding effective alternatives to cancer treatments in addition to her growing health empire which included products and books centered on diet, exercise, and living well.

For someone who cares so much about the things that go into the human body, Somers knows the risks of most wood treatment products on the market. Eco Red ShieldTM, however, is GREENGUARD certified to achieve the highest and most stringent standards in indoor air quality, and is recognized to be safe for schools and hospitals. With its non-toxic, environmentally safe formula, Eco Red ShieldTM actually emits fewer volatile organic compounds (VOCs) than raw lumber, meaning its protection actually improves the air in your wood-built home. Having survived cancer and the devastation of a home fire, Somers uniquely understands the fire and health benefits of lumber protection from Eco Red ShieldTM - and wants others to hear the message, too.

have skyrocketed to nearly 30 percent. The men and women returning from the line of the duty are being faced with one of the most difficult economic climates of the last century, and few resources are available to help them make a successful transition back to civilian life.

The plight of our nation’s veterans prompted Eco Building Products to sound a clarion call for American businesses to commit to hiring returning veterans. By signing a pledge at Pledge2Vets.com and displaying their company logo, these businesses show their support to our returning soldiers by providing them with job opportunties across the country.

Page 16: ECOB World News - October 2012

15 October 2012

So far, the site has garnered over 10,000 job postings from companies representing nearly every industry. Along with these businesses, hundreds of individuals have also signed the pledge and added their names to ‘The Wall,’ a visible rallying point for those looking to prop up returning veterans. The pledge reads:

Thousands of American Veterans will soon be returning to our communities. Once again they will be our neighbors. They have offered their lives to defend our welfare and protect our freedoms. They have paid a tremendous personal price, and so have their families.

These men and women represent the best trained, most qualified workforce in the history of our nation. Yet, the reality they face when returning from duty is an entirely new battle. Their transition to the civilian workforce will be one of the most difficult challenges they have ever faced. They must know we have their back.

And let us remember all

of those who made the ultimate sacrifice and won’t be coming home. They must know that we will not forget.

It is not enough to know the right thing to do - we must take action. We ask for your support on their behalf. Together, we

can make a difference. Sign the wall. And then make a determined effort to honor every American Veteran.

Eco Building Products has already hired many unemployed veterans to help with their efforts to change the way the world builds with lumber, staffing coating plants across the country. As more businesses and individuals join together in pledging to relieve some of the challenges facing returning

soldiers, the push to transform the situation facing veterans is gathering

momentum. Join the movement today at Pledge2Vets.com.

2012 has already seen some of the most devastating outbreaks of forest fires in recent memory, with little relief in sight. Together with some of the warmest temperatures on record, the United States is experiencing the worst drought in the last fifty years, creating hazardous conditions across the country. The Mississippi River is approaching unprecedented levels - nearly twenty feet below normal - while the U.S. saw the warmest July on record this year. With scarce rainfalls and scorching heat, many wild areas are at significant risk of a burn.

So far this year, over four million acres have burned in wildfires, with more than 37,000 confirmed incidents. The Long Draw fire in southeast Oregon alone burned more than 560,000 acres of forest in July, the state’s largest wildfire since the 1840’s, while a large burn in Gila

National Forest, New Mexico destroyed more than 170,000 acres. Colorado also had one of its worst fire events in its history - burning nearly 90,000 acres and claiming one life, the High Park fire destroyed 259 homes and displaced thousands of residents as it made headlines in mid-June.

In addition to the cost of fighting the blazes, lost property, and the toll on human life, these fires represent large swathes of America’s forests going up in smoke. In the tragic catch-22 of improving wildfire fighting and prevention, many forests are growing increasingly unstable and prone to larger burns, as the once-frequent smaller events no longer clear the dead organic matter that fuel today’s large fires. Higher temperatures and below-average rainfall only exacerbate the threat to the United States’ remaining forests.

