Threatened with the presentation of a blank space as a representation of mycontribution to things of late, and with nought of interest to offer you from acouncil still in summer recess, I looked to the things around me to help fill thevoid.

I expend some little effort during the week endeavouring to protect and restorehabitats for breeding birds and it has been satisfying over recent days to begreeted with a flock of 30 or so lapwing as I take the cows ont’ moor int’morning. Does this mean there are now more of them about? Or have the fewjust decided to have a late summer break in a beautiful part of the country?Suppose only time, and thorough survey, will tell.

I do know there used to be loads more about when I called them pewits (as inthe church seat, not what little boys do when they’ve had lots to drink). In factI reckon I saw them much more often then, than I ever saw one of those furrystripy faced things (and I don’t mean the elephant in the room, hmm, or do I?).Those were perhaps rightly protected from persecution in the first place, butsurely they shouldn’t now be protected to persecute.

There could be potential for political parallels here but perhaps a little toocontroversial for this space.

From the Chair ......

3 Village News and ViewsFrom the Revd Andrew Taylor-Cook

As I was sitting at my computer wondering as to what towrite for this letter, I was listening to a song by theLighthouse Family called ‘Wish’. The opening lyrics golike this, “I thought, I got, the A to Z, but now I’m lostand I don’t where I am going, I don’t know what I amlooking for.” Whilst I sat listening to the song, I startedto ponder on those opening words, in particular, “Ithought, I got, the A to Z, but now I’m lost. In otherwords, just when we think we’ve got everything sortedand life is good – suddenly, out of the blue, we findourselves in the midst of chaos and end up feeling lostand confused. A few weeks ago this happened to me.The Hard Drive on my computer broke and after it hadspent three days in the workshop, I was informed that it

had to be replaced. This was only the start of what became three week’s worth of unbearablefrustration and chaos. In fact, it turned out to be a scary awakening for me, because it made merealize just how much I not only ‘use’ but also as to how much I ‘rely’ on my computer to help medo my job nowadays.

You don’t need to know about computers and the problems they can cause to know what it is likewhen something major and unexpected happens in your life, which invariably turns your worldupside down. For example, the loss of a job, the breakdown of a relationship, a bad crop of wheator cattle infections. An injury or serious illness; the death of a loved one, not getting the examresults or the promotion that you were hoping for……..the list is almost endless. So when you’re inthe midst of chaos and uncertainty, who is it that you can turn to? A loved one, a close friend ormay be a good neighbour? Well, these are usually all good places to start, for it’s a loved one, aclose friend and occasionally, a good neighbour that I turn to as well. But for me there is someoneeven greater and even more dependable and that someone is – God! When I am in the midst ofchaos and uncertainty I can always rely on God’s presence to help keep me calm, and to help bringa sense of order and proportion to the situation I find myself in. When chaos and uncertainty seemsto take over, albeit briefly, we can be assured that God neither leaves us nor forsakes us. We’veonly got to read the Book of Exodus in the Old Testament to discover God’s loyalty to his people - aloyalty he is still willing to share with his people – even today! And I for one say, “Thanks be toGod!” Andrew

District Councillor's Corner

Changes to Waste Management

As most of you will now be aware, the District Council is making significant changes toits waste management and recycling services. You should have now received a leafletthrough your letterbox explaining how the changes affect you. But just in case youhave not, here are the main points you need to be aware of.

Cardboard will no longer be collected from your green bin, but must now be storedin your blue bag along with paper and cans. An additional blue bag is available onrequest – please contact the District Council or myself. The new Harrison Way Recycling Centre at Darley Dale is now open for collectionof household waste, including white goods, electrical appliances, cardboard, gardenwaste, wood and much more. Small trailer loads will be accepted, but nocommercial or builders waste is allowed. With the opening of the new amenity site, the Saturday Morning Waste CollectionService will be withdrawn from 1st September 2011 across the Derbyshire Dales. This is being removed due to a reduction in use of the service, the high cost ofrunning the skip and due to all items collected going straight to landfill.Bring banks (recycling points) will be withdrawn from areas near to the HarrisonWay site; 3 in Darley Dale, 1 in Rowsley and 2 at Darley Bridge. Others near to thenew amenity site, such as those at Elton and Winster, will be under review over thenext year.

Some of these changes will bring benefits to local residents. Households unable tohave a green bin will now have the opportunity to recycle cardboard and the openingof the new amenity site will provide additional recycling opportunities in the Dalescentral area.

