    BASIC INTRODUCTION

The key to functional exercise is integration. Itsabout teaching all the muscles to work togetherrather than isolating them to work independently.(Roskopf, 2005)

Functional training is training that stimulates our bodiesto move the way they are naturally engineered. The

primary advantage of the Freestyler is that it allowsexercising while using natural, three dimensional andfunctional multiaxis movements.

Everyday natural motion demands movement in alldirections. The exercises that force us to make simplemovements are less effective and less useful. Insingle-axis movements certain muscles may becomestrong but there is a lack of coordination.

The Freestyler was designed by experts from the fieldof sports training, who know what, how much, when, and with what means it is necessary to train in order

to achieve desired results in the shortest possible timespan. Because this device enables completely freeand natural movements on all levels, we named it theFreestyler.

By making use of flexible elastic tubes, the Freestyleroffers resistance when performing exercises which arespecific for the function of a specific joint. Due to thisfact, the muscles surrounding the joint gain strengthfaster and, at the same time, coordination and jointfunction are improved.

    5

In everyday life it is important to gradually incorporateindividual muscles and muscle fibers (individualmuscle parts) into a movement or movements

    (coordination).

When performing a specific movement, the wholebody enters into action; certain muscles stabilize thebodys position in order to enable other muscles toperform the movement.

Our bodies work like a well-tuned orchestra. Every cellof the body performs its own function well in order toachieve coordinated, easy and beautiful movements. When treating injured joints, muscles and nerves, wemake use of this very neurophysiologic property ofa healthy body (irradiation) in order to improve the

function of a specific joint. Here is where three-axismovement against resistance offers a substantialadvantage.

Freestyler is a very efficient device with carefullyplanned exercise programs for muscle strengthening,

improvement of coordination and balance as well asfor facilitating patients efficient return to everydayactivities.

Elastic tubes offer the patient resistance, simulatinga therapists hands. Due to the flexible hyperboloidrollers, resistance can be of various intensities.

Depending on the patients position, the elastic tubesoffer resistance in different directions, enabling thestrengthening of various muscle groups. Similarly, the resistance can be accurately adjusted by usingseven different elastic tube strengths.

    STRUCTURE OF THE FREESTYLERTM

    FUNCTIONAL REHABILITATION SYSTEM

The FREESTYLERTM FUNCTIONAL REHAB SYSTEMoffers a great opportunity for complete, step bystep rehabilitation programs. To optimally adjust theexercise level to your injury, the programs have beendivided into two levels.

LIMITED MOBILITYThis is the introductory level, for patients with limited

joint mobility, decreased muscle strength andcoordination, who still feel pain or discomfort whenperforming everyday tasks.

FULL MOBILITYThe advanced level is for patients with functionalmobility but less than optimal muscle strength, coordination and balance. For easier understanding, exercises are divided into

three groups: increasing joint mobility, improving muscle strength, coordination & balance, stretching.

The exercises are described in various positions: supine & prone, sitting, kneeling &half kneeling, on all fours, standing.

    7

    THEORY BEHIND THE EXERCISE STRUCTURE

FLEXIBILITYIn order to achieve normal joint flexibility, the jointmust be intact and in a correct position. In addition, the joint must contain enough synovial fluid, whichenables the physiological gliding of articular surfaces.Injuries, long periods of rest, surgeries, hemorrhages, reduced perfusion and the like usually cause a re-

duced range of motion. Thus, it is essential to attain anormal range of motion before muscle strengtheningbegins. Ones own body weight is used to increaseflexibility.

MUSCLE STRENGTHENINGThis is the most important part of the exercise program.Stronger muscles provide support for the injured area, cushioning it against the jars and jolts of ordinary life. This doesnt sound that important, but it turns out to bethe single most effective part of a successful exercisetreatment program.

The most common problem when patients performexercises on their own is inaccuracy. The movementsare not performed in the entire range of motion. Thisleads to imbalance and unstable joints which furtherincreases the risk of repeated injuries. Thus, whenperforming exercises one needs to pay attention and

be accurate. Most exercises are created accordingto the basic principles of PNF (proprioceptive neu-romuscular facilitation). Strengthening exercises arebest performed every other day, or three times perweek.

