Introduction
Hello Eastern Canada! !I hope that you have had a spectacular summer break! It’s that time of year to get back on the school schedule: early mornings and late nights filled with homework, but it’s not all bad because the start of school signals the START OF KEY CLUB! As many of you know, usually the hardest month for clubs is September as you have to go through the process of membership recruitment and dues again. However, there is no need to worry because the Eastern Canada District Board is here to help! !In this newsletter, you will find tips and tricks to starting a successful Key Club year. Topics from dues to district and international convention are covered! !IT and Sister Districts! At the end of July, it was announced that Gary Cheng, from the Michigan District will serve as our International Trustee. I know that he will do an amazing job! Additionally, our new Sister Districts are the Capital District and the Caribbean-Atlantic District!
It’s a new year of
friends, service
and Key Club! !Yours in Service,
Mona Adib From left to right: Mona (ECD), Hanna (Caribbean-Atlantic), Gary (IT) and Anastasia (Capital).
Revision of Preferred Charities Key Clubs can raise money for many organizations, but these are
KCI’s preferred organizations. Let’s make sure we know who we raise money for!
Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals is a nonprofit organization that strives to raise money to assist hospitalized children. All contributions directly benefit hospitals, helping to purchase up-to-date equipment, train staff, conduct life-saving research, and provide health care for children whose guardians can’t afford to pay. For more information: www.keyclub.org/service/fund/osp/cmn.aspx
March of Dimes strives to improve the health of babies by preventing birth defects, premature birth, and infant mortality. After the discovery of the polio vaccine, March of Dimes focused their efforts to improve the health of babies and has been successful with the help and enthusiasm of many volunteers. For more information: www.keyclub.org/service/fund/osp/marchofdimes.aspx
UNICEF, an organization of the UN dedicated exclusively to children, works with other UN bodies, governments and non-governmental organizations to assist in children’s needs through community-based services in primary health care, basic education, and safe water and sanitation. We’re all working for a common goal…
Why not work together?
!You’ve probably heard it thousands of times: the
Eliminate Project, the Eliminate Project, the Eliminate Project, the Eliminate Project.
Before school starts, let’s do a small review (there may or may not be a test).
What is the Eliminate Project? Kiwanis International and UNICEF are working together to eradicate maternal and neonatal tetanus. In order to eliminate MNT approximately 100 million mothers must be immunized. This initiative requires money for vaccines, storage, transportation and human resources such as skilled staff.
The Eliminate Project.
What is MNT? Maternal and Neonatal Tetanus (MNT) is a disease commonly found in developing countries that affects mothers and infants. Babies with MNT suffer from excruciating pain (sensitive to light and touch) for the first two weeks after birth. The chance of survival after that is incredibly low.
How is MNT caused? MNT occurs when there is contact between open wounds or cuts and tetanus spores found in soil during childbirth. Without proper sanitation and equipment such as birthing mats, women can acquire this disease and pass it on to all their future children.
Mothers are immunized by 3 doses of the vaccine which costs a total of $1.80.
An infant
dies every 9
minutes from
MNT.
This is the final stretch.
!So let’s make it count.
A Key Club International Preferred Charity

Carter the Cardinal
Carter
Fun Facts about the Cardinal:
The cardinal is the only red bird in North
America with a crest (tuft of feathers) on its
head. The tuft rises when the bird senses
danger.
The red bird from angry birds is actually
a cardinal! !!!
Cardinals are fairly social and join in flocks that even
include birds of other species. Like Key
Clubbers, cardinals are inclusive!

TIPS
Quick Facts
Link: www.keyclub.org/service/fund/yof/
yofgrant.aspx
- Only apply for a partial amount of your entire budget. You are more likely to receive the grant if Key Club International knows you are funding the project externally. For example, if your entire budget is $1500, apply for $500-$1000.
- Always apply for a bit more than you need. Sometimes, KCI will grant you an amount slightly smaller than what was asked.
- Be as specific as you can in your budget. For example, instead of listing “Food”, break it down to “Snacks”, “Lunch”, “Drinks”, “Utensils”, etc.
- Remember that no electronic signatures (for the final page of the application) are accepted!
- Since the grant is a reimbursement, ensure that you keep all receipts! - Submit the application on time! Application is due October 15 at 11:59 PM EST.

Paying Dues What’s happening to dues?
At the House of Delegates during ICON, it was decided that there will be a 50 cent
increase on international dues. That means that International Dues are now $7.00 US and
District Dues are still $6.50 US.
Why do we pay dues? A common question is why do we even
have to pay dues? Here’s where your dues go to:
- Resources for club building, chartering and member recruitment
- District and club officer training materials - Support for districts and divisions - Official Key Club website and social
media accounts - Weekly updates to members and advisors - Key Club magazine (mailed to schools) - Convention planning - District and club awards - Liability insurance
How do we collect dues? Firstly, please ensure that all potential members are educated about dues and the reasons why we pay them.
Secondly, the Club Treasurer and Club Secretary must work together to collect
the dues and keep track of who has paid, as well as record personal
information of paid members such as name, email, year of graduation,etc.. Once a member has paid, they must
be registered into the Membership Update Centre (faculty advisors will be emailed the login email and password to access their club’s account). Once names are registered, print an invoice,
and with the help of your faculty/Kiwanis advisor or school
administration, send in a cheque to Key Club International or pay by credit card. If none of this sounds familiar to you, don’t worry; more educational
resources will be sent out soon!
Big Tip #2: Don’t wait till all members have been registered in the Membership Update
Centre to send in your money to Key Club International! You can always register
more members as the year progresses!
Big Tip #1: Do not wait until all your members have
paid to begin registering them in the Membership Update Centre.
Why did dues increase? Key Club International had a large deficit this past year. Due to this deficit, money had to
be drawn from reserves, which does not abide by sustainable business practices. By
increasing dues, money for the deficit is accounted for and we are able to replenish
the reserves.
No need to freak out, the District Board is here to help!
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Important
Deadlines!
Early Birds - By this time, you want to have paid your dues! Remember that you can always register more members throughout the year, and
send another payment to KCI. !EARLY BIRDS - BY NOVEMBER 1, 2014
Regular deadline - If you pay after December 1st, your club’s dues are delinquent! It is recommended that you pay your dues at least 2
weeks before December 1st.
Regular - BY DECEMBER 1, 2014
Suspended Status - If your club has not paid their dues, your club will acquire the suspended status! !
Suspension - AFTER FEBRUARY 1, 2015
It’s not too late to…
JOIN COMMITTEES
This is coming from personal experience: District Committees are amazing! You are able to work with Key Clubbers from all over Eastern Canada, make a big difference in your District and see a completely different side of Key Club. It doesn’t matter if you are a club executive or a regular member, you can make a huge difference for clubs throughout Eastern Canada by being part of committees!
Why should I join committees? By joining committees, you get to: - be more involved in the District - make a direct impact for clubs - work with members from all over Eastern
Canada - acquire the knowledge and experience you
need to run for a higher position (Lieutenant Governor, International Trustee, etc.)
- learn a lot more about Key Club - play Warlight with members after meetings!
What do I have to do to join? All you need to do is fill out a short application created to let the committee chairs get to know you better! Remember that committees do require a time commitment of at least one online meeting per month and some committee work. The workload is definitely manageable!
