ECA Playdown Championships Update 2

1
Friday 5 th Feb The long dark teatime in the umpires soul! or so it seemed at the time. Note to skips and teams, playing to speed usually prevents the umpire from getting grumpy especially on the "cold" back sheets at Greenacres. Sheet C should have been sheet E but overrunning electrical work meant a switch of sheets, so MacDougall vs Brown had a reprieve from the back sheets. The scoreline would suggest a more onesided game than what transpired. For team Brown it was just one of those games where nothing went quite right. Handshakes after 7 ends at 93. Sheet D saw Balfour vs Hawker and one or two "moments". The result of which were one or two slow ends which caused the umpire some concern. Moment "1" was a miscount of last stone, resulting in an unexpected steal of 4 in the 4th end to Hawker. A resilient chipping away with singles and then a mighty 5 in the 9 th to Balfour. The 10th end resulted in the inevitable running out of stones with the final score 106 to Balfour. Sheet F was another closely fought game with Bowyer very much in control until the 9th. After much, much discussion Malton went for and got a rather tricky 3, thus levelling the score going into the last without the hammer. Malton's last looked heavy but got a wick into the centre against 4 Bowyer stones. Bowyer's last caught the guard and Malton came away the victor at 76. Results after session 5, MENS MacDougall 2 wins Malton 2 wins Bowyer 0 Brown 0 WOMENS Balfour 3 wins Hawker 2 wins Young 0 Thanks again to James Hustler (Chief Umpire)
