Maintaining Process QC and Ingredient Control

Active pharmaceuticalingredients (API) are defined bythe US Food and DrugAdministration as substancesused singly or in a mixture toproduce a medicinal product.When used in drug production,these substances become theAPI for that product.

Catalysts, bonded to activatedcarbon as a base material, areused to expedite a reactionprocess, such as hydrogenation.The increased use of metalcatalysts such as palladium,rhodium, and rutheniumrequires containment andrecovery to meet catalyst

residue limits set by the UnitedStates Pharmacopoeia (USP)and the EuropeanPharmacopoeia (Ph. Eur.). On asecondary but equallyimportant level catalysts areexpensive, making theirrecovery and reuse a budgetconsideration as well.

Activated carbon is alsoemployed in API manufacturingto remove color, contaminants,and impurities from product viachemical adsorption. If thecarbon is used in free-powderform, the residue has to be

removed. Both methodsrequire filter solutions able tohandle high volumes of solids.

Engineering the Better Idea

Many filtration options for

catalyst and activated carbonremoval are adequate. Theymay, however, not be optimalfor your application. Among thechallenges are designs thatfeature economy but increasethe risk of filtration bypass.Some are complicated andincrease staff workload tomaintain. The choice of filtermedia can also be a concern.
