Challenge

The development of antibioticinvolves a complex process ofchemically binding amino acidas base material to enzymes.Carbon powder is an essentiacomponent in this processand is used for adsorption ofimpurities and decolorization.After the decolorization proceis completed, a filter must beused to remove the carbonfrom the active pharmaceuticaingredient (API).

The companys old open-filter

press was leaking and difficultto handle, making the entireprocess cumbersome, inefficiand costly.

With demand for its drugcurrently showing substantialgrowth, the company wanted plug the leaks and replace theold filter press with a cleanerenclosed system that wouldimprove throughput and increcapacity, allowing a higheroutput of product.

Once the problem wasdiagnosed, the company turnedto Eaton to find a remedy. Theywere presented with EatonsBECO Integra Plate EP, acompletely enclosed filtrationsystem that guarantees muchsafer operation and easycleaning in place (CIP). Theunique design of the systemalso ensures optimalperformance and simplehandling.

With a wide variety of sizesavailable from which to choose,the drug manufacturerpurchased the BECO IntegraPlate EP equipped with a6.48 m2 filtration area and cakecapacity of 192 L. The system ishighly flexible and can expand toa filtration area of 10.26 m2 andcake capacity of 304 L.

Due to the success of thesystem, the company alsoconducted trial runs with Eatonsdepth filter sheets and ultimatelyswitched to Eatons brand.

Currently using approximately2,000 depth filter sheets peryear, the company now projectssignificant increases over thenext several years.

Eaton provides a range of depthfilter sheets, such as the KD3,which provides the companywith the same level of quality astheir old filter sheets at a moreattractive price, and the mineral-free BECOPAD 450, whichprovides improved throughput.

The company will continue touse Eatons filtration systems

and plans to replace theircurrent radium filter with asecond Integra Plate system.
