A quick note:

At the June 8, 2014 Ebenezer UCC congregational meeting there was some concern about

the pastor taking a more active role in the supervision of the staff here at church. There was some

good discussion about whether we need to make changes to the EBUCC constitution and by-laws

to accommodate this shift in role. The EBUCC constitution states in Article VI, Section B,

Paragraph 4 under Consistory Responsibilities that “The Consistory shall be responsible for the

employment and supervision of any salaried personnel…” This does not change. Consistory has

ultimate authority on all matters of staffing. The plan is that the pastor would take a coordinating

role, working with existing teams and committees to insure continuity of process and consistency

in staff evaluations and reports to the Consistory body.

In Section VII, Section C, Paragraph 2 under Responsibilities and Rights of the pastor it

states that “…(pastor shall) perform all duties as belong to the pastor’s office in the UCC and as

may be determined by the Consistory.” This duty in regards to staffing is assigned by the

Consistory and remains Consistory’s ultimate responsibility.

It does not appear that we need to modify the EBUCC Constitution for this change. We

will need to adjust the Employee Handbook.

The hope is that this shift will lead to greater staff continuity and a smoother process for the

congregation and the staff. Please feel free to catch me if you have any questions. Thanks!

NEWS FROM YOUR WOMEN’S GROUP

The next regular monthly meeting of the Women of the Church group will be on Tuesday, September 2 at

7 p.m. Discussion of the upcoming Bazaar will be high on the agenda. The meeting is held in the craft

room located at the end of the hall on the first floor. We consider all the women of Ebenezer to be part of

our group and would love to have more of you join us.

Quilt Raffle tickets went on sale in early August, and ticket envelopes are being distributed. To get your

envelope of tickets to sell, see Ruth Bell any Sunday morning. Thank you to Rd Fuel and Heating Inc. for

sponsoring printing of the tickets; thank you to the quilters for once again providing the quilt, and to all

those who provided cash prizes and gift certificates to be awarded in our raffle. If you can help us by

selling tickets to family and friends or just need some for yourself, see Ruth Bell (610-298-2696), or Bev

Kistler (610-298-2903). Tickets are $1 each or 6 for $5.

IT’S COMING UP QUICKLY! HELP US GET READY!

SEPTEMBER 27, 2014, 8 A.M. TO 2 P.M.

☺☻☺☻☺

FIRST: Men, Wednesday night, September 24, 7 p.m., we need you to set up the tables for the

bazaar. Extra tables are being brought in, so there will be plenty to do. With a good crew, this

can be done in an hour.

And, again! Saturday, September 27, 2 p.m. We need manpower after the Bazaar is over!

We’re borrowing a lot of tables, so starting at 2 p.m., we need men to fold up and move tables

back to where they belong and chairs to be brought back in so the fellowship hall is ready for

church Sunday morning! Guys, please help your wives! Be there!

☺☻☺☻☺

For those of you who might be new to this event, it is our biggest fundraiser of the year. It

includes several different sales, i.e., a huge flea market, a kids’ flea market, our kitchen café,

crafts and ceramic bisqueware, a used book sale, quilted and needlework items, and a silent

auction which runs from 8:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Many years ago, the Consistory at that time

directed that the profits from this event be divided 50% - 50% among local charities and our

church. That practice continues today. Last year, the profits totaled about $5,600. There are so

many ways in which every member can get involved in this event.

Page 13: Ebenezer UCC Tidings€¦ · Sept 7 Ben Fruchtl Marvin & Karen Gruber (U) Donald & Beverly Rex (L) 14 Morgan Bentley William & Faye Wetzel (U) Carl & Donna Herman (L) 21 Jordan Lowthert

Are you saving books for the Book Nook, household items for the flea market or kids’

things for the Children’s Flea Market? Bring them now! Put them in Room 114 on the first

floor, clearly marked “Flea Market,” “Children’s Flea Market,” or “Book Nook.” Deadline for all

items is September 15, 2014. Remember, all items must be clean and in working order.

