IntroductionAs the moon circles the Earth, the shape of the moon

appears to change. This is because different amounts of the illuminated part of the moon is facing us. The shape varies from a full moon, when the Earth is between the sun and

the moon, to a new moon, when the moon is between the sun and the Earth. The complete cycle of the moon

repeats every 29.5 days. The time in days counted from the new moon is the moon’s “age”. Each complete cycle of

phases is called a lunation or lunar month.

New MoonIn the astronomical world the phrase New Moon is the lunar phase that occurs when the Moon is in between the Earth and the Sun. This makes the Moon’s illuminated side facing

the Sun, and therefore the dark, or unilluminated side of the Moon faces almost directly toward Earth, making the

Moon almost invisible to the naked eye.

Waxing CrescentThe Waxing Crescent Moon is the second lunar phase showing a thin sliver of the Moon which is seen to set soon after sunset. As this phase goes on the illuminated part is increasing. You will not see the Moon in this phase after midnight. In this phase, the Moon follows the Sun across the sky by a little bit all through the day.

First QuarterThe First Quarter Moon is the phase of the Moon which is

most easily spotted by the casual observer, and the illuminated part is still increasing. If the sky is clear at sunset, you can’t miss the first quarter Moon. In this phase, the Moon sets at midnight. In a crystal clear sky, you can even see the first quarter Moon a few hours before sunset in the southeast.

Waxing GibbousThe Waxing Gibbous Moon is very nearly full and illuminated generally from the right, and still increasing. This phase of the Moon rises in the afternoon, which is why it usually goes unnoticed until it gets dark at sunset. The Moon is in this phase for nearly a week between first quarter and full. The Moon in this phase sets just shortly before sunrise.

Full MoonThe Full Moon is a lunar phase that occurs when the Moon is on the opposite side of the Earth from the Sun. At this time the part of the Moon that is facing the earth is almost fully

illuminated by the Sun and appears round. The Full Moon has different names depending on when it appears. For instance

the second Full Moon in a month is known as a Blue Moon.

Waning GibbousThe Waning Gibbous Moon is just past the Full Moon and illuminated generally from the left, and is starting to decrease. This phase of the Moon is seen to rise a little while after sunset. The Moon is in this phase for nearly a week between full and third quarter. The Moon in this phase sets just shortly after sunrise.

Last QuarterThe Last Quarter Moon is about half illuminated, and still decreasing. This phase is also known as the Third Quarter Moon, rising near midnight and setting around noon. Once

the Sun rises, the half illuminated Moon should be rather easy to spot in the southern part of the sky. Unfortunately, most

people do not think to look for the Moon in the morning.

Waning CrescentThe Waning Crescent Moon is the last lunar phase before the lunar cycle starts over. As this phase goes on the illuminated part is still decreasing. This phase shows a thin sliver of the Moon which rises just a few hours before sunrise. Once the Sun rises it is very difficult to see the faint crescent in the sky.