    8

PNF STRETCHINGThere are many ways of stretching. Currently, PNFstretching is the fastest and most effective way of

muscle stretching that increases the range of motionof the joints. PNF is a combination of active (isometric)and passive muscle work with the aim of attaining themaximal possible muscle flexibility.

This technique is usually carried out with the help of

another person; however, the patients own bodyweight can help.

In stretching, the hold-relax PNF technique isemployed. The patient first contracts the muscles thatare to be stretched, holds this position for 10 secondsand then relaxes and stretches the muscles. The

stretched position should be held for 10 seconds.

WARNING: PNF stretching is not recommended forchildren and adolescents who are still in the growingphase because they usually possess enough naturalflexibility. The additional stretching may injure their

tendons and ligaments. The exercises should only beperformed once a day! Rest for 20 seconds betweenindividual stretchings.

WHO CAN BENEFIT FROM THE FREESTYLERFUNCTIONAL REHABILITATION SYSTEM?

    PROFESSIONAL PHYSIOTHERAPISTS

PROFESSIONAL PHYSIOTHERAPISTS can use theFREESTYLERTM as a part of their daily routines,

implementing various exercises into existingprograms, or combining it with other equipment.

The FREESTYLERTM research & development teampresents rehabilitation programs on this three DVD set, which firstly develops passive flexibility in the joint,

then progresses to exercises that strengthen impairedmuscles and develop coordination and balance.

The program is concluded with PNF stretchingexercises in order to keep the muscles flexible andrelaxed.

The FREESTYLERTMis a great addition to ones reha-

bilitation process, as it helps to strengthen muscles, develop coordination and balance and improverange of motion.

    FOLLOW THESE SAFETY GUIDELINES:

With each new workout programme start carefullyand gradually increase intensity. Intensity is increasedwith a stronger elastic or a larger amplitude ofmovement. Exercise regularly (continually), do not miss/skipworkouts. Pay special attention to protecting the spine and

the lower back (the lumbar area),maintain a natural spinal curve and follow theinstructions for individual exercises. Always work out as unburdened and relaxed aspossible. Do not consume any heavy

food approximately two hours before workout. Develop a correct technique of lifting - lift with astraight back so that the main part of

the lifting is done by the legs. Watch out for correct hydration of the organism, always have something to drink. Watch out for appropriate footwear because everymovement derives/originates from the feet.

ALWAYS AVOID THE FOLLOWING: do not work out too intensively in hot and humidconditions, never hold your breath during workout, do not hyperventilate during workout or rest, never work out if you feel pain, never work out if you are ill or injured, do not perform exercises that are to hard ordangerous for you, do not sacrifice quality of the workout on accountof quantity.

    7. Institutional rehabilitation can be concluded earliersince the patient can continue with the workout athome on the basis of acquired knowledge and with

the assistance of home use programs on DVDs.

    8. The physiotherapist can work with the patient onthe FREESTYLERTM in the rehab center or use theFreestyler as a prescribed workout method for aworkout at home (further re-sale).

    9. It is more likely that the patient will return to therehab center since the physiotherapist can preparenew workout programs which can be performed bythe patient in the comfort of his home. The client isprovided with continuous, interesting and dynamicworkouts and the control of his recovery and progress

    by the physiotherapist.

    10. Large choice of exercises for physiotherapistspresented on DVDs, which include a cleardemonstration of the usage of PNF patterns on theFREESTYLERTM. The system provides a creative

upgrade and countless possibilities of combining thedevice with other rehab equipment.11. Rich theoretical background of concepts inte-grated into the FREESTYLERTMrehab system.

    12. Constant technical, theoretical and consulting

    service.

    12

    13. Optimal elongation range: elastic resistance offersincreasing force with elongation. All elastic productshave characteristic force elongation curves, which

are typically three phased. The first phase is markedby an exponential increase in the first 25 % elongation.Next, there is a linear increase between 25 % and500 % and finally a sharp exponential increase untilfailure.

Therefore, it is recommended that exercise is performedbetween 25 % and 250 % elongation and resistance in-creased by progressing to the next tubing strength rath-er than increasing the stretch on the tubing.

