>>BHEKISISA MNCUBE writes the political survival of Agang SA and the Economic Freedom Fightersis perilous as both outfits are built around charismatic leadership.

ONE of three grounds for legitimaterule, according to theGermanecono-mist and sociologist Max Weber isgrace and charisma.

Weber defined charismatic au-thority as “resting on devotion to theexceptional sanctity, heroism or ex-emplary character of an individualperson, andofthenormativepatternsor order revealed or ordained byhim.”

Recently two political partieshave entered the political landscapeof South Africa.

These are Agang SA led by aca-demic, Dr Mamphela Aletta Ramph-ele, and the Economic FreedomFighters (EFF) led by the high schoolgraduate, Julius Sello Malema.

Both parties exhibit a semblanceof charismatic leadership.

Both leaders are self-appointedcrusaders, who, we are made to be-lieve, will ignite innovation if not arevolution in the political landscapeof our country. Both of their shortstintsat thehelmof theirpoliticalout-fits is not based on popular vote butsome ‘revelation or heroism’ thatdrives them to stand up and lead.

An analysis of Dr Ramphele and

Malema’s speeches in the last 30days shows that Ramphele unwit-tingly considers leadership as ‘a giftof grace’.

She seems to believe that she hasexemplary leadership qualities thatcan save South Africa from its “im-mediate demise”. She thinks herselfa prophet ordained by political godsto perform a special duty.

On the other hand Malema wit-tingly emphasises charisma whileoverwhelmingly leaning towards po-litical demagogue.

Both leaders frequently appeal totraditional moral values and to ideasofnational grandeur.Theybothpaintasimpleblackpictureof theiropposi-tion,namelytheruling ANC.TheANCisviewedasabeast infestedwithcor-rupt leaders presiding over an ineptadministration.

Themain distinction is thatMale-ma emphasises ideas of persecutionand theneed for revenge.Theuniqueselling proposition of his politicaloutfit is the nationalisation of themines and bankswithout compensa-tion and the expropriation of land, again without compensation.

Under Malema’s tutelage the

whitepopulationwouldhave to showremorse for its apartheid sins and letgo of all “ill-gotten gains”. The blackpopulation “will not want,” becauseMalema’s government will “shep-herd” them and provide all luxuriesenjoyed currently by a whiteminori-ty.

Malema has also apologised toSouthAfricans for bequeathing thema “rudderless” leader like PresidentJacob Zuma.

By painting a paranoid picture ofthe rulingparty,Malemastrengthenshostilities between his infant EFFand the political giant the ANC.

Presenting the distorted interpre-tation of the country’s state of affairsunder Zuma makes it easier for EFFwhile it is clamouring for politicalspace.

Dr Ramphele stresses economicvalues and concern for the welfareof others. She abhors corruption, thelethargy of the public service and po-litical thuggery.

Under her tutelage South Africawill be free of corruption, economicgrowthwillskyrocket, political actorswill be upstanding citizens, and wewill all live happily ever after.

Ifsheiscorrect,thenCosatugener-al secretary ZwelinzimaVavi’swarn-ing thatSouthAfricawas“headed fora predators state where powerful, corrupt and demagogic elite of politi-cal hyenas are increasingly using thestate to get rich” won’t materialise.

This analysis shows the EFF andAgang SA propaganda machinerypaint a completely black picture ofthe ruling party and interprets everyaction in terms of a paranoid fear ofSouth Africa becoming a wastelandor at worst a pariah state over-whelmed by corruption and othersocial ills.

There are three common traits ofparties founded on charismatic lead-ership. The most obvious is politicaladventurism of their leaders.

Political adventurism in realpoli-tik means entering a political spacewith delusion of grandeur withouthavingpaidattention to the realityonthe ground.

Secondly, theseparties arealwaysshort on concrete policies. Thirdly, the founding leaders remain at thehelm long after inaugural conferenc-es and the success or failure of theparty is always predicatedonthepo-

litical fortunes of the founding lead-ers.

Ramphele may honestly want tocleanse our political landscape ofcorruption and political thuggery, but politically speaking, she is naiveto think with a few learned friendsliving in Midrand /Sandton, she canmastermind an overhaul of SA poli-tics.Shewillsoonlearnthatthepoliti-cal realm is no realm for saints.

Malemaontheotherhandisaper-petual political demagogue who willdo anything to cling to power forpersonal gain.

Inconclusion, sociologistssuggestthat charismatic parties are anathe-ma to democracy and usually lackideology basesastheyare“restingondevotion to the exceptional sanctity, heroismorexemplarycharacterofanindividual person”.

Both parties do stand a chance tohold at least a seat in theNationalAs-sembly come election 2014, but tocauseadenttotheANC’massiveelec-toral support is improbable.

‘Rape whistles’ given toelderly women

NOKULUNGA NGOBESE>>[email protected]

A GROUP of city poets on Wom-en’s Day hosted a campaign attheThuthukahall inEdendale, todiscourage rape of the elderly.

The campaign was done inpartnershipwiththeDepartmentof Social Development. Elderlywomen from different areas un-der Greater Edendale weretaught howtoprotect themselvesfrom potential rapists.

Local poet, Nangu ‘Golide’Makha, said that they had tocome dressed as elderly womenin order to show their support. He said: “We discovered that our

grandmothers are faced with alot of problems, as some are leftto take care of their orphanedgrandchildren with only the oldage support grant.

“Some of them do not evenknowhowtoapply for foster caregrants for their grandchildren.”

