Introduction

It is our pleasure to present you this year’s European BEST Engineering Competition Ghent, shortly EBEC Ghent. During this event on the 5th of March 2014, teams of stu-dents will use their techni-cal, social and communication skills to complete a specfic task. Under given conditions (time, situation, materials, etc.), they compete to de-liver the highest possib-le quality in terms of perfor-mance, cost and innovation. Our goal is to select the best teams and prepare them to make it to the EBEC fi-nal in Riga, August 2014.

Since 2002 we have organi-sed this kind of competiti-on every year and to this day we try to improve its concept and features. During the past years we have engaged in a closer cooperation with Ghent University by involving the dean and professors of our faculty in the jury of the competition. Simultaneously, we also seek to strengthen our ties with the corporate world. This allows us to add another dimension to the competition. A central theme in the philosophy of BEST is that students, companies and

universities are intercon-nected and strengthen each other through interaction. If this philosophy is part of your company’s vision, it may lead to a partnership from which we can both profit! On behalf of the enthusiastic or-ganising team of the European BEST Engineering Competition Ghent.

BEST FACTS

• 95 Universities• 1 300 000 students• 33 European countries• 3600 members• 83 local EBEC rounds • 15 competitions at national and regional level• 1 final round with 120 finalists from all over Europe

The Board of European Students of Technology (BEST) is a non-profit and non-political organiza-tion that has been enabling co-operation, communication and student exchanges with the most important technical faculties and universities throughout Europe since 1989.

Throughout the years BEST has grown into a mature and well-structured international orga-nization and succeeded in uni-ting 95 universities spread over 33 countries. BEST has been

collaborating with the University of Ghent for 17 years and accu-mulated approximately 130 alum-ni so far. Today our local BEST group consists of about 30 ac-tive members spreading the BEST spirit among the en-gineering students by orga-nizing all kinds of academic and non-academic activities. Including the international stu-dents attending courses and other events, BEST Ghent cur-rently reaches a target audience of more than 2000 engineering students. We strive to broaden

the horizon of European tech-nology students and increa-se cross-border co-operation. In addition, BEST activities ma-nage to close the triangle ‘stu-dents-companies-universities’. Since BEST is also run by stu-dents, the organization of such events offers their members unique opportunities to deve-lop their soft skills and establish networks with several internatio-nal institutions and corporations.

Complementary education

Throughout the year we orga-nise learning, self-development courses for European students. They get to know the newest technologies, work on their soft skills and reach scientific achie-vements while making friends from all over Europe.

Career Support

BEST offers students career sup-port on their virtual career por-tal, where more than 30.000 registered users can find job offers, seminars, internships… All provided by our international partners.

BEST Engineering Competitions

During the EBEC competitions, participants can develop their social and co-operational skills by working on a team design or case study for which they have to make use of both their creativity and technical knowledge.

ABOUT BEST

MAIN ACTIVITIES

4 Board of European Students of Technology

The Dean Talks

The Faculty of Engineering and Architecture at Ghent University is internationally renowned, not only for its educational programs but also for its research activi-ties. Indeed, we are participating in numerous international edu-cational programs (via Erasmus Student Exchange, by taking the (co)lead in several Erasmus Mundus Programs, via internati-onal internships, via our National Secretariat of IAESTE mandate - the International Association for the Exchange of Students for Technical Experience, ...). And we are a (key) partner in nu-merous national and internati-onal research projects and net-works as well.

Of course, internationalisati-on isn‘t just about professors or researchers going abroad to give lectures at foreign univer-sities or to have research mee-tings with international teams. Internationalisation starts with students! Students leaving their familiar surroundings to take courses abroad, and vice versa: foreign students coming to our faculty, and hence, enriching our faculty community.

In this context, our Local BEST Group plays a crucial role. They send students to other European universities, to participate in courses and workshops. They organize complementary cour-ses, and engineering competi-tions, where students can impro-ve their skills in an interactive (I would even say: often very lively) way.

Every year, our Local BEST Group is organising EBEC Local Ghent, this competition has grown

significantly during the last ye-ars, from 40 to 100 participants and the professionalism of the event grew along with it. I hope to see you on the 5 th of march!

Yours sincerely,

Rik Van de WalleDean of the Faculty of Engineering and Architecture

EBEC Explained

CONCEPT

One of the core activities of BEST is the organi-sation of engineering competitions. Teams of four students compete against each other in solving real problems of companies (Case Study) or con-structing a solution for a given task with a limited amount of materials and within a limited period of time (Team Design). The winning team will be selected based on accomplishment of the task, innovation, and presentation.

At our Local BEST Engineering Competition, teams of Ghent University students com- pete in Team Design or Case Study. They get judged by a jury consisting of company delegates, professors and the dean.

The winner can go to EBEC Benelux. Besides this competition, we also organise one for high school students to let them disco- ver the university, BEST and engi-neering competitions.

The winners of the 7 local competitions in Belgium and the Netherlands will con-tend in Case Study and Team Design at

EBEC Benelux. The winning teams in each competition will go on to the next and final round: EBEC Final.