The FREESTYLERTM solves this problem at its root.

Its unique system of hyperboloid rollers distributesforce evenly which enables all the exercises onthe FREESTYLERTM to be performed in the optimalelongation range.

FOR USE AT HOME AFTER AN INJURY

We also recommend the FREESTYLERTM functionalrehabilitation system for HOME USE. Exercises can beexecuted during the official rehabilitation process orafter institutionalised rehabilitation treatment undersupervision of a physiotherapist or a physician.

The FREESTYLERTM functional rehab system can

be used by anyone who completed institutionalizedrehabilitation and feels that his arm, leg or anotherbody part is not yet in a pre-injury functional state.

Of course you may perform these exercises duringyour official rehabilitation. However, it is important tobe aware of what you may not do (e.g. full weight-bearing of your hip, knee or anklecontraindicationsthat are listed by your doctor). It is also important thatexercises are not performed at least 4 weeks afterpotential surgery (acute stage).

It is of great importance to maintain the health and

functionality of our body with strong and flexiblejoints, fascias, ligaments and muscles.

FREESTYLERTM rehabilitation programs can also beused to prevent degenerative processes (osteoporo-sis, arthritis etc.).

    15

We also recommend FREESTYLERTM FUNCTIONALREHAB for:

ATHLETES(SPORT RELATED INJURIES)For the majority of sports injuries, exercise is a vitalpart of the rehabilitation process. The idea thatan athlete is completely cured once treatment isover is simply outdated. Instead, an important partof an athletes physiotherapy consists of specific

strengthening and flexibility exercises. Exercisesincluded in rehabilitation programs ensure that theinjured part returns to a fully functional state and/orthat the original cause of injury is eliminated.

For example, an athlete recovering from a hamstring strain would

need to stretch and strengthen the injured hamstring to ensure that

flexibility and strength are equal on both the injured and the non-injured side.

SENIORS(STRENGTHENING AND PREVENTION OF FALLS)Unfortunately, aging negatively affects every param-eter of muscle-skeletal functionality. Moreover, a de-crease in strength, endurance, muscular and bonemass is almost always directly related to the numberof falls an individual experiences. For individuals in theolder population, an everyday occurrence such as afall can often be fatal. Each year approximately 30%of people older than 65 fall and injure themselves.

Among them, 20% to 30% will never be able towalk again. Both strength and aerobic capacitiesimprove after a few weeks of regular and organizedexercising.

    CHECK LIST

    1. TUBE SELECTIONWhen selecting tube resistance level, bear in mindthat you can choose from 7 tubes. Because there aremany different injuries, which can also be in differ-ent stages of rehabilitation, the appropriate strengthis chosen according to your or your physiotherapists

    estimate of your functional abilities.

When you feel confident and you are able to do ex-ercises with apparent ease, it is time to move to thenext tube level. It is important to progress to strongertubes in order to gain strength and give your musclesthe stimulus they need to fully recover from an injury.

    2. ADJUSTMENTS(tubes - board, tubes - cuffs - handles, starting positions)Before you start the workout you need to properly ad-just both tubes: the handles should be on the outerend of the tube and the cuffs on the inner end.

The cuffs are placed above and around the ankleand not fastened too tight.

The handles have a mechanism for length adjustment. To check the proper length stand hips apart with 10 to20 cm abducted arms. By doing so, the tubes must beprestretched. If loose, shorten the strap on the han-dles, or if too stretched, lengthen the strap.

    21

    WHAT IS PNF?

PNF is a way of thinking, observing and moving. When making use of the PNF concept, we becomemore aware of our body and its movements. PNFis simply a harmony of knowledge, awareness andmovement.

The most important addition to the existing PNF

knowledge base is the unique transfer of PNF pat-terns performed by the physiotherapist to the PNFpatterns performed with elastic resistance on theFREESTYLERTM(read more on page 51).

THE NAMEThe name of the concept reveals what part of thehuman body is being used in the treatment.

P - stands for proprioceptor (a receptor that perceivesthe changes in the human body) via which the mus-

cular contraction is stimulated. The main receptorsused in PNF treatments are in the muscles (the musclespindle and free nerve endings), in the tendons (theGolgi tendon organ) and joints (Vater-Pacini corpus-cles, Ruffini corpuscles and free nerve endings).