I did, however, strongly object to the withdrawal of the Saturday Morning WasteCollection. I accept that (regrettably) all items collected go straight to landfill, but inremote rural villages such as Elton, this will leave the elderly, disabled and those whocannot afford a car excluded from the removal of bulky waste. Furthermore, theremoval of bring banks will leave such residents excluded from recycling.

Unfortunately, despite my protest, the withdrawal of these service will go-ahead. Ifyou have any questions relating to these changes, please do not hesitate to contactme. In Brief

The new Arc Leisure, Matlock sports and leisure centre will open its doors on 24th

August 2011. Despite some of the controversies that have surrounded the openingof the centre, I have can say that following a site visit in early August it will be afirst-class centre facility which will serve Dales residents well.

Elton W.I.

Elton WI members have beengetting out and about thisSummer. Back in May, singersLorena, Anne and Stellaimpressed other WIs at a MayMadness event held in Glossop.

In early June a coachloadtravelled to Whaley Bridgewhere the narrow boat ‘JudithMay’ awaited to take memberson a memorable outing alongthe picturesque Peak Forestcanal calling at Bugsworth Basinand including a delicious mealserved on board. BugsworthBasin, where limestone fromDove Holes was transferred onto canal boats, was mentionedin the June issue of the Echoand has been very well restored.

The following month we wereguests of Rowsley WI where, bycoincidence, the subject of theillustrated talk was the Historyof Canals. Suzie Litton-Woodwas a fascinating speaker whohad given up a well-paid job tolive and work on a canal boatand she gave a very lively andinformative talk.

There have been two meetingsof the Cavendish Group.Whatstandwell organised a talkabout Sir Richard Arkwright andthe Derwent Valley WorldHeritage Site, while Starholmesarranged a walk in theLumsdale valley followed by adelicious supper. Lumsdale is avery important industrialarcheological site with theremains of several mills oncepowered by the fast flowingBentley Brook and is well wortha visit.

Eggington WI invited us to aCraft Evening. It was a lovelynight out with a chance to tryseveral crafts including cookingwith filo pastry, crochet, makinggift boxes and finishing with anexcellent supper.

And we still have our ownevening walk in August and the1940s Event in September!

I am sometimes surprised by the variety of things that can capture my interest and thecurrent theme is to see some of the fascinating remains of the Industrial Revolution. Thiscould be such a large pursuit as to become a [sad!] passion in itself, were it not for the factthat there is an infinite number of other passions to choose from in the world. Unfortunatelythe patient has little desire to be cured when there is so much to discover, so recently, I wasable to fulfil a long held wish to see the flight of 16 locks and the canal aqueduct at Marple. What do you mean you’ve never heard of them? There were over 4000 miles of Canals atthe height of their era and the High Peak Canal was a mere 15 miles stretching betweenWhaley Bridge through Marple to Manchester. Consequently, we set off one mid- morningin a spell of drizzle, rain and wind that was forecast to clear up quite soon. We were a bitsceptical about this as we drove over towards Whaley Bridge and the atmospherics left usin little doubt that this was the Pennines, but as we approached the town of Marple theweather brightened and by the time we were in the Etherow Valley Visitor Centre car parkfor lunch, the sun was breaking out - it felt hot now.

I find Country Parks extremely boring and unsatisfactory personally, with the ducks, cafeterias and tarmac that is meant to be [a half mile walk into] countryside, but this was ahandy place to leave the car today, in the Pay and Display [another niggle]. We devized aroute that first visited the Marple Aqueduct, which as it sails across the river Etherow, carriesthe canal high overhead. There is a taller railway viaduct running close by and parallel to itthat doesn't detract from the magnificent construction that we passed beneath through itsarches. The beautiful stonework and sheer solid presence of this fine workmanship complet-ed in 1802, somehow proclaims the confidence and optimism of the era that was the CanalAge.

We wound round the steep valley side just above the river to climb up and reach the canallevel at one end of the aqueduct and crossing by means of its towpath with a sturdy retainingwall on one side only, admired the fine, solid craftsmanship in stone, scarcely daring to lookover the parapet at the river 100 feet below. This nervousness was enhanced by the absenceof any barrier on the opposite side of the canal, a mere few feet away, so it felt as if youwere just sailing into space , looking across to the twin rail viaduct quite close by. So aninteresting and impressive experience, but I won't be taking up tightrope walking.

