Ecclesiology came from two Latin words “ecclesia” and “logos”

◦“Ecclesia” which means congregation or church.

◦“Logos” which means study

Page 3: Ecclesiology Catholic Church

The Latin “Ecclesia” from Greek ek-ka-lein means to “call out of.” In Church, God is “calling together” His

people from all the ends of the word.

The equivalent Greek term KYRIAKE, from which the English word Church and the German Kirche are derived, means “what belongs to the Lord”

Page 4: Ecclesiology Catholic Church

There are two meaning:

1. The Church is the “house of prayer”-Mark 11:17,

2. “The Church is the congregation of all baptized person professing one faith, one Lord, one baptism and the same sacraments under the authority of one visible head, the Supreme Pontiff or the Pope.”

– St. Robert Bellarmine

– Daniel 2: 44

“ You are Peter and upon this rock I will build my church, and even the gates of hell shall not prevail against it”

- St. Matthew 16:18

“Set up signs and mark the road (way)”-Jeremiah 31:21

The Way is the Church. Acts 24:14; 19:9

The Church is therefore can be found through its Marks.

Page 12: Ecclesiology Catholic Church

1.) It must be an outward sign. If it’s not, it’s useless as a means of identification. A mark must be evident to everyone.

2.) It must be essential characteristic, one without which the Church cannot exist as Christ’s Church. Marks of the Church don’t exist only as means of identification but must be a part of the very nature of the Church

Page 13: Ecclesiology Catholic Church

For Example:◦INFALLIBILITY- is an essential characteristic but not visible, so

it’s not a mark.

◦MIRACLES- are visible characteristics but not essential so it’not a mark.

Page 14: Ecclesiology Catholic Church

The Church is:

ONEHOLYCATHOLICAPOSTOLIC

These 4 Marks have the essential and visible characteristics.

Page 15: Ecclesiology Catholic Church

The Church is one in:SOURCE- the highest exemplar and source of this mystery is the unity, in the Trinity of Persons, of one God, the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit.

-(Eph. 4:6 “One Lord, one Faith, One Baptism”)

FOUNDER- St. John 10:16 “There is only one flock (Church) and one shepherd (Jesus Christ)”

SOUL- It is the Holy Spirit. (Acts 1:8; Eph. 4:4- one body and one Spirit)

-Catechism of the Catholic Church par. 813

Page 16: Ecclesiology Catholic Church

The unity of the Church is assured also in the visible bonds of communion:

a.) In the profession of one faith received from the Apostles.

b.) Common celebration of divine worship, especially in the sacraments.

c.) One government and the Apostolic succession.

Page 17: Ecclesiology Catholic Church

The Catholic Church is holy in her:a.) Origin – Christ our Lord, the

founder of the Church, is Holy.

b.) Purpose – the sanctification and salvation of mankind.

c.) Means – the teachings of Christ, the commandments, the

liturgy (mass), the sacraments, the sacramentals and prayers.

d.) Fruit – the Martyrs, the Saints; St. Matthew 7: 15-20 “By their fruits you will know them”

““Be Holy for I Be Holy for I am Holy”am Holy”

Page 18: Ecclesiology Catholic Church

The word catholic comes from the Greek work Katholikos or Katholos which means universal, general, complete, whole world and all embracing.(St. Matthew 28:19; St. Mark 16:15; Acts 1:8; St. Matthew 24:14; Rome 1:8)

The Church is Catholic in three ways:◦ a.) In TIME – from the apostles to present.◦ b.) In PLACE – not confined to one part of the

world but teaches through out the whole world.(Mt. 28:19)

◦ c.) In DOCTRINE – it teaches the same doctrine and administer the same sacraments everywhere to all class of people.

Page 19: Ecclesiology Catholic Church

APOSTOLIC – which means that the Church is founded during the time of the apostles.

“ You are built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets” –Eph. 2:20

Apostolic Succession – the Pope is the successor of St. Peter, the first Pope.(St. Matthew 16:18; St. John 21:15-19)

Page 20: Ecclesiology Catholic Church

1.) ORIGIN- she was and remains built on “the foundation of the Apostles.”-(Eph. 2:20; Rev. 21:14

2.) TEACHING- with the help of the Spirit dwelling in her, the Church keeps and hands on the teaching(Acts 2:42) “good deposit,” the salutary words She has heard from the Apostles (2 Tim. 1:13-14)

3.) SUCCESSION- She continues to be taught, sanctified, and guide by the Apostles until Christ’s return through the successor of St. Peter and the Aposles, the Pope and the Bishops. (Ti 1:5; Acts 14:23; 1 Tim 4:14; Acts 1:20, 25-26)

Page 21: Ecclesiology Catholic Church

INDEFECTIBILITY- that the Christ will last and will not perish until the end of time.

Daniel 2:44 - “cannot be destroyed”Mt. 28:20 – “Christ assured that He will remain with His Church foreverMt. 16:18 – “even the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.”

Page 22: Ecclesiology Catholic Church

1 Tim 3:15 – “the Church is the pillar ad foundation of Truth.”

Page 23: Ecclesiology Catholic Church

Page 24: Ecclesiology Catholic Church

MEMBERSHIP of the Church

◦Explicit Membership – this includes all baptized Catholics

◦Implicit Membership – Baptism by blood, baptism by desire and invincible ignorance

Page 26: Ecclesiology Catholic Church

All men are obliged to become a member at least in desire. Protestants and non-Christian religions can be saved IF,through no fault of their own they do not know that the Catholic Church is the True Church, but they love God and try to do his will.

1 Tim 2:4- “God wishes all men to be saved.2 Cor. 5:15 – “Christ died for all.”

Page 27: Ecclesiology Catholic Church

“Outside the Church there is no salvation”

-St. Cyprian

Page 28: Ecclesiology Catholic Church

Basing itself on Scripture and Tradition, the Council teaches that the Church, a pilgrim now on earth, is necessary for salvation: the one Christ is the mediator and the way of salvation; he is present to us in his body which is the Church. He himself explicitly asserted the necessity of faith and Baptism, and thereby affirmed at the same time the necessity of the Church which men enter through Baptism as through a door. Hence they could not be saved who, knowing that the Catholic Church was founded as necessary by God through Christ, would refuse either to enter it or to remain in it.

-Catechism of the Catholic Church, paragraph 846

Page 29: Ecclesiology Catholic Church

“Whoever is separated from the Church is separated from the promises of Christ..... one cannot have God as his Father if he has not the Church as his Mother”
