Making do withthe available“When I was 11, I had a growthhormone problem. But beingsmaller I was more agile. And Ilearnt toplaywiththeballontheground because that’s where itfelt more comfortable. Now Irealize that sometimes, badthings can turn out good.”- Lionel Messi.
A footballer should neverallowhimself to be in aweof an-other player. Respect yes, but inawe, no!
It is obvious that Messidecided to focus on his qualitiesand strengths. Remember, hewas training with bigger boyslike Gerard Pique at Barcelonajunior teams.
He chose to mentally look
down on his opposition. Hecared little for their body sizeand focused on his ability andhow he wanted to play.
This should be a good lessonnot only for individual playersbut also for football in SouthAfrica.
“Impossible is Nothing” saysa sportsmanufacturing compa-ny’s slogan.
A lot of reasons have beenmentioned for our failure to dowell internationally.
At one stage, suggestionsweremadeby topSouthAfricanscientists that bigger boys berecruited.
Presently, Spain and Japanare world champions in both
men’s and women’s football.Physically, they are not thebiggest of footballers.
The mind-sets have tochange ifwe are to achieve any-
thing meaningful in world foot-ball. We need to make do withwhatever is available.
I remember as a footballer, Igot my first pair of boots when
I joined Union Jacks, a seconddivision team.Prior to that Ihadto make do with old runningshoes or one boot. Althoughequipment is important, football is played with the feet.
Thereseemtobethethinkingthat we need a Messiah to saveour football from perishing.
Beliefs can lead toall kindsofstupid decisions.
We lack belief in ourselveshenceweexperienceallkindsofproblems. This is also a reasonlocal initiatives do not getsupport.
Our footballers need tounderstandthateverything is intheir own hands. You need tobelieve in your abilities. Beliefdevelopsfromhardwork,quali-ty work, great visualisation andgreat thinking.

THE newly elected Athletics South Africa (ASA)president, Aleck Skhosana, this week receiveda thumbs up from his colleagues and other
influential officials. Many of them feel that the former KwaZulu
Natal Athletics (KZNA) chairman, and exAmanzimtoti College of Education 110 metres hurdler, needstime and support from all quarters in order to survive.
Former ASA and KZNA executive member, DrSimon Dlamini, this week told Echo that Skhosanawas the right candidate to lead the new ASA board.
Dlamini said that the KZN former schools athleteneeded to be supported, and that the fact that hewon elections by such a wide margin means that themajority of regions trust him.
“I personally believe in him and he stands a goodchance of taking athletics in this province to the nextlevel.
“Besides being the former KZNA chairman, he isa former provincial athlete and fully understands theneeds of athletes,” said Dlamini.
Former ASA vice president, 2004 New York andMumbai Marathon winner Hendrick Ramaala, pleaded for cool heads and urged for support fromall role players.
“He really needs to be given a fair chance to dohis job.
“He will also need a lot of support from his board,Sascoc and government,” said Ramaala.
Skhosana this week told the Echo that there
were a couple of things needing to be tackled urgently.
“We need to attract a few sponsors on board inorder to be financially sound. Our administrationneed to be stepped up and we need to make surethat we are united.
“We also need to make sure that ASA is not a oneman band and that we stay open minded. I alsobelieve our development programmes andtransformation need to be a reality,” said Skhosana.
Asked about his old, negative allegations duringhis years as KZNA chairman, Skhosana said theauditors did not find anything wrong on his side.
