3 Introduction and thanks (sponsors and logos here)

Hello! 2012 is a very special year for the UK and here in NewcastleGateshead we want to celebrate in style. NewcastleGateshead Initiative’s EAT! and Bridges Festival will run alongside London 2012 Olympic Football at St James’ Park so the atmosphere for both locals and visitors will be electric. We hope you can join us and join in to celebrate this unique summer in NewcastleGateshead.” Carol Bell, Head of Culture and Major Events, NewcastleGateshead Initiative.

Carol Bell, Head of Culture & Major Events, NewcastleGateshead Initiative

It’s a pleasure and a privilege to be back with another invitation to join us in the kitchen, at the table and in the street. NewcastleGateshead Initiative’s annual food festival EAT! continues as the UK’s leading celebration of food culture and its success is all down to you. You’ve thrown open your doors (and your minds), you’ve chomped on chillis and partied with patissiers, you’ve grazed street food in the rain, baked a city, bussed to a beach bar and drunk us dry, dined in the dark, died for your dinner and then, then! You’ve asked for more. Well here it is, we hope you like this latest batch of food adventures and look forward to sharing the great food and drink of the North East with you.

Bon appetit pet!

eat! Launch DinnerWe’re back! - the food festival that gets everyone talking, now in our sixth

year. What makes EAT! different? We’re passionate, fun, committed,

irreverent, inspiring - and we’re open to everyone who simply enjoys good

food (and drink!): growing it, making it, eating it, drinking it! Come and help

us kick off two weeks of amazing food events.

We’ve chosen a splashy venue - the Marco Pierre White Steakhouse Bar

and Grill in Newcastle’s newest boutique hotel, Hotel Indigo - and a menu

that showcases the region’s finest, including Craster kippers, Northumbrian

lamb, Admiral Collingwood cheese, all served with the finest seasonal fruits

and vegetables. Plus there’s more: the hotel’s signature ‘Neighbourhood’

cocktail, bespoke Battle of the Beers winner Grainger Ale, free copies of

Marco’s latest book, secret ‘treats’ and live music from The Paul James

Band. The evening will be fun, cool, glamorous - definitely the place to be.

Be NewcastleGateshead’s Coolest Drinking Den.

A place where alcohol is appreciated rather than merely drunk, where you’ll discover insider secrets - mix

the perfect cocktail, sniff out the finest rum - where the conversation flows and the vibe is laidback. Plus there’s always background action - join in or just watch - that will make everyone else wish they’d been here.

‘Up on the Bridge, that’s not a bridge, the water has slowed to a T in a fashion that’ll make you

want to try something on to get in.’

Solve this riddle, then find the hidden door... One more thing, club members must keep the location secret; be cool, be silent.

SPEAKEASY LATE LAUnch

PArTY

Things are not quite what they seem, tonight. We’re back in Prohibition times, when drinking was undercover and spies lurked everywhere.

Slip in the secret door and watch the region’s finest barmen, from Popolo, Hotel du Vin and Six at BAlTIC (and all heavily disguised), perform and share the secrets of their amazing cocktails. Sip them out of teacups (you don’t want to get caught) and chill out to a DJ paying electro-swing. look out for the photographer... And a few surprises. Feel free to dress up!

WhEn: Fri 13 July, 9pm - 1am TicKETS: £15 inc a cocktail

Kentucky DerbyThis year is the 150th anniversary of The Blaydon Races song, the Geordie national anthem. Another famous horse race, the Kentucky Derby, a nail-biting gallop around a louisville dirt-track, began not much later.

Tonight we celebrate both. Enjoy a classic mint julep followed by a North East version of the traditional Kentucky Derby burgoo stew. Then lay your bets in our sweepstake (Bourbon for winners!) and hold onto your hats for the ‘fastest two minutes in sport’ as re-runs of the Derby are shown. American cocktails plus a Blaydon Race cocktail, add to a fine evening of Kentucky-Blaydon showmanship.

Fancy dress optional, prizes for winners.

WhEn: Sat 14 July, 8pm TicKETS: £18 inc a Mint Julep cocktail and Burgoo Pie.

SPEAKEASY MASTErcLASSES

Ever wondered how to

make a classic rum Mojito? Or if there’s more to Tequila than a Margarita? Here’s your chance to find out. Join one of our Masterclasses and learn from the experts – including Wayne Collins from TV’s Something For The Weekend.