I thought we would have to walk along the canal for some way before reaching the flight of16 locks, but was pleasantly surprised to reach them in a couple of hundred yards before Ihad even got into my stride. The sun was shining brightly as we rose alongside the series ofsimilar constructions that in their time must have been the equivalent of the Motorways oftoday. Quite charming now that they repose peacefully as a leisure facility, but in their

heyday, tremendous quantities of goods [stone, lime, coal] passed through this marathonof work 24 hours a day. There was a really strong wind wrenching the trees about, but inthe brilliant sunlight, I plied the camera as we went, this being the constant companion onmy rambles, that has created quite an extensive photo diary over time, though I scarcelyever have time to look at it subsequently.

At first it did seem as if it was going to be quite a way to cover the whole flight of locks thatraises the canal by some 200 feet from bottom to top, judging by the spacings at this lowerend of the series. However, as we progressed, the spacings became closer together, whichwas just what was needed to maintain interest and we reached Top Lock quite readily aftera mile and a half, at the point where the Macclesfield Canal sets off from the area that wasoriginally the Limeworks of one Samuel Oldknow. I only discovered all this later when I wasresearching and reading up on the internet to consolidate my experiences, and missedviewing the Limekilns themselves that sourced their limestone by means of the canal fromthe vast quarries deep in the hills around Doveholes. They were so close by, but hiddendown a bank below the canal and I was so busy being amused by the desperate manoeuvresof sophisticated Captains on their holidaying canal boats that I never saw them. Never mind!

Normally, I can plan a circular walk, but a canal is obviously linear so today that wasn’t toopractical. The return journey was in any case a completely different perspective which gaveplenty of time to enjoy some fine canal-side architecture in the shape of former warehouses, delightful little bridges and charming paved wharves. All very soothing to an overactiveimagination. Perhaps I should practice more outings in a similar vein? Quite exciting, I think!

Oh and by the way, when we left the canal towpath to vary the return on a footpath I hadseen, ......... we got lost!

New Village Guide, Family Trail and Interpretation Boards

About eight years ago Elton Local History Group produced a visitors’ guide to the older part ofthe village with funding from the Peak District National Park Authority’s Sustainable DevelopmentFund. Two thousand leaflets were printed and these have now nearly all gone. Encouraged bythe Parish Council to produce a new guide, the History Group recently applied to the same sourcefor a grant and I am very pleased to say that our application was successful. The fact that wewere able to show backing by the community through fund raising events and letters of supportwas a big help, so thank you to everyone involved.

Not only does the grant cover the cost of a Village Guide but also of a booklet of information andactivities for children and their families, along the lines of a treasure trail around Elton.

We are also going to produce two interpretation boards, one near the seat at the viewpoint onMoor Lane and the other near the seat at Burycliff troughs. The first one will have a drawing ofthe view with labels showing the landmarks and the second one will have some history of thequarry and troughs.

Both the Village Guide and Family Trail won’t be just about the history of the village and parishbut will also include aspects of geology, landscape, archaeology, architecture, wildlife, ecologyand modern life. The Guide will be an A2 size leaflet and will cover Elton, Gratton and Harthillmoor.

The group made a start on the projects in July and we hope to have everything complete bysummer 2012. If you would like to get involved, please come along to the village hall on the thirdTuesday of each month (except December) at 7.30 pm.

From Mark and Jan Valance

We have moved from Elton to the Sheffield suburb of Dore, which is on the very edge of thecity, close to the moors of the Peak District. The main reason for moving was to be be nearerour daughter, Jody, and at the same time remain in easy reach of the Bakewell area wheremany of our friends are.

It wasn’t an easy decision and there are many ways in which we will miss Elton. We enjoyedbeing part of such a friendly and sociable village, and we are grateful to many people for theirfriendliness and hospitality.

We would also like to thank the many helpers and contributors at the Jumble Sale, which, withextra donations on the day, made the fantastic sum of £450 for Mark’s charity, Pedal forParkinson’s. The proceeds, currently standing at over £20,000, will go to fund research intoParkinson’s at Sheffield University.

We can’t stay away from Elton, so we expect to be at as many village quizzes as we can!

Our very best wishes, Jan & Mark

Elton Jubilee Field Update – Autumn 2011

The trustees felt that the village is in need of a little update, so here we go . . . .

What a brilliant Beer Festival we had at the end of July!

For once the weather was kind to us (was that anything to do with the Rev. Andrewattending?) and the ale kept flowing. Delicious food and excellent entertainment was alsoavailable all day. Many thanks to Rockin’ Johnny Spreadbourough who first took to the stage, followed by The Garden Cats, The Void, Take The Seven and The Likely Ones; music for allages performed by artists of all ages. Brilliant!