One way to protect our nation’s natural resources is to stem our demand of lumber related products. Through its unique protection coating systems, Eco Building Products extends the life of wood products by preventing wood

rot, mold, and termite damage, with the added benefit of fire inhibition. Also, by strongly supporting sustainable foresting techniques, Eco aims to help revolutionize the way companies harvest American lumber to more intelligently manage our natural resources and prevent major outbreaks of fires in the future.

FIRE BREAKTM

RELEASED BY ECO BUILDING PRODUCTS, INC.

27 October 2012

News: Fire BreakTM

Page 29: ECOB World News - October 2012

Hundreds of thousands of people are forced to evacuate their homes each year due to the threat of wildfire. With the speed at which these fires burn and the associated danger presented, homeowners usually have little to no time to protect their property or valuable possessions, and more often than not, lose both. What’s protecting you? What is Fire BreakTM and how does it work?

Fire BreakTM by Eco Building Products, Inc. has recently been launched, offering homeowners the ability to create a fire break around their property, well in advance of rapidly approaching fires, potentially saving their home and property from the

October 2012 www.ecob.net 28

Page 30: ECOB World News - October 2012

destruction caused by wildfire events. Fire Break was developed leveraging the Company’s FRCTM Technology allowing for the creation of one of the first Eco-Friendly fire inhibitors, composed of a water solution including proprietary ingredients, surfactant and Potassium Citrate. The formula has been engineered to dissolve in water, creating a fire-inhibiting solution, that when applied directly to vegetation or even a structure, it can do so without causing negative effects to your home and surrounding

environment. Fire Break is not only a fire inhibitor; it also possesses properties for use as vegetation fertilizer, making this home fire protection option absolutely eco-friendly.

The combustion reaction required for fire to exist can be characterized by four components: fuel, oxygen, heat, and an uninhibited chemical chain reaction. These four components have been classically symbolized by a four-sided solid geometric form called a tetrahedron: Fires can be prevented or suppressed

Page 32: ECOB World News - October 2012

by controlling or removing one or more of the sides of the tetrahedron. The active ingredients in Fire Break change the flammability of organic materials and other fuels by altering their combustibility when exposed to fire. In other words, the fuel source receives protection from the qualitative properties of Fire Break.

Wildfire spread is ordinarily caused by the rapid heating of organic materials, resulting in the release of combustible

Page 33: ECOB World News - October 2012

gases, which then ignite at a certain temperature (i.e. ignition temperature). These ignition temperatures may vary depending upon specific fuel type, quantities, fuel load, weather conditions, terrain and topography, and other variables inherent to rapidly changing wildfire conditions.

When fire reaches fuels that have been treated with Fire Break, the rapid increase in temperature causes the fuel surface

to change, releasing water. The release of water caused by this series of events absorbs the heat and actively cools the fire, while the active fire-inhibiting ingredient in Fire Break provides an added layer of protection ultimately depriving the fire of additional fuel it requires to advance. In other words, a fire break has been formed.

The fire inhibiting properties of Fire Break retain their active

Page 35: ECOB World News - October 2012

properties until they have been washed away by heavy rain, or other extinguishing agents. On the flip side, dry weather indicative of wildfire season, allows for Fire Break to remain effective long after you’ve evacuated your home and property. What’s protecting your home when you’re not?

ECO RED SHIELDTM SHOWCASED AT

KOREA’S 2012 BMC EXPOSITION

As demand for safer, structurally-sound building materials grows in emerging markets around the world, Eco Building Products’ Eco Red ShieldTM technology is quickly gaining recognition from builders and consumers alike for its unparalleled protection from mold, wood rot, termite damage and fire. At this year’s 2012 BMC Exposition in South Korea, Eco Building Products is showcasing a new line of Smart Components®, developed and licensed by Trussed, Inc., paired with Eco Red ShieldTM technology, providing seismic and high wind protection along with fire retardation protection. Since Korean building codes require fire retardant treated wood for all four-plus story wood-framed buildings, Eco Red ShieldTM’s recent QAI Listing for structural fire retardants means the unique lumber protection coating is the perfect solution for Korea’s growing construction market.