Sipping your welcome cocktail, you’ll watch classic drinks being mixed, find out how they were invented - taste them, obviously - and pick up insider tips on how and when to serve them. Taste and learn. We can’t think of anything nicer.

WhEn: Bourbon - Sat 14 July Tequila - Mon 16 July Classics with Wayne Collins - Tues 17 July Rum - Weds 18 July All at 6pm and 8.30pm except Bourbon, 2pm onlyTicKETS: £15 inc cocktail tasting except classics £20

Drink-a-Long MoviesThis is the Speakeasy way of wine-tasting (and cocktail-tasting). Watch one of these classic films and enjoy the same (or nearly the same) drinks as they’re enjoying on the big screen. Plus gourmet pies and popcorn (natch) to accompany.

Cut a swathe through Californian vineyards as you follow the tragi-comic fortunes of the cast of ‘Sideways’. Join Bogart and Bergman, and a cast of classic cocktails, in the ravishingly romantic ‘Casablanca’; 1940s–style dress encouraged.

WhEn: Sideways - Fri 20 July 6pm and 9pm Casablanca - Sat 21 July 6pm and 9pmTicKETS: £22.50 inc movie and six drinks tastings a gourmet pie and ice cream.

Secret PaladaresOnce again, we’re going to take you on an adventure. This is the fourth year we’ve opened hush-hush restaurants in top-secret locations around NewcastleGateshead, and you won’t know where you’re going until the last minute. Based on Cuban Paladares, where families secretly open their homes to diners, you’ll experience the traditional ethnic dishes, and hospitality, of these wonderful home-chefs. Home cooking at its best. BUT this is a hugely popular event so you will need to book fast! Check the EAT! website for details.

Secret Paladares – The Sunday Supplement Sunday lunch - that great British tradition. What do you do? Get Dad to do the washing up? Kick off with a bracing walk to your family’s ‘special secret place’? Collapse in giggles afterwards watching your favourite comedy classic? Or cheat outrageously at cards? Ever wondered what others do? Here’s your chance to find out. We’ve invited keen cooks to open their homes and share their own traditional Sunday meal - the food, the recipes, the pre- and post-meal traditions - with others. To add to the fun, you won’t know where you’re going until the day. Check the EAT! website for details.

Inspired by the super-talented amateur chefs we’ve come across, we’ve created this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for them to taste the professional chef’s life. A series of knock-out rounds will produce three finalists whose task is to be ‘Head Chef’ for a day at Blackfriars Restaurant. In charge of the menu, the cooking, the kitchen team and the service, each night the work of one finalist will be assessed by professional judges and you, the diners.

A live TV hook-up to the kitchen means you can see, and feel, the heat of the action as each contestant prepares their own menu on a ‘Blackfriars - A Taste of the Past’ theme. As you eat the results, your comments and judgements will count just like those of the professional judges.

enter the world of Fawlty Towers with this five-star, internationally-acclaimed show. Touring 15 countries in this, its 15th birthday year, the critically acclaimed show that’s been winning five-star reviews and standing ovations since 1997 now comes to Newcastle as part of eaT! NewcastleGateshead.

Faulty Towers The Dining Experience is a pitch perfect tribute to Fawlty Towers that features all the best gags and a three-course meal. The fun starts as you wait to be seated and then hurtles along for two hours as the audience takes the role of diners while Sybil, Basil and Manuel aspire to be their warring waiters… This show is interactive to the core and relies on an original script for just a third of the show: the rest is improvised by experts, so it’s fresh every time.

‘EAT yOur HEArT OuT’ by Chloe Daykin

This funny and surprising new play was inspired by Chloe’s visit to EAT! NewcastleGateshead in 2011. A section of it is being presented as a work-in-progress by Northern Stage as part of their resident scratch night, First in Three. Anna loves food and is fascinated by ingredients’ relationships with each other – do salt and vinegar really get on so well? After suddenly giving a voice to the thoughts of an angry onion in Waitrose, she believes she is a medium and that food is communicating through her to reveal its true feelings. When the food says what it wants, when it wants, things get a bit tricky... Can Anna’s relationship survive these constant disruptions? Find out how her story begins and then share your thoughts, opinions and feedback. Other scratch performances will also be presented.