    Beside proprioceptors, exteroceptors are also

employed (receptors perceiving changes in skin, eyes and ears). By using basic PNF principles, proprioceptors and exteroceptors may be activatedto either contract a muscle or muscles or to relaxthem.

    21

  • 7/30/2019 Easy Pnf Dvd Brochure

    22/48

    22

N - stands for a neuromuscular link and symbolizesa motor unit. In treatments we strive to engage anoptimal number of motor units (neuro-muscular

links) in order to enable a movement that is light, coordinated, accurate, strong, etc.

F- Facilitation means that the input received by themotor cell in the spinal cord, which receives impulsesfrom the brain and the spinal cord, is big enough andoriginates from different directions to enable optimalmuscle activity.

    HISTORICAL PERSPECTIVES

    Proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation (PNF) was

developed in the late 1940s. It was initially used intreatment of children with infantile paralysis, butlater its use spread to patients with various ailments(orthopedic, trauma, neurological etc.).

The pioneers were Dr. Herman Kabat, MD and aphysical therapist, Ms. Margaret Knott. They aimedat developing a treatment method based on theneurophysiologic research of the physiologist CharlesSherrington.

PNF is a philosophy of healing. The core of thephilosophy is that all human beings, including the sick,

have unused potential for healing and improvement(Kabat 1950). The entire body is incorporated into thetreatment.

    22

  • 7/30/2019 Easy Pnf Dvd Brochure

    23/48

    23

First, exercises are performed based on what thepatient is able to do; the stronger body parts areused to support the strengthening of the weaker parts

(irradiation). A normal motor development is followed, paying attention not to cause pain to the patient.By using adequate resistance and employingdifferent techniques we can stimulate various types ofmuscle activity: dynamic (concentric and eccentric)

and static (isometric). One of the more importantprinciples is treating the patient in function since theentire body is active that way. Resistance is appliedfor two reasons.

First of all, muscles are strengthened; secondly, thesensory input is increased by increasingly engaging

the motor units, making the patient more aware ofthe movement.

By using the PNF technique, effective and coordinatedmovements in patterns are stimulated. The movementis three-axial, diagonal-spiral.

  • 7/30/2019 Easy Pnf Dvd Brochure

    24/48

    24

    MOVEMENT PATTERNS

Healthy individuals in everyday life move diagonally(spirally diagonally). This is especially visible in caseof athletes, who wish to develop the greatest possi-ble strength, velocity, endurance and explosiveness. The movement runs in the same direction in whichthe muscle fibers are positioned in a muscle. Thereare two body diagonals in the human body (from the

shoulder girdle to the contralateral hip joint). A par-allel of another body diagonal also runs through theshoulder girdle. Thus, in every proximal joint there arefour basic movement patterns. Rotation is the small-est and most important of all movements because itresults in the best muscle stretching and stability asrotators are short muscles. Rotators make the musclesof a joint move in a diagonal.

The above figure shows the directions of movement indiagonals: upwards and to the side/downwards and inward, upwards and inward/downwards and to the side.

    24

    25/48

    25

    IRRADIATION

Irradiation represents a multitude of stimuli. Thehuman body is constantly working; when one partis activated, for instance an arm, the trunk is alsoactive. When more strength is required, other parts ofthe body gradually enter into action as well.

The practical application of irradiation in therapy

is that irradiation can be anticipated; thus, usingdifferent positions and different movement patternswhich run diagonally, the activity of the weaker ormore distal parts of the body can be stimulated.Irradiation can be primarily induced through staticmuscular contraction, as a response to adequateresistance.

In addition to involving the motor cell of the affectedmuscle or the kinetic chain, the sensory influencediffusely spreads to the entire trunk. This effect canspread in a diagonal of the movement in the samemuscle chain.

The most potent response is usually obtained in thediagonal of movement in the opposite direction;however, the response can change based onthe patients position, body type, strength or thedistribution of strength in the body.

    25

  • 7/30/2019 Easy Pnf Dvd Brochure

    26/48

    26

When the phenomenon of irradiation is anticipated, conditions must be set for the patient to be able topush away from the ground or pull towards it.

