Note:
The figure doesn't include
• national trade which also uses UN/LOCODE
• trade in services
• other applications (like European Maritime Safety agency or FLUX which processes 1.2 million messages per day) which use UN/LOCODE but don't issue trade documents
• the fact that with eBusiness there is more data transmitted and more copies generated (hence more UN/LOCODES)
UN/LOCODE is used for at least 1.5 billions times for international trade each year.

Milestones:
• 2000: Directories are published biannually instead of annually
• 2001: Rename of UN/LOCODE from ‘the United Nations Code for Ports and Other Locations’ to ‘the United Nations Code for Trade and Transport Locations’
• 2002: Restructuring of the UN/LOCODE database by defining a new model. The UN/LOCODE directories are generated in formats of text, CSV, HTML and MS Access file and are published in the UNECE website.
• 2004: Launch of UN/LOCODE Online Data Maintenance Request System to enable registered users to submit online requests for new entries and modification.
2015: UN/LOCODE Focal Point Network establishment
2017: UN/LOCODE Advisory Group setup

website confirming the submitted data into the field ’Web link’ of the form
• fill in the remaining mandatory input fields. Incomplete or unproved requests will be considered depending on the availability of the Secretariat’s resources.

Step 3 Online request submission • Request for changes, including changes in location name, other meta data and deletion.
UN/LOCODE DMR Submission
• Changes in place names will be accepted only from official and authoritative sources.
• Changes of existing LOCODEs will be accepted only exceptionally and when convincing reasons have been presented, or when it can be established that the existing code has never been put into actual use.
• Changes in subdivisions will be accepted only when evidence is presented that a published subdivision code is erroneous.
• Changes of functions will be accepted if the existing entry is incomplete or erroneous
• Completion of coordinates will be encouraged where they are missing and accepted if the published coordinates are not correct.