If you couldn’t make it to the festival please pencil in the last Saturday in July for next year’sevent. For £5 entry you will kick yourself if you miss it!

In September of this year we are hosting a joint venture with the fair ladies of Elton WI. Thiswill be a 1940’s themed day with stalls, refreshments and various entertainers including Punch& Judy and a George Formby tribute act. Will he clean my windows?

We would love to see you all on September 10th so dust off your flying jacket and try to popby chaps.

Even though we keep ourselves busy with fundraising, such as quizzes and events, we stillhave to take responsibility for the general running of the field. Unfortunately one of thesetasks was to contact the police after a spate of mindless vandalism. If you witness any crimebeing committed on the Jubilee Field please contact the police first and then inform a trustee. The police are unable to take action on information from third parties.

Finally will all user groups or individuals who wish to hold an organised event on the field orusage of the pavilion please book with Colin Swindell and make prompt payment to thetreasurer. It would certainly save any red faces if there were to be maintenance or groundswork being carried out and your event had to be postponed.

The Summer Holiday

Like most people I really like the summer, the main reason for this is, of course, no school. But

another reason is, I love just going out on bikes all day with friends and going out for ages and ages.

One other thing about this time of year is the supposedly nice weather which is fantastic for

camping. We have been a few times this holiday… one particular time it didn’t go well (did it Katie).

These are my main reasons for loving the summer holidays, what are yours?

Elton will be a town. Hikers will have power packs in their boots. The youth hostel willbe bigger.

Cows will milk themselves and farmers will have super sonic tractors.

My home will expand and shrink.

I will have a pocket laser and a real pocket army.Written by Huw Thomas Aged 9/10

A peaceful Sunday afternoonWhen summer nights are lightChurch bells ring for evensong

The cricket team in white

The people clap the batsman inThe bowling changes round

Fielders stand in scorching sunOn this tranquil cricket ground

At 5 o’clock they’re in for teaThe opposition winning

They change the bat for the second halfBut the locals lose their innings

The cricket players from days gone bySit smoking their pipes on the boundary

Many thanks to all the people of Eltonwho so generously sponsored ourgrandson Nathan and his two friendsas they walked 192 miles (302 km) for‘Hope for Justice’, a charity aimed atending human trafficking, includingchildren and to prosecute those whoare running it.

They walked from St Bees, Cumbria toRobin Hoods Bay, coast to coasttaking 12 days.

The total amount raised from Eltonwas £300, with a total of £1300 for a veryworthy cause. Thank you again.

Elton Youth Club

The End of the Road... For Now! L

It is with much regret that Colin and Lynn have decided to call time on Elton’s Youth Club.

This was a decision which wasn’t taken lightly or easily, but as time has gone by a numberof factors and changes have left us with no choice, but to call it a day:

1. Numbers attending the club have significantly reduced with some sessions attracting only3 or 4 members.

2. Next year will see many members leave the club as they go over the age threshold andthere will be even fewer new members coming in.

3. The cost of running the club has continuously outweighed any income. Grants andsubsidies have slowly dried-up over the year and the cost of insurance has dramaticallyincreased. Furthermore, with so few members attending, the cost of hiring the VillageHall is not always covered by membership fees.

4. Changes in personal circumstances have left both Lynn and Colin with little time toorganise club sessions and struggling to fit sessions in around work and othercommitments. Other week nights have been explored, but none suit Colin or Lynn’s workschedules.

We know some members and potential new members will be disappointed, but we sincerelyapologise and hope you can appreciate our decision based on the reasons laid out above.

It has been an absolute pleasure to run the club over the past 4 or 5 years. We havethoroughly enjoyed it and we will hold many fond memories for years to come. Someparticular memories which will always stand out for us will be the Halloween and Christmasparties and the outings to Megazone.

However, with some money left in the coffers we have decided to hold one last HalloweenParty for all members of the club and other kids in the village as our way of saying thank you.We will notify everybody nearer to the time.

We wish to take this opportunity to thank everybody who has attended the club, donatedfunds, joined in at our fundraisers and, of course, a special thank you to Julie Haslam andothers for setting-up the club some years ago.

Although we are saying goodbye to Elton Youth Club ‘for now’, we will always keep an openmind about starting-up again in the coming years should the demand arise once again.

Thanks

Colin Swindell & Lynn Carson