In therapy, irradiation is successfully used for the pur-pose of improving functional problems. In order tocorrectly understand irradiation one must understandthat it spreads via the neuromuscular system and thatit is primarily a response to stimulation with resistance.

Its aim is to trigger certain activities by entering mo-tor synergists (helpers) into action. It can more easilydevelop with the help of stronger body parts and canencompass any other body part.

For instance, scapular and/or pelvic movements arepresent at all times when we turn around, get up,

walk, put our shoes on, comb our hair, get dressed...These patterns can be observed in everyday life, insports, dancing, etc.

SINGLE JOINT EMPHASIS IN PNF PATTERNS

With the FREESTYLERTM we emphasize the singlejoint. When performing movements in a pattern, apart of the movement may fall out and the patternis no longer carried out correctly. In such a case, single joint emphasis is used and the strong musclesin certain patterns are used to support the activity ofthe weak muscles.

    26

  • 7/30/2019 Easy Pnf Dvd Brochure

    27/48

    27

Example: as soon as we grasp the handle of theelastic tube, the rest of the arm muscles contract aswell, ready to perform a movement. If you suffered an

upper arm fracture and thus have a hard time raisingyour arm, try the following two maneuvers:

    1. Let go of the elastic band and raise your arm.

    2. Clench your hand into a fist or extend your fingers

and wrist, and raise your arm. You will see for yourselfthat the second maneuver is more effective becausethe strong muscles of the fingers and wrist support theactivity of the weak muscles in the area of the healedfracture. The aim of the single joint emphasis is tostrengthen the part of the movement that is weakerin a pattern.

In single joint emphasis we differentiate:

    1. The pivot/fulcrum(movable joint - the weak component of the pattern)

    2. The stable part (the adjacent two joints - the strongcomponents of the pattern)

Usually the pattern is selected in the middle range sothat the patient can follow the movement visually aswell (the spatial summation of the stimuli).

    LEG REHABILITATION

    THE ANKLE

The ankle is a composite joint and one of the mostimportant joints in the body. If all the physiologicalfunctions of the joint are retained, ones own weight-bearing load is appropriate and the weight is evenly

distributed across the entire sole surface duringmovement. Thus, weight - bearing is also appropriatein the joints of the knee, hip, vertebrae; individual

joints or their parts do not suffer excessive weight-bearing and consequently there are no changes ofarticular surfaces, pain or reduced function.

The ankle muscles must be evenly strong and well-coordinated for they bear the weight of the entirebody on a relatively tiny surface area.

The movements in a healthy ankle: flexion with eversion,

flexion with inversion. extension with eversion, extension with inversion.

The most common ankle problems are sprains andfractures. A sprain is an injury to the ligaments. It may

take a few weeks or many months to heal completely.A fracture is a break in a bone. You can also injure otherparts of the ankle such as tendons, which join muscleswith the bone, and cartilage, which cushions your joints.

    THE KNEE

The knee is the largest joint in the body, and one ofthe most easily injured. It is made up of the lowerend of the thighbone (femur), which rotates on theupper end of the shinbone (tibia), and the knee cap(patella), which slides in a groove on the end of thefemur.

The knee also contains large ligaments, which helpcontrol motion by connecting bones and by bracingthe joint against abnormal types of motion.

Another important structure, the meniscus, is a wedgeof soft cartilage between the femur and tibia thatserves to cushion the knee and helps it absorb shockduring motion.

A healthy joint enables the following movements:

flexion with internal rotation, flexion with external rotation,

extension with internal rotation, extension with external rotation.

Many athletes experience injuries to their kneeligaments. Of the four major ligaments found in theknee, the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) and themedial collateral ligament (MCL) are often injuredin sports. The posterior cruciate ligament (PCL) mayalso be injured.

    30

    THE HIP

The hip joint is a spheroidal joint. The bottom of thecup-like acetabulum is filled by tender connectivetissue and fat tissue. This tissue functions as a bufferand carries the vibration from the head of the thighbone to the acetabulum of the hip.