Recent seismic events in China and other world regions are a demonstration of Mother Nature’s power resulting in heightened consumer awareness, and reinforcing the need for the rapid

implementation of this new building technology. Seismic and high-wind engineered panels and frames protected with Eco Red ShieldTM are designed to meet lateral and vertical demand loads, custom manufactured in a quality-controlled environment to ensure an exact fit every time – resulting in more efficient installation, reduced labor costs and time savings. Smart Components® are manufactured using typical dimensional lumber, metal connector plates and patented concentric hold-down connectors serving as a key load-transfer mechanism for the building. Smart Components® are designed to meet critical load resistance needs providing a cost-effective alternative to other proprietary shear wall elements, eliminating the need for all structural sheathing. In essence, wooden structural framing components protected with Eco Red Shield, and engineered for seismic and high-wind activities, represent a cost-effective, eco-friendly, safe alternative in comparison to typical construction materials of steel, brick,

IRAN EARTHQUAKE REINFORCES NEED FOR SEISMIC-BEARING MATERIALSOn August 11th, two major earthquakes struck the Eastern Azerbaijan province in Iran, damaging more than 100 low-income villages throughout the region. In the aftermath of failed, poorly constructed buildings, more than 300 people lost their lives, with over 3,000 injured and many thousands more made homeless. The majority of villages saw rates of destruction as high as 90 percent. The combination of weak building materials and lack of seismically-sound design proved to be a deadly

Page 43: ECOB World News - October 2012

October 2012 www.ecob.net 42

combination, with many victims crushed by falling homes or trapped in debris.

Iran is no stranger to deadly earthquakes - a 2003 quake near the city of Bam left more than 25,000 dead, while another in 1990 killed more than 50,000. Iran is not alone in this level of destruction, either. The 2010 Haitian earthquake claimed nearly 32,000 lives, injured 300,000 more, and left over a million people homeless. In total, almost 300,000 residences and commercial buildings collapsed in the quake, and images of the vast expanses of concrete rubble in Port-au-Prince and other hard-hit areas will long linger in our collective consciousness.

Page 44: ECOB World News - October 2012

Page 45: ECOB World News - October 2012

These are just some examples of a growing crisis around the globe as urban centers become more developed, but building codes trail behind.

Traditional brick and mortar dwellings, like those found across the regions affected in Iran, are highly susceptible to seismic movement, and lack the ability to move laterally in a quake setting. Many of the buildings that failed in the Iran earthquakes were simple mud-brick homes, built by populations of people who simply don’t have access to affordable wood products that can withstand the elements and offer increased protection from ground movement.Another factor contributing to the problem is low-quality concrete. The problem with concrete construction in many parts of the world is the lack of Portland cement and sufficient silica-content in regional sands. In many of the world’s most impoverished or

Page 46: ECOB World News - October 2012

isolated areas, lower-quality cement substitutes are used along with white, finer sand sources that don’t contain enough granules to form a secure bond. This means much of the concrete used in places like Jamaica, Africa, and the Middle East is dangerously non-ductile – fragile enough to pose a significant risk of collapse in extremes of weather or ground instability.

As population centers in developing regions continue to explode, however, concrete or brick and mortar are still the building materials of choice because of their cheap availability and

45 October 2012

Features: Iran Earthquake

Page 47: ECOB World News - October 2012

October 2012 www.ecob.net 46

low risk for fire, termite damage, and mold – a growing problem understood all too well by President and CEO of Eco Building Products, Steve Conboy.

“The world is using concrete for infrastructure in emerging markets,” Conboy says, “meaning high-quality concrete is unavailable for home builders – so they end up making their own.” This lower-grade concrete, Conboy adds, is responsible for many of the building-failure related tragedies of the last few decades. “Even in the United States, it’s very difficult to achieve

Page 48: ECOB World News - October 2012

47 October 2012

the PSI certificates from the concrete mills needed to bring concrete structures up to code.”

