EVIs: Commitment toQuality, Performance Testedto the World’s Standards

The greatest advantage to theutilization of an EVI in mediumvoltage distribution switchgearis its compact size. A vacuumdielectric allows contacts to bearranged closer together so circuit interruptions can be

designed in a smaller enve-lope. To meet IEC, ANSI andGB/JB/DL standards, EVIs aremanufactured in ISOT-9001 certified and ISO-14001 certified facilities under strictquality procedures. Each EVI is tested throughout the manufacturing process andonce again before packaging.

A dielectric withstand, as wellas a vacuum assurance test, isperformed on every interruptercreated. In addition to the test-ing process, Eaton also incor-porates a sequential bar codethat allows us to track materiallots, as well as the operatorsinvolved with building eachinterrupter in an electronic

database. The true test of ourproduct range is conducted dayafter day, year after year in thefield. With well over 3 millionEVIs in service around theworld, our customers testifythat the EVI is one of the mostcritical and reliable componentsin their end product.

Eaton Vacuum Interrupters(EVIs) Are at the Heart of the Escalating Growth in Worldwide Demand for Electricity

World demand for electricity isescalating with the use of moreefficient medium voltage powerdistribution systems. Utilitiesare pursuing higher power generation systems using fossil, nuclear, hydro and windpower to supply an increasing number of transmission net-works internationally. Networksubstations are distributingpower to a greater number ofconsumers regionally. Power consumers are insisting onenvironmentally friendly protection equipment andswitchgear compact enough to fit within their site spaceconstraints. Improving powerreliability is a growing require-ment for medium voltage protection and switching equipment manufacturers ascritical power consumption continues to grow.

At the Core of theConundrum, an IdealProtection and Switching Solution

Medium voltage power switching is one demandingapplication in today’s greenworld. Continuous current and interruption requirements continue to increase as lowerimpedance systems aredeployed. Packaging volumesand cooling capabilities continue to decrease due to site space constraints. The challenge is at the core of every switchgear, ring mainunit, pad mount unit, circuitbreaker, recloser, tap changer, contactor and switch. The idealsolution is an environmentallyfriendly medium voltage interrupter, capable of reliablyswitching high stress currentsrobustly, without the need for unreliable cooling or ventilation systems.

For Your VI Investment, Eatonhas the Answer

Eaton has combined more than100 years of global innovationand design investments made by WestinghouseT, Cutler-HammerT and HolecT to deliveran environmentally ideal VacuumInterrupter Solution for your targeted applications. EVIs areavailable in a wide range of ratings backed by a broad list of capabilities:• High ac currents and voltages• Rapid prototyping• Compact bottle volumes• Negligible erosion and wear• Dielectric encapsulation• Mechanism assistance• Custom-specific designs• Personal sales and

2 State-of-the-Art TestingFacilities to Protect YourDesign Investment

Through the use of Eaton’s two-high power test labs, a single-phase developmentlab in the U.S. and a three-phase, KEMA certified lab in Europe, Eaton is able tosystematically test newdesigns prior to certificationby the end user. Every newdesign is stringently life tested to ensure switchinglife, as well as interruptionability. Our production unitsundergo quality assurance

investment. We have kept customers coming back acrossthe life-cycle of their products for over 40 years.

A Perfect Fit for Many Applications

Eaton has the broadest productoffering in the industry with vacuum interrupters for application in:• Load break switches• Motor contactors• Circuit breakers• Reclosers• Transportation breakers• Ring main / pad mount units• Specialized dc applications• Generator breakers• Distribution circuit breakers• Medium voltage switchgear

inspections throughout everycritical aspect of the manufac-turing process. Our team of scientists and design engineers create VIs to meetour customer’s specifications, many of which push the limitsof industry standards. Someof the distinguishing designfeatures include:• Solid dielectric

encapsulation• Customer-specific

terminal designs• Features for ease

of assembly

• Custom internal and external threads

• Anti-twist bushings• Custom contact design