The flexibility of the hip joint is diminished on account

of firmness and balance. The centre of gravity of thebody is perpendicular to the horizontal rotation axispassing the hip joints approximately in the height ofthe third sacral vertebra.

The pelvis turns around the axis as a pointer on aweighing machine. Almost all changes in the positionof lower limbs are supplemented by simultaneousmovement of the pelvis and the spine.

Due to its structure, the hip usually supports heavyweight - bearing and tends to wear out faster, oftennecessitating total joint replacement.

    Movements: flexion,extension, internal rotation,external rotation, adduction,abduction.

    31

    ARM REHABILITATION

SHOULDER GIRDLEThe shoulder girdle consists of the clavicle(collarbone) and the scapula (shoulder blade) thatconnect to a joint. The shoulder girdle is attached tothe skeleton of the trunk only through the clavicular

joint which importantly contributes to mobility in

    many directions.

The arm is attached to the shoulder girdle so that it isslightly moved away from the trunk thus having morefreedom in movement. The socket of the scapulameets the head of the humerus in a spheroidal joint

(ball and socket joint). The shoulder joint is thus themost flexible joint in the body.

When all the parts described above work in acoordinated fashion, the following movements areenabled: r

aising of the arm (flexion), extension of the arm (behind the back), internal and external rotation, adduction, abduction, horizontal adduction and abduction.

Shoulder injuries are frequently caused by athleticactivities that involve excessive, repetitive, overheadmotion, such as swimming, tennis, pitching, andweightlifting. Injuries can also occur during everydayactivities such washing walls, hanging curtains, andgardening.

  • 7/30/2019 Easy Pnf Dvd Brochure

    32/48

    32

In shoulder injuries the first manifestation is usuallya substantially reduced range of motion and themuscle strength of both rotations. Thus, rehabilitation

therapy should focus on rotations. Rotators offerstability to the joint and in its absence, the function ofother movements is worsened as well.

Most problems in the shoulder involve the muscles, ligaments, and tendons, rather than the bones.

Athletes are especially susceptible to shoulderproblems. In case of athletes, shoulder problems candevelop slowly through repetitive, intensive trainingroutines.

Some people will have a tendency to ignore thepain and play through a shoulder injury, which

only aggravates the condition, and may cause moreproblems. People also may underestimate the extentof their injury because steady pain, weakness in thearm, or limitation of joint motion will become almostsecond nature to them.

    THE ELBOW

Your elbow joint is made up of bone, cartilage, ligaments and fluid. Muscles and tendons help theelbow joint move. When any of these structures is hurtor diseased, you have elbow problems.

A hinge joint, composed of three bones (the upperarm (humerus) and the lower arm, which is composed

of two bones). It supports movements in a single axis: flexion o

f the elbow, flexion of the elbow with supination, flexion of the elbow with pronation, extension of the elbow, extension of the elbow with supination, extension of the elbow with pronation.

A normal elbow function is a precondition for well-coordinated arm movements. In upper arm or lowerarm injuries or after long periods of immobilization(plaster), pronation or supination, which are essentialfor coordinated movements, are usually limited along

    with flexion and extension.

An acute injury may be caused by a direct blow, penetrating injury, or fall; or by twisting, jerking,

jamming, or bending an elbow abnormally. Pain maybe sudden and severe. Acute injuries include bruises, sprains, fractures, dislocations, ligament injuries...

Overuse injuries occur when too much stress is placedon a joint or other tissue, often by overdoing anactivity or through repetition of an activity. Overuseinjuries include bursitis, tennis and golfers elbow...

    THE WRIST

Your wrist is made up of eight small bones known ascarpals. They support a tube that runs through yourwrist. That tube, called the carpal tunnel, has tendonsand a nerve inside. It is covered by a ligament, whichholds it in place.

The bones of the wrist are turned to the arm and

connect in an ellipsoid head of the joint. The palmis directly connected to the radius. This is why theotherwise stronger radius is injured more often thanthe ulna.

The wrist joint is a universal joint, enabling movementsin practically all directions. This characteristic enablesexecution of activities that require utmost precision.

It is composed of eight wrist bones, distributed in tworows, and the lower arm which is composed of twobones.