If you make homemade jam, jellies, chow-chow, corn salad, pickles, etc. can you spare a

few jars for the Bazaar? These items are included in the bake sale along with home-made

soups in quart or pint jars. Be sure to label the jars so we know what we’re selling.

About the bake sale: Ladies, please bake cakes, pies, cookies, raised cakes, sticky buns,

shoo-fly pies, etc. AND, let’s not forget sugar-free baked goods for diabetics. One thing we’ve

noticed about bake sales: It’s much easier to sell a small cake or half-a-cake than a whole layer

cake or a whole 9” x 13” cake, So if you’re baking cakes, could you consider cutting them in half?

We need homemade soups too -- soups to go should be in quart or pint jars, or you can bring a

pot of soup to be sold by the bowl in the Kitchen Café. Items being donated to the Bazaar can be

brought to the church between 8 a.m. and 3 p.m. on Friday, the 26th, or very early Saturday

morning, the 27th. Be sure to mark your baked goods and your soups/canned goods so we know

what kind they are.

Can you donate something to the Silent Auction? Items should be placed in the craft room

or given directly to Eileen Breininger so they don’t get mixed into the flea market or book nook.

Make sure items are marked “Silent Auction.” Deadline is also September 15, 2014. We need

donations for the auction, i.e., jewelry, linens, home décor items, movie tickets, gift

cards/certificates ($10, $15 or more if you so choose) from department stores, restaurants, pizza

parlors, ice cream parlors, grocery stores, gas stations, etc. If you are willing to help by donating

something yourself or going out to solicit donations from businesses, please let Eileen know (610-

767-8882).

Do you have completed craft projects or needlework you want to donate to the bazaar? Make

sure you speak to Lois Xander, 610-391-1073. Craft projects from the congregation would be

exciting additions to the bazaar.

Something new: We have received a donation of a large number of beautiful bisqueware pieces.

We will be painting these to sell on the craft tables. We paint on Tuesday mornings from 9 a.m. to

noon. If you would like to help, please call Lois at 610-391-1073.

The Kitchen Café will be selling light breakfast and hearty lunches. You can bring a pot of soup

or chili or cabbage and noodles, cakes and pies to be cut up and sold by the piece, cupcakes or

other finger foods, etc. If you have questions about what to bring for the Kitchen Cafe, contact

Sherry Hinkle at 610-767-6727.

Page 14: Ebenezer UCC Tidings€¦ · Sept 7 Ben Fruchtl Marvin & Karen Gruber (U) Donald & Beverly Rex (L) 14 Morgan Bentley William & Faye Wetzel (U) Carl & Donna Herman (L) 21 Jordan Lowthert

WE NEED LOTS OF HELP: If you can help us get ready for the bazaar or work a few hours on

the day of the bazaar, contact the chairperson of the area where you want to help:

Kitchen Sherry Hinkle 610-767-6727

Bake Sale Anna Mae George 610-799-2176

Book Nook Bev Kistler 610-298-2903

Flea Market Barbara Rauch 610-298-2758

Crafts Lois Xander 610-391-1073

Quilting Kay Symons 610-298-3363

Silent Auction Eileen Breininger 610-767-8882

Many hands working together make the workload for this project a lot lighter and add to the fun of

the day. Plan to be a part of it by helping when and where you can, by cooking or baking, or by

bringing people to shop at the bazaar. Working together, we can have another very successful

day!

BE SURE TO TELL YOUR FRIENDS, NEIGHBORS AND RELATIVES

ABOUT OUR BAZAAR AND INVITE THEM TO COME!

SEE YOU THERE!

thank you to the Ebenezer family. Your generosity,

kindness and concern for Gloria these past months

our heart.”

The wine tasting party had (19) people in attendance and $829 was our profit. (10) to (12) families attended Family Movie Night and $64 was donated toward the piano repairs. Thank you to all who participated/helped in any way!! You have helped flavor our stew!!

Upcoming and on-going opportunities to help Ebenezer include the following:
