3D IssueDigital Publishing SoftwareA Publisher’s Guide to Devices And Formats
eReaders eReaders such as the Amazon Kindle, Sony eReader and eReader Apps such as iBooks on the iPad require eReader format publications.
eBooks would need to be either .Mobi (for Kindle) or .ePub for other eReaders.
These files can be downloaded to the eReader device via an online or simply by supplying the file to your readers directly.
TabletsThe tablet category contains; iPad and the Samsung Galaxy.
These devices have web browsers (for example Safari on the iPad) so readers can view digital magazines via the browser.
Ensure online browser viewed publications built using a solution that creates a HTML5 output.
Mobile DevicesDevices such as iPhones and Android phones also have a web browser, so as Tablets - these devices can view online publications.
Again, consideration needs to be made as Apple iPhone like the iPad cannot view flash – so the HTML5 digital publication would be a consideration.
Again, like the Tablet category, these mobile devices often have eReader Apps such as iBooks, so eReader (.epub) files can be viewed in iBooks.
Desktops, Laptops, Macs/PCs, Netbooks
This category would view digital publications via a web browser.
Could also view via an Application running on the machine.
Most web browsers run both HTML5 and Flash too so eBooks created in this way can be viewed on these devices.

For Publishers Moving To Digital
Your publication typeWhen deciding which format to create, consider your publication type.
If the publication is a traditional book then you would probably consider publishing in eReader format. Whereas if you have a more graphical, media rich publication such as brochures, magazines, etc.. then an online web publication may suit better.
Your audienceThere are many devices available to your audience.
If you want to create a publication that is viewable to iPad readers then consider that if you have a Native Apple App, then readers on other devices would not be able to view these.
If you create a Web based digital magazine then your audience on devices that have a browser which include iPad, iPhone, Desktops, Laptops etc… can all view the publication.
If you create a .ePub or .Mobi then you can target the eReader device owners.