A healthy joint enables the following movements: flexion, extension, radial deviation

(deviation in the thumbs direction), ulnar deviation

(deviation in the little fingers direction), pronation (palm facing down), supination (palm facing up).

    35

Wrist pain is common. Repetitive motion can damageyour wrist. Everyday activities like typing, racquetsports or sewing can cause pain, or even carpal

tunnel syndrome. Wrist pain with bruising and swellingcan be a sign of injury. The signs of a potentialfracture include misshapen joints and inability tomove your wrist. Some wrist fractures are a result ofosteoporosis.

    SPINE REHABILITATION

The vertebral column (i.e. the spine) is composed of7 cervical, 12 thoracic, 5 lumbar, 5 sacral vertebraeand the coccyx. The spine enables an upright postureand offers protection for the spinal cord which runs inthe spinal canal, composed of vertebrae.

A healthy spine enables the following movements: flexion/extension, lateral flexion (left/right), rotations.

In injuries of the spine we strive to achievephysiological motion and flexibility as well as musclestrength along the entire spine.

The following should be kept in mind: a reducedrange of motion in one segment leads to a reducedfunction thereof.

    35

  • 7/30/2019 Easy Pnf Dvd Brochure

    36/48

    36

However, in order to be able to live normally andhandle everyday chores, the range of motion in othersegments is compensatingly increased which leads

to overbearing in these segments and consequentlyto faster development of degenerative changes inthese segments as well. Furthermore, new and moreexcruciating pains develop and the function is re-duced.

The physiological flexibility is enabled by the struc-ture of our joints, the form of the bones and articularsurfaces, the length and flexibility of the joint capsuleand the joint ligaments as well as the flexibility andstrength of the muscles that surround the joint.

That is the reason why exercises are not divided

into the cervical, thoracic, lumbar and sacral part. However, certain rules do apply: when working witharms flexed, the thoracic part of the spine is moreaffected; when working with arms extended, thefocus is on the lumbar part.

In injuries of the cervical and thoracic spine attentionshould be given also to the shoulder girdle and theentire spine, while in injuries of the lumbar or sacralspine, exercises for the hips should supplementexercises for the spine.

    FUNCTIONAL DYN

    A

    MICSTM TECHNIQUE

THREE DIMENSIONAL NATURAL AND FUNCTIONALMULTI AXIS MOVEMENTSEveryday natural motion demands movement in alldirections. Exercises that force us to make one-joint single-axis movements are simply less effective and less usefuland can sometimes cause stress on involved joints. Themain feature oftheFREESTYLERTMare natural & functional

    multiaxis movements.

DIFFERENT TYPES OF MUSCULAR CONTRACTIONAn advantageous characteristic of elastic resistances is thebalance between different ways of exercising (concentric, eccentric, isometric).

SYNCHRONIZED WHOLE BODY WORKOUTSThe key to functional exercise is integration. Its aboutteaching all the muscles to work together rather thanisolating them to work independently.

CONTINUOUS EXERCISE FLOW (BODY FLOW)The way elastic tubes are attached allows continuous

exercise flow. It means you can progress from one exerciseto another with fluid transitions between exercises whichassures continuous workout intensity.

ASSURED MUSCLE BALANCEAll the workouts are developed in a way which assuresbalanced muscle strength in the lateral plane, agonist antagonist muscle (muscle on the opposite side of the joint)and also a balance between upper and lower parts of thebody.

    39

MAXIMUM RANGE OF MOTIONFREESTYLERTM allows you to achieve maximal muscleactivation and greater strength gains through movements

executed in a full range of motion.

CORE STABILITYThe aim of core stability training is to effectively recruit thetrunk musculature and then learn to control the positionof the lumbar spine during dynamic movements. Thesecharacteristics underpin the deep-trunk muscle training in

    all of theFREESTYLERTMgroup workout programs.

PROPRIOCEPTIVE WORKOUTProprioceptive workouts currently play an important rolein prevention of injuries (especially of the ankle, kneeand shoulder joints), and in the improvement of strength, static of the backbone and quality of movement control in

    general.

BASIC TRAINING PRINCIPLESThe principles of training derive from knowledge of thehuman body and its reactions to the functioning of theskeletal muscles. The seven sacred workout principlesalways have to be taken into account. These principles

are incorporated in all workout programs: overload, regeneration, specificity, adaptation, individuality, periodisation and planning principle.