In response to the growing crisis, Conboy formed a company to offer treated timber products he hopes will transform the building industry in these fast-developing areas. “Our seismic walls are made in quality-controlled settings, to relieve builders from depending on labor in the field to install the engineering value needed to make buildings safe,” says

Conboy. The company’s premiere treated wood line, Eco Red ShieldTM , offers

protection from moisture, termite damage, and fire. “We can build 50 Eco homes for every concrete

home – and because block is highly solar-vascular,

our products are far more energy efficient,” adds Conboy.

With Eco Building Products Seismic Wall components, the devastating effects of these kinds of natural disasters can be drastically lessened. With Eco Red ShieldTM protection coated wood products, Eco wants to provide people with safer housing, and change the way the world builds forever.

Page 50: ECOB World News - October 2012

ECO RED SHIELDTM HELPS PREVENT COSTLY

MOLD REMEDIATION Over 25 million Americans suffer from some type of allergic reaction to mold-related toxins, called mycotoxins, released into the air. Every year, an unknown number of these people will die from overexposure. In the United States alone, mold remediation - the removal of excess mold spores from homes and offices - is a $3 billion a year industry. Often times, mold remediation experts must treat the wood structure of the building, which are susceptible to mold infestation and wood rot, especially if exposed to termites or high humidity.

It’s impossible to remove all mold from any environment - mold is everywhere, and vital for the

49 October 2012

Features: Mold Remediation

Page 51: ECOB World News - October 2012

October 2012 www.ecob.net 50

breakdown of organic compounds. Spores can be found almost anywhere, but given the right circumstances, these spores will land and take root, creating new colonies. Most indoor mold spore counts are much higher than the outdoor environment, in that air circulation is poorer and the damp, dark environment inside walls, under carpets, or other areas are perfect conditions for spore growth.

Some molds are known to release toxins as means of self-defense - as with the notorious black mold, for example. In high enough concentrations, these toxins can dangerously affect neurochemistry in humans and lead to major health issues or even death.

As mold problems have gained presence in the media and legal circles, mold remediation claims have seen massive spikes in recent years. However, many mold-related damages are not covered under insurance claims, unless caused by other

Page 52: ECOB World News - October 2012

insured accidents like pipe bursts, etc. Since mold remediation cases can often spiral into the tens of thousands of dollars - far higher than the average home insurance claim - smart buyers and homeowners would be wise to take all the necessary precautions to prevent major outbreaks and damages from mold.

In addition to controlling humidity levels and temperature, one major way to safeguard against mold in a home’s structure is by turning to lumber protection, which prevents moisture from entering into wood fibers and creating suitable environments for mold colonies. Eco Red ShieldTM coating protects lumber against moisture, mold, and wood rot, extending the life of lumber products and providing a healthier, safer indoor environment.

Investing in protected lumber is a smart way to avoid the costly, mostly uninsured damages caused by mold. With Eco Red ShieldTM protection, home buyers can rest assured that behind the drywall the structure is dry and mold free. As more customers educate themselves on the risks of mold and the cost of remediation, the demand for adequate lumber protection is sure to explode in the years to come.

Each year, nearly half a million structures are lost to fire, resulting in substantial financial damages and tragic loss of human life. While fire retardation methods for lumber have been available for many years, few have seen wide acceptance as they are generally expensive, hard on the environment, and relatively unsafe for indoor air quality. With new fire retardant certification, eco-friendly composition, and achieving some of the industry’s highest indoor air quality standards, Eco Red ShieldTM is set to forever change the way the world builds with lumber.

