First Aid Response

(Occupational First Aid)

Replacing: Occupational First Aid – QQI (FETAC) Level 5 From the 1st of September 2017

The Health & Safety Authority (HSA) will only recognise PHECC FAR as meeting the needs

of OFA in workplaces. HSA now recognises the PHECC First Aid Response (FAR) training

course as meeting the needs of occupational first aid.

What is FAR?: The FAR Standard was developed by the Pre Hospital Emergency Care

Council (PHECC) an independent statutory body who set the standards for education and

training for pre-hospital emergency care in Ireland. On completion of this course, the First

Aid Responder will be equipped with the necessary practical skills, knowledge and confi-

dence to give effective life support, diagnose and treat injuries or illness, and maintain care

and comfort of a patient who has become suddenly ill or injured in the workplace or else-

where until the arrival of emergency medical services. The First Aid Response course covers

all of the occupational first-aid requirements for places of work as outlined by the Health

and Safety Authority. Under the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work (General Application)

Regulations 2007, there is a requirement on employers, based on a risk assessment, to have

a sufficient number of adequately trained first-aiders in the workplace. The specific require-

ments for first aid provision at work depends on several factors including the size of the

workplace, the numbers employed, the hazards arising, dispersal of employees and access

to medical services.

Course Content/Topics Covered • Patient Assessment • Incident Procedures • Cardiac First

Response (CPR & AED, Choking & Stroke) • Common Medical Emergencies (Asthma, Diabe-

tes, Seizures, Poisoning & Fainting) • Injury Management & Shock (Bleeding, Bone Injuries,

Sprains, Strains & Dislocations, Shock) • Care of the Unconscious Patient • Burns & Electrical

Injury Care • Hypothermia & Hyperthermia • Information Management & Communica-

tions • The Well-Being of the First-Aid Responder

Who course for? Course Ideal for Employees of small, medium or large enterprises across

all sectors, the self-employed anyone interested in learning First Aid.

Assessment & Certification: Successful completion of the First Aid Response course leads

to joint certification by both PHECC and Order of Malta Ireland as a recognised institution.

All successful participants will receive a certificate which is valid for two years.
