Echinoderes arlis, a New Kinorhynch from the Arctic Ocean

THE FIRST KINORHYNCH to be reported fromwithin the Arctic Circle was Centroderes arcticus(Steiner, 1919) new combination. This specieswas originally described in one of several invalid "larval genera," the genus Centr opsisZelinka, 1907. Steiner's description is such thatif a closer study were possible his species mightbe better assigned to the genus Camp yloderesZelinka, 1907, the only other genus in thefamily Centroderidae Zelinka, 1907.
The family Echinoderid ae Biitschli, 1876 hasbeen reported from as far north as Bergen,Norway (Schepotieff, 1907 :134) and thenorthern Baltic Sea (Levander , 1900:19;Karling, 1954: 189). The southernmost limitof this family's distribution is South GeorgiaIsland in the southern Atlantic (Lang, 1949 :17) . Members of the single genus within th isfamily, Echinoderes Claparede, 1863, are widelydistributed and are very common representativesof the phylum Kinorhyncha.
Th e species described in this paper is the firstmember of the genus Echinoderes reportedfrom within the Arctic Circle and is from thegreatest recorded depth for the phylum.

DESCRIPTION: Holotypic female, 420fl trunklength (trunk length measured between anteriormargin of segment 3 and posterior margin ofsegment 13) ; msw-10, 85fl (maximum sternalwidth at segment 10-a measurement across theanterior margin of widest sternal plates); sw12, 70fl (stern al width at segment 12-a similar measurement) ; trunk length-msw ratio4.9: 1, trunk length-sw-12 ratio 6.0 :1.

placids, midventral placid truncate, distinctlylarger than others; trichoscalid plates not observed.
Trunk segments (segments 3-13) withnumerous hairs, often very long, up to 17fl,pattern distinctive ( Figs. 1 and 2) .
Posterior border of each trunk segment withpectinate frin ge except for terminal tergal plate.
Middorsal spines long, on segments 6, 8, and10, 73fl, 92fl, and 1 25~l ; lateral spines onsegments 8-11 , all approximately 42 1l in length;accessory lateral spines of segment 13, 67fl inlength , 0.32 X the lateral terminal spines ;lateral terminal spines 210fl in length , 0.50 Xthe trunk length .
Posterior margin of terminal tergal platedeeply incised, forming broadly rounded margins which abruptly form elongate spinous projections (Figs. 1 and 2); sternal plates ofterminal segment with broadly rounded marginspositioned anterior to the limits of the tergalmargin.
Pachycycli (thickened anterior margins of thetrunk segments) well developed ; muscle scarsprominent only on medial portion of twelthsternal plates.
Pigmented eye-spots not noted due to preservation; adhesive tubes 20ll in length , onventral surface of segment four , directly anteriorto tergal-sterna l junction of fifth segment.
Allotypic male, 382fl trunk length; msw-l0,73fl; sw-12, 6 51l; trunk length-msw ratio5.2:1 , trunk length- sw-12 ratio 5.9 :1; flexiblepenis spines 20fl in length, originating fromanterolateral margin of terminal sternal plates;accessory lateral spines 40fl in length, shorterthan those of female; lateral terminal spineslonger than in female, 238fl in length, 0.62 Xtrunk length .
The range in trunk length for all femalesexamined was 380-420fl ; all but the holotypewere mounted laterally, preventing furtherrange measurements concerning width . Lateralterminal spines measured 210-2241l in length,

0.50-0.59 X the trunk length ; lateral accessoryspines measured 67-8011 in length , 0.280.32 X the lateral terminal spine length ; middorsal spines of segments 6, 8, and 10 measured73-76 11, 92-11011 and 115-12611 in length;lateral spines were more nearly equal in length ,measuring 34-4511.
The range in trunk length for all malesexamined was 382-42011 ; the maximum sternalwidth occurred at segment 10 and measured73-80f!, giving a trunk length-msw ratio of5.2: 1 in all males. Th e sternal width at segment12 measured 65-71f!, giving a trunk lengthsw-12 ratio of 5.9:1 in all males. Lateral terminal spines measured 230-23811 in length,0.55-0.62 X the trunk length; the lateral accessory spines were measured only in the allotype;middorsal spines of segments 6, 8, and 10measured 79-89f!, 98-10511 and 105-11511 inlength; lateral spines were more nearly equal inlength, measuring 33-44f!.
TYPE LOCALITY: 74.5° N , 163.9° W , from adepth of 747 m.
MATERIAL EXAMINED : Six specimens; fourfemales and two males. Holotypic female(author's number K 57.1) and one other femalefrom type locality, station 360, Arctic ResearchLaboratory Ice Station 1 (ARLIS-1, from whichthe species name is derived), off Point Barrow,Alaska, collected by John Tibbs , 16-1 7 January1961. Allotypic male (author's number K 58.4)one other male and two females from station446 (74 .8° N, 165.6° W) , ARLIS-1, collectedby John Tibbs , 9-10 February 1961, from adepth of 419 m.
DISPOSITION OF TYPES: Holotypic female(USNM 32924) , and allotypic male (USNM32923) have been deposited in the marineinvertebrate collection of the U. S. N ationalMuseum. The remaining paratypes are in theauthor 's personal collection.
REMARKS : Ecbinoderes arlis n. sp. is withinthe size limits of several species including E.pilosus Lang, 1949, E. bengalensis (Timm,1958), E. pennalei H iggins, 1960, and E.breoispinosns Higgins, 1966, but differs fromthese by having elongate middorsa l spines onsegments 6, 8, and 10. Only one species,E. riedli Higgins, 1965, has the same middorsalspine arrangement and this is a very small

species, 22811 in length, recently described fromthe Red Sea.
The lateral spination of E. arlis n. sp. isshared by E. setigera Greeff, 1869, E. pilosusand E. leoanderi Karling, 1954, but other thanfor E. setigera, whose middorsa l spines are onsegments 6, 7, and 9, the remainder have a fullcomplement of middorsal spines on segments6 through 10.
In addtion , E. arlis n. sp. dffiers from allother members of this genus by the shape of theterminal border of segment 13.