Eco Red ShieldTM coatings recently achieved QAI Laboratories (QAI) listing B1053-1, providing evidence that Eco Red Shield’s fire protection qualities now meet building code requirements for Class “A” structural performance on all solid sawn lumber - making Eco Red Shield protected lumber equivalent to the traditionally accepted fire retardant treated wood (FRTW) for

interior use. Achieving the QAI listing for fire properties renders Eco Red ShieldTM protection the first ever topical wood treatment for interior Class “A” structural fire, termites, and wood-rot decay to meet building code requirements.

Established in 1994, QAI Laboratories (QAI) is a leader in third-party testing, inspection, and certification of building products for manufacturers and retailers, ensuring that Eco Red ShieldTM protection meets or exceeds current building code requirements for the intended application. QAI has qualified the Colton, California facility to produce Eco Red ShieldTM protected lumber to meet FRTW building code requirements, and is committed to ongoing factory auditing programs, and the follow-on qualification of Eco Building Products’ seven other production sites. Building officials, architects, contractors, designers and others utilize QAI listings and product labeling to

provide a basis for using or approving Eco Red ShieldTM coated lumber products in construction projects under the International Building Code.

QAI successfully tested Eco Red ShieldTM coatings to meet ASTM E84 Class “A” thirty minute extended testing typically achieved using pressure treatment methodology. Eco Red Shield topical treatment meets the same performance requirements, allowing the end user an alternative that does not require a reduction in structural strength, exposure to potentially toxic or harmful chemicals, twisting or warped lumber and potential corrosive properties. Additionally, Eco Red ShieldTM protection is the world’s first code compliant fire retardant

treated wood product to meet GREENGUARD Children & Schools CertificationSM - which has some of the most stringent requirements in the industry.

“In a league of its own, Eco Red ShieldTM protection is superior to anything currently on the market, and with a cost structure everyone can afford,” says Mark Vuozzo, Chief Technical Officer of Eco Building Products. “Highlighting our test results, the smoke production index is extremely low, proving the wood is not burning. Fire destroys structures, but smoke is what typically is harmful to humans”, added Vuozzo.

Eco Building Products President and CEO Steve Conboy is thrilled about the recent certification. “Working in the construction framing business for over 35 years, my vision was to bring cost effective lumber protection to residential home builders that could never afford to use FRTW in a single family home,” says Conboy. “Against all odds, Eco Building Products has proven to the world that we can change the wood preservation/pressure treatment business.”

Page 65: ECOB World News - October 2012

In the southwestern United States alone, termites are responsible for more than $1.5 billion per year in structural damages to homes and other buildings. Repairing or replacing damaged lumber represents not only a substantial financial cost to owners, but also a significant source of waste for an industry struggling to become sustainable. This increased burden on our forests to replace compromised wood components can be mitigated, however, with the protection offered by Eco Red ShieldTM coating.

Termite damage not only weakens lumber integrity, but also opens up entry points for moisture, mold, and wood rot. As termites often go unnoticed for months after the initial infestation, in many cases the damage is already severe once the colony is discovered.

With Eco Red ShieldTM protection, lumber is shielded against termite damage and the subsequent moisture problems. This greatly extends the life of wood products used in home construction, and helps offset the demand on our forests for new lumber. As the construction industry looks for ways to lessen its carbon footprint and protect dwindling forest reserves, combating termite damage with Eco Red ShieldTM coating is one way the building sector can achieve genuine sustainability.

Features: Pallets

PALLETS - TIME TO GO RED?

The ubiquitous pallet is an almost invisible but integral part of the global supply chain - there are an estimated 2 billion circulating in the United States alone, carrying 80 percent of domestic commerce. In fact, pallets are numerous enough to account for nearly half of all U.S. hardwood lumber production. With the advent of the shipping container, pallets became widely popular as a means to efficiently load and unload deliveries. From supermarkets to wholesalers to the occasional beach bonfire, pallets are responsible for moving the economy and efficiently shipping goods and services.

