Open source

What does ‘open source’ mean
Open Source refers to ‘source code’ that makes up software that is openly available for anyone to read, modify and distribute.
• Main Con: malicious users can see the source code allowing for potential exploitation (hacking!)
• Main Pro: a large number of people inputting to the development of the code. Can be cost effective.

Choosing the right tool for the job
WordPress: Hugely popular. Easy to use. Best for blog or simple business sites.
Joomla: Very popular. Not as simple to use as WordPress, but lots of scope for adding functionality.
Drupal: Similar to Joomla, but requires more technical knowledge than Joomla.
Magento Community: Example of full e-Commerce solution.

5 action points
1. New content is important, change something! (Add a new product, a news story, a new feature on your Home page.)
2. Have a look at your website and identify if there are there are any limitations on what you can currently amend
:: Can you add Google Analytics?:: Can you manage your Title tags, meta tags, h1 and other semantics?:: Can you add new pages and name them sensibly?
3. Check if you can amend things on your site via a mobile device?
4. Check if your pages display ok on mobile devices?
5. Set a monthly schedule for updating your site so your content is always fresh and up-to-date
