Objectives• Generate instantaneous overcurrent signals using

SEL adaptive multi-channel source (AMS)• Detect high current using 50P1P instantaneous

overcurrent element pickup in SEL 451 • Establish communication between SEL 451 and RTAC

using SEL proprietary protocol• Display the status of circuit breaker using RTAC HMI

Generating fault current using AMS• Created the test file to

apply the overcurrent signals using SEL 5401 Relay Test Software. The three states are as shown

• The fault state with 3 Amp current is shown

Instantaneous Overcurrent Element in SEL 451

• The overcurrent from AMS cause 50P1P pickup.• The threshold value for 50P1P is set to 2 Amps, so 3

Amps from AMS trips the breaker• Asserts OUT101 relay word bit which is then

transferred to RTAC using SEL protocol • It is mapped using tag processor to display breaker

status on HMI

RTAC Implementation• Connect SEL 451 to RTAC using cable C273A• Use client- serial configuration and tag processor to

map the relay tags to Master station• Configure a serial connection from the RTAC to the SEL

451 using SEL protocol to collect targets and meter data.

• SEL Fast Messaging Protocol is proprietary protocol for serial communication