Because of their many uses and often harsh environments, however, pallets have an infamously short lifecycle. The

Page 67: ECOB World News - October 2012

Page 68: ECOB World News - October 2012

67 October 2012

U.S. Forest Service estimates that pallets make up more than 2 percent of all municipal waste and over 20 percent of all wood waste, filling up landfills every year with rotted, moldy, or broken lumber. While there is a $3.5 billion pallet recycling industry, one way to help bring down pallet waste and minimize their impact of deforestation is to extend their window of use, despite many pallets being exposed to moisture, termites, rain and other elements.

Creating a longer-lasting, reusable pallet is one vision Eco Building Products has for its Eco Red ShieldTM coating process. This unique protection system prevents mold, wood rot, and termite damage, with the added benefit of fire inhibition, and could greatly

Features: Pallets

Page 69: ECOB World News - October 2012

October 2012 www.ecob.net 68

extend the lives of pallets typically compromised by rotting due to excess moisture, exposure to the elements, or damage by insects, while also lessening the risk of fire associated with wooden pallets.

To be allowed to ship goods across international borders, pallets must prove to be free from insect infestation,

requiring either extreme heating or chemical fumigation. Eco Red

ShieldTM protection, on the other hand, keeps wood safe from

infestation while providing other protection, as well. This

would also enable used pallets, many of which have been fumigated

with toxic chemicals, to be more widely used

in recycling, or to be repurposed for crafts, lawn

furniture, etc. Fumigation also

Page 70: ECOB World News - October 2012

has the highest carbon footprint of all available preservation processes.

By maintaining wood integrity and preventing insect infestation or moisture damage, Eco Red ShieldTM coating could significantly extend the lifecycle of wooden pallets, and have a substantial impact on waste and resource management by impacting this often overlooked but important industry. With its recent

69 October 2012

Page 71: ECOB World News - October 2012

GREENGUARD certification, Eco Red ShieldTM would also bring down the VOC (Volatile Organic Compound) counts of raw wood and painted pallets significantly, making them safer for workers to handle and making indoor environments healthier. With all these benefits in mind, maybe it’s time the supply chain industry got a little greener by making their pallets a little redder.

(TDDs), invented a breakthrough technology which harvests and distributes daylight in homes and commercial buildings, opening up an entirely new category in the lighting industry. Solatube Daylighting Systems are now being installed in areas of buildings never before thought possible, resulting in energy-saving and sustainability in residential and commercial spaces around the world.

Using patented technology, Solatube Daylighting Systems harvest daylight at the rooftop and transfer it down through a highly reflective tube (which bends up to 90 degrees and can be up to 70 feet or more long) and distribute it evenly into a room through a diffuser or decorative fixture at the ceiling.

Solatube International recently instituted the international Solatube ICE Awards for inspired and creative excellence in daylighting with its products. Some of the 2011 winners included:

GLOBAL ENCASEMENT, INC. The building industry has amassed some costly mistakes

in both materials and construction techniques over the years, resulting in major financial damages, massive burdens on the environment, and many adverse effects on human health. Remediations and litigations are crippling already struggling contractors and building firms fighting to stay afloat in the slow recovery following the crash of 2008. Asbestos, lead, and mold, along with tighter regulations for roofing and site cleanup, represent major obstacles for the industry in years to come.

These challenges are what prompted Global Encasement, Inc. founder George C. Keefe to perfect an innovative line of proprietary coatings to tackle some of the most difficult encapsulation jobs within the building sector. Water-based and environmentally-friendly, these acrylic coatings lock in contaminants and surfaces with a breathable membrane that offers protection from fire, chemicals, moisture, volatile organic compounds, mold, and more.

Because of their non-toxicity and simple application, these protective coatings can be applied by hand without the need for

expensive or complicated equipment, and can provide low-cost, long-lasting solutions to some of the most expensive building issues in the industry. Global Encasement, Inc. has been chosen by the GSA, the Department of Defense, and thousands of private clients for everything from waste removal to weatherproofing.