He said after seeingmedia re-ports on the rapeof elderlywom-en,local poets decided topresentthem with whistles on Women’sDay, so that theycouldblowthemin case of danger.

“Weareagainsttherapeofourgrandmothers. Whenever theyfeel that there is danger, theyshould blow the whistles to alertcommunity members”, he said.

PUPILSPUPILS>> Students say they are not registered towrite final exams at the end of the year.

NOMPENDULO NGUBANE>>nompendulo.ngubane@myecho.co.za

ABOUT 300 matric pupilsenrolled at Intuition Col-lege in the city have aban-

doned classes after discoveringthattheyarenotregisteredforendof year exams.

Striking pupils have accusedtheinstitutionof failing to registerthemwiththeDepartmentofEdu-cation so they will be ready to sitfor the examinations.

Speaking toEcho, somepupilssaid the matter came to their at-tention when they went to checkif they were registered by the de-partment.

According to a pupil, who re-fused to be named, only 27 pupilshave been registered out of morethan 300 that are enrolled at theinstitution.

She said affected pupils arethose that are upgrading theirmatric subjects and those thatare doing the whole Grade 12.

The pupils say it has been twoweeks sincetheyhaveabandonedclasses.

“We were told by the depart-ment that it was too late to evenregister.Theclosingdateforregis-tering with the department wason March 15.

“The information that we gotfrom the department is that it’salready too late to register. Wehavetriedto get answersfrom theprincipal but hehas failed to help.

“Coming to college is like awaste of time because we won’tget our results.

“This has resulted in a strikeandit’saffectingussince therearenoclasses.Otherpupilsareasking

for refunds; it’s been a wastedyear.

“There is no use writing theexams if we won’t get our resultsat the end of the year,” she said.

Another pupil said he encoun-tered the same predicament in2011. He said he did not receiveresults for some of his subjects.

“Theschoolhasbeengivingusproblems each and every year. The principal is forever withoutanswers about the situation. I’mconfused how such a thing couldbe happening at the institution,”he said.

Intuition principal SphiweNgobesesaidtheproblemwiththepupils is that they are confusingthe stages of the registering proc-ess.He saidpupilswho submittedall their required documents forregistering have nothing toworryabout.

“ Registering is the last stage oftheprocess and it hasnot reachedthat stage.Theprocess is current-ly on the second phase where thedepartmentiscapturingalltheda-ta that is required from the docu-ments from the pupils. This proc-ess takes four months and I willcall themat any timewhen every-thing has been done,” saidNgobese.

KwaZulu-Natal educationspokesperson Muzi Mahlambisaid before pupils register withany institution, they must comeand check with the department ifthat institution is operating legal-ly. “If they suspect that there is arawdeal, theymust visit our offic-es so that we can help them. Thisis a private institution butwewel-come them if they have any que-riesconcerningtheinstitution,”hesaid.

KHENYEZAKHENYEZAto know hisfate today>> Case postponement fancied due to uncertainty

LOCAL PSL goal poacher Mabhuti Khenyezawill knowhis fate about his career todaywhenthe South African Football Association’s Ap-pealsBoardhearshis case.TheLidgeton-bornandwell-travelledKhenyezawashandeda12-month ban by the PSL DC for spitting at lines-man Zakhele Siwela when he was still playingAjax Cape Town last season.

Hehas since joinedMpumalangaBlackAc-eswhowere promoted to the PSL from theNa-tionalFirstDivisionat thebeginningof thesea-son.

The unsporting incident happened in theleaguematch againstMamelodi Sundowns onApril 2 at Loftus Stadium.

According to the insiders the sitting is likelytobepostponedagainbecause thebigwigs,es-pecially the PSL rules and constitution “havebeen caught offside”.

Khenyeza’s matter is said to bemore com-plicated for both PSL and the national govern-ing body, Safa.

At first the PSL DC ruled that:–Khenyeza be suspended from all football

activities under the auspices of the League foraperiodof12months (in termsofRule50.14.5of the Rules of the League).

The sentencing and the charge were con-firmed by PSL Prosecutor Nandé Becker.

Afterhewassentencedhisteamatthattime,Ajax fumedandblamed the league fordestroy-ing the player’s career.

Later on the CapeTown-side did not renewKhenyeza’s contract and was clubless.

The case has taken a new twist sinceKhenyeza joinedthenewlypromotedMpuma-langa Black Aces.

Aces management and their legal teamclaim the players is eligible to play because his

matter is still pending. He played during theirofficial first fixtureagainstKaizerChiefs a fort-night ago. Chiefs wrote an official protest be-fore the kick off. Also the PSL CEO Brand DeVilliers came out with guns blazing at firstaboutAces’saction, butnowhe is singingadif-ferent tune after sending a written apology.

Ithasbeenreportedthat thePSLhasadmit-ted they got thewrong end of the stickwith re-gards to Khenyeza’s 12-month ban.

“I therefore apologise unreservedly to youand your club for any embarrassment caused.I also apologise for the League issuing a state-ment referring to the matter.”

According to Khenyeza’s lawyer MichaelMurphy the rule is clear and the player is eligi-ble to play because the matter is still pendingor on-going. Amazayoni’s CEO Mario Morfousays his clubwould be happy to see themattersorted out soon “so that the life of

the player can carry on. The club also needto carry on without any issues still hanging.”-Jerry Barnes

Mabhuti Khenyeza, who used to play for Mamelodi Sundowns beforemoving to Ajax Cape Town and Mpumalanga Black Aces, is to face theSafa Appeals Board today for unsporting behaviour.
