    Background

A large paint company in Indiamanufactures a wide range ofpaints for decorative andindustrial use.

Fully committed to continuousquality improvements in itsbusiness practices, the companyroutinely tracks thoseachievements with measurableprocedures. Its plants arecertified as environmentally safe.

    Challenges

In the process of meeting bothof those objectives, thecompany was recently forced toinvestigate a new way to filterimpurities from soy-based resinsused in the manufacturing ofcertain paints. Three differenttypes of impurities compoundedthe problem.

First, the dominant intruder, consisted of oversized particlesthat occur naturally in resins.Second, foreign fiber matters, which are finer than resinparticles, were also proving to

    be troublesome.

The third was the buildup ofcolloidal haze, which againoccurs naturally, and canadversely affect the quality ofthe paint.

The existing setup was highlylabor intensive requiring themanual dismantling of theequipment for cleaning.Exposure to hazardous gasesand high temperatures werealso present during cleaning. Inaddition, maintenance wasbecoming increasingly more

difficult and costly, and plantofficials believed that the agingsystem was occupying too muchfloor space. Its shabbyappearance due to years of resinspillage was also disconcertingto workers and visitors alike.

    Solution

Working with plant officials,Eaton filtration experts based inChina and India installed anEaton DCF-1600 mechanicallycleaned filter to remedy theproblems associated with thelarge particles and foreign fibers.

With two-thirds of thechallenges met, an EatonLOFDISC Module filter wasadditionally installed to removthe haze impurities and neatlyclose the loop on the system

The DCF-Series filters are ideafor highly viscous, abrasive orsticky liquids including paintDCF filters perform a self-cleaning action by mechanicalscraping collected debris fromthe filter screen with a springloaded cleaning disc that trave

down and up, wiping the medclean of concentrated solids inboth strokes. Collected debrisautomatically purged from thecollection chamber at the bottof the filter.

Based on a remarkably simpleconcept, the self-cleaning filteconsists of a cylindrical stainlesteel housing that contains afilter screen. Unfiltered liquidsenter the inlet, solids aredeposited on the interior surfaof the filtration media, andfiltered fluid exits the outlet.

Features and functionality may vary depending onselected options.

Without halting production, thisself-cleaning action provides thehighest quality filtering undercontinuous demand.

The horizontal LOFDISC Modulefilter housings are equallyeffective, just as uncomplicated, yet better suited for filtering outtiny, fine particles like thecolloidal impurities barely largerthan a standard molecule.

    Results

Officials at the paint companyreport that quality objectiveshave been met with the finishedpaints sparkle and finish betterthan ever.

But best of all, the path togetting there is less costly, safer, and more environmentallyfriendly than what wasexperienced in the past.

Financial gains are mainlyattributed to filtration timereductions and improved flowrates that roughly have gonefrom one batch (18 tons) to fourbatches a day. Significantly lessresin loss and reduced labor, disposal, and maintenance costsare bringing about additionalsavings.

Meanwhile, the manual, hazardous cleaning of filters hasbeen essentially eliminated.

As for the aesthetics a prettierpicture is certainly now beingpainted with the smallerfootprint and cleaner operationof the new Eaton filtrationsystem.

In Eatons DCF mechanically cleaned filter unit, incoming

fluids (1) are channeled from the interior cylinder through a

wire screen (2) to the outer cylinder and out the discharge

port (3). A cleaning disc (4) travels down and up inside the

cylinder to periodically clear the filter screen. Particles are

collected at the bottom of the housing where they can be

    discharged (5).