As standards for energy-efficient roofing rise in places like California and elsewhere, Global Encasement’s products offer a low-cost solution to creating a green, energy efficient roof with minimal time, money, and effort. An application of one of Global Encasement’s coating solution pays for itself in as little as two years through energy savings, as solar-reflective white roofing decreases thermal energy absorption by upwards of 80 percent.

With a diverse set of industry applications and a perfected formula that combines ecosensitivity, ease-of-use, and affordability, Global Encasement, Inc. is changing the way the construction industry builds, one coat at a time.

When Jae and Debra Evans moved to South Africa in 2005, they felt compelled to help educate and nurture the children of Xhosa tribal community, which had little resources. They could not have predicted, though, the scope of the need - many of the children in their classrooms were malnourished, some having gone days without a meal. Jae and Debra began serving lunch in their classes, and within a few weeks the number of children attending swelled from 60 to more than 300. It was then that the couple realized that providing meals needed to become a full-time operation. Looking past their limited pots and pans, Jae and Debra looked to build a food manufacturing facility dubbed a ‘Super Kitchen.’

The first Super Kitchen was completed in 2008, supported by over 21 local organizations. The facility

served over 4,000 meals per day, and continued to grow, leading Jae and Debra to the conclusion that these successful Super Kitchens needed to expand into other parts of the world. Together, they formed Outside the Bowl and began looking for other communities in need.

The devastating earthquakes in Haiti followed not too long after, providing an unprecedented opportunity for outreach. Outside the Bowl soon ran

into logistical challenges, however - how were they going to ship the equipment into the

101 October 2012

Outreach: Outside The Bowl

Page 103: ECOB World News - October 2012

country and build the kitchens, given the tough regulations on imports? That’s when Jae had a breakthrough - the shipping containers used to transport the equipment could be part of the structure, themselves.

By using shipping containers as key components of the Super Kitchens, Outside the Bowl had created a model for efficient, lightning-fast food resources that could be deployed almost anywhere in the world. The organization recently unveiled a new kitchen in Tijuana, Mexico, which will feed more than 8,000 children per day, and has plans to build up to six more throughout Mexico, with more proposals waiting for South Africa and Haiti.

The only thing holding back the expansion of these Super Kitchens is

October 2012 www.ecob.net 102

Page 104: ECOB World News - October 2012

Outreach: Outside The Bowl

Page 105: ECOB World News - October 2012

the cost - each fully-functional unit costs about $150,000 to deploy and operate, and currently Outside the Bowl can only fund about five projects per year. The problem with simply providing donated meals or other packaged resources is that often the aid fails to end up in the right hands - sometimes it is confiscated by corrupt officials or local gangs, or sold for a profit instead of feeding the hungry. By directly controlling the distribution of food, Super Kitchens allow Outside the Bowl to reach those most in need.

The giant 700-pound electric kettles in a Super Kitchen can each cook more than 1,000 meals per day, and the organization employs local adults to run the operation and distribute meals. This emphasis on self-sufficiency allows Outside the Bowl to achieve maximum impact, with minimum resources.

With innovative design and sustainability in mind, Outside the Bowl is a model for mobile outreach, and will hopefully inspire more community-minded projects to help provide a base for the world’s impoverished children to eat, learn, and grow together.

The River’s Edge Ranch provides ample opportunities to stay busy. As a working ranch, the grounds house livestock like horses, pigs, chickens, llamas, donkeys, and peacocks, and residents will soon be selling corn-fed cattle to help support the Ranch’s activities and the men who call it home. “We have 38 varieties of fruits, and more than 30 pistachio trees for harvesting,” adds Hornsby. “In the future, we have plans for several greenhouses to grow shrubs and vegetables for resale in local nurseries.

The Ranch has permits for 2 wind turbines to capture the power of the fast-moving high desert air, and Hornsby has plans to make the entire property powered by sustainable sources within the next few years. Recently, a 4,800 square foot multi-function building was raised on the property, and