VISUALIZATION TECHNIQUESVisualization techniques are incorporated into everyworkout program, because they give the physiotherapist a

supreme methodical tool for enhancing a clients techniqueand sketching out the workout sequence.

    BENEFITS OF THE FREESTYLERTM

ELASTIC RESISTANCE WITH NO INERTIAThe adverse effect of inertia is caused by the forces thatresult when a heavy weight changes direction or speedduring an exercise movement. Not only does the adverseeffect of inertia reduce workout benefits, inertia problemsare also responsible for many weightlifting injuries. Becauseof this property (no inertia), elastic bands have proven suc-cessful in rehabilitation of sportsmen with a whole spectrum

of different injuries, especially those of the shoulder, kneeand elbow joints.

SIMPLE, SAFE AND EFFICIENT ROUTINESRather than developing a complex routine, a complexexecution of the movement is aimed at. This results in bettercontrol of the motion, better concentration and precision;it eliminates confusion and increases satisfaction with theworkout. This spurred us to create a system which enablessimple and safe movements and still allows an effectivecalorie burn and good exercise benefits.

ENDLESS EXERCISE AND FUTURE WORKOUT POSSIBILITIESAccording to the specific adaptations to imposed demands(S.A.I.D.) principle, the body adapts over time to thedemands imposed on it. Therefore it is a must to continuallychallenge the body and deliver results.TheFREESTYLERTM

development team is also preparing additional workouts toadd to existing ones, to even further meet specific clientdemands.

    41

INCREASED MUSCULAR INERVATIONThe use of elastic resistance enables a slow and controlledexecution of exercises. Multi-axis movements employ not

only prime movers but also a whole set of supporting musclegroups, which all adds to increased muscle inervation.

ENABLED PROGRESSIVE RESISTANCEThe quantity of force can easily be adjusted accordingto the capabilities of an individual. This is achieved with iseven pairs of elastic bands of different strength. Progressive

resistance is one of the most important rules in any physicalactivity and is defined as a strength training modality inwhich the overload is constantly increased to facilitateadaptation. Without this there would be no progress.

INCREASED PERIPHERAL BLOOD FLOWis a cardiovascular response to Freestyler programs. The

FREESTYLERTMoffers unique resistance on all four limbswhich in effect promotes increased peripheral blood flow. This effect is further increased with thoughtful exercisesequences which force muscles to pump blood intodifferent parts of the body, promoting better cardiovasculartraining.

OPTIMAL ELONGATION RANGEAll elastic products have characteristic force elongationcurves. It is recommended that exercises are performedbetween 25 % and 250 % elongation and resistanceincreased by progressing to the next tubing strength ratherthan increasing the stretch on the tubing. The Freestylerdevice solves this problem at its root. Its unique system of

hyperboloid rollers distributes force evenly which enables allexercises on the FREESTYLERTMdevice to be performedin the optimal elongation range.

    PREVIEW OF THEEASY PNFTM SYSTEM

A team of physiotherapists and internationallyrecognized lecturers and other experts from the fieldof physiotherapy and sport training has been workingintensely for over three years to create EASY PNFTMwith the intention to make the PNF technique morewidely used and more easy to implement.

The most important addition to the existing PNFknowledge base is the unique transfer of PNFpatterns performed by the physiotherapist to the PNFpatterns performed with elastic resistance on theFREESTYLERTM.

The EASY PNFTM system uses a clear and logical over-

view of PNF patterns, single joint emphasis and modi-fications (bilateral, symmetric, reciprocal...), withvivid explanations of all movement components andmore.

With the learning of patterns from easy to morecomplex, there comes better understanding of thepossibilities the PNF technique brings, which means

all in all, a faster and improved learning of basic PNFpatterns and a fast transfer to practical applications.

Each PNF pattern is represented in five different waysfor the best possible understanding of the process:

basic component description with logicalvisualization names representation of movement patterns from

everyday life PNF patterns demonstrated (individually) PNF patterns demonstrated by the physiotherapist

with the patient PNF patterns applied to the Freestyler
