FOREWORD Wearing the HIJAB is compulsory in Islam. The HIJAB requirement is Islam is not only
about covering one’s hair but should also cover the bosom or chest area. It is evident in
this Ayat:
“And say to the believing women that they should lower their gaze and guard their
modesty; that they should not display their beauty and ornaments except what must
ordinarily appear thereof; that they should draw their veils over their bosoms and not
display their beauty except to their husbands, their fathers, their husbands' fathers,
their sons, their husbands' sons, their brothers, or their brothers' sons or their sisters'
sons, or their women or the servants whom their right hands possess, or male servants
free of physical needs, or small children who have no sense of the shame of sex, and
that they should not strike their feet in order to draw attention to their hidden
ornaments. And O you Believers turn you all together towards Allah, that you may
attain Bliss.” (Quran 24:31).
While there are many guides out there on how to wear the hijab, I find that some do not
comply with the requirement of the Syariah which requires one to cover the chest (or
bosom) and not be transparent. .
In this e-book, I have compiled 10 different hijab styles (PLUS 3 BONUS STYLES!) that fit
the requirement of the Syariah. I have chosen styles using the square and long (shayla)
scarves in this e-book because they are easily obtained anywhere in the world.
In this e-book, you will also find:
How to adequately cover one’s neck if using a transparent scarf.

Tips on which scarf material are suitable for each styles
Tips on which style is suitable for which season
How the same style can be used on different scarves and create a different look
suitable for different occasions.
I have also included the measurement of the scarves used in each different style as a
guide for you so you can get similar results when trying them out. There are also photos
of the same style using different scarves.
I hope that through this e-book more Muslimah would be able to wear the hijab in style
and in accordance to the Syariah. It is also a useful guide for new hijab wearing sisters as
each style are shown step-by-step.
Last by not least, I thank Allah for giving me the ideas to put forth in this e-book that I
hope will benefit all Muslim sisters all over the world.

BASIC NEEDS Before we start, there are a few basic things that you should have ready
The scarves, of course: Here are some different types that you may want to have in
your collection:
Plain square scarves with or without
patterned edges such as sequins or
embroidery
Square scarves with floral or geometric
patterns all over
Square scarves with embroidery or sequins
for formal occasions
Long scarves or shaylas with or without
tassels
The accessories: I recommend that you have a few types of brooch and pins handy so
you can accessories your hijab according to the different functions that you are
attending. Large, glittery brooches can add sparkle to a plain scarf worn for a party or
formal occasions. Simple plastic ones can be used to for casual wear, while gold or
silver plated ones would be suitable for office wear. Here are some examples:
8
Above: Some useful accessories for hijab styling
The long pin is useful to keep the scarves in place, either at the sides or top of the hijab.
The Underscarf: There are a few benefits of wearing an underscarf:
• Keeps the hair under the scarf. This avoids having a messy look with hair peeking out
of the scarf around your face. This ensure that your aurah is covered at all times
• Keeps the hijab in place. The underscarf can act as an underlay for your scarf to avoid
it from slipping off your head.
• Gives shape to the hijab, especially at the forehead. There are underscarves with thick
edges which help gives shape to the hijab.
• Provides extra coverage. Underscarves such as the mini-hijab not only gives shape, but
also help covers the neck. It is good for the cold season too, to keep you warm

Here are some different types of underscarves and hair bands that you may find useful:

Guide on Choosing the Right Underscarf: SCARF FABRIC TYPE Recommended
underscarf Why
Thin or transparent (e.g : chiffon)
Mini-hijab with a FIRM EDGE
Helps cover the neck and provides a base for a nice shape at the top of the hijab.
Medium thickness (e.g cotton)
FIRM EDGE bonnet Provides a firm base of the top of the hijab. Don’t require extra coverage at the neck since the fabric is not transparent.
Thick (e.g polyester mix) Lace or knit bonnet Hair band (cotton or lace)
Thick fabric usually helps the top of the hijab to stay in shape, so a bonnet or hairband is sufficient.
11
SCARF SIZES There are four different sizes of scarves used in this guide. I recommend you to use
similar sizes when you try out the styles shown. However, you can still experiment
using other sizes as you wish. Here are the sizes of the scarves used in this book.
SIZE 1: 36 x 36 in (92cm x 92cm)
SIZE 2: 42 x 42 in (107 x 107 cm)
SIZE 3: 48 x 48in (122cm x 122cm)
12
SIZE 4: 72in x 28in (186cm x 71.5cm)
TIP:
The sizes in this book are merely as a guide for you. Do experiment with different sizes as
well. For sisters with larger body frame, you would need a wider scarf and vice versa.
Wider scarves provide more coverage, so it depends on your individual preferences as well.
13
THE BASIC STEPS Before we get started on the different styles, I would like to show some basic steps that
are commonly used in hijab styling.
1. Folding the edge (applies for square types only) Bring one corner of the square hijab onto the centre. You should see a triangular fold
formed. The size of this triangular affects the size of the hijab used. If you want a
shorter hijab, or if the hijab is big and you want to make it smaller, pull the corner
deeper towards the centre, so you shall see a larger triangle. Same goes if your hijab is
small and you want to make it larger, pull the corner away from the centre, so the
triangle is smaller.

14
2. Sides Tuck This can be the tricky bit for new wearers. Here are the steps:
Put the hijab which has been folded at the edge, on the head. Do bear in mind that
the position of the hijab, either centrally placed or lop-sided on the head, has an
effect to the length of the corners that fall in front of the body. See photos below for
further illustration:
Short length
(Scarf is placed more towards one side of the body, in this
case more on the left, leaving the right corner shorter)
Mid length
(Scarf is placed more towards one side of the body, in this
case more on the left, leaving the right corner shorter, about
half of the length of the left side)
Same length
(Scarf is placed on the centre of the head, giving the same
length on both sides)
Once you have decided on the length of the front, pull the hijab close to your chin.
There are two ways to proceed.
1. Pin First, Tuck Later Method
2. Tuck First, Pin Later Method.
15
a. Pin First, Tuck Later:
For this method, you need to pin the two sides of the scarf together with a small pin
first like this:
Above: Use a small pin to hold the two sides of the scarf together
Make sure the pin is not too tight or too loose. It has to be comfortable to you, which
means you can still move your head around without feeling “poked” by the pin yet it
can secure the scarf around your face without falling off.
Then, tuck the sides of the hijab, slightly below the ears, in. Do on both sides. See
below:
1. Tuck the sides in
towards to ears
2. Tuck them neatly
3. Neatly tucked
4. Do on both sides
Adjust the hijab on top of your face neatly.
16
b. Tuck First, Pin Later.
For this method, tuck in the sides of the hijab slightly below your ears first. Use your
right hand for the right side and vice versa, like below.
Above : Tuck the sides then pull together to the middle under your chin
Once you are comfortable with the look, pull them together under your chin and secure
with a pin. Again, make sure that it is comfortable to you.
Above: Hold the scarf with a small pin
Adjust the top accordingly so it looks neat.
TIP:
For beginners, try with a COTTON scarf first. Cotton materials are easier to handle
because they don’t slip much and stay firm at the top of your face. If you are using the
softer fabric such as chiffon, I suggest you wear the FIRM BONNET or MINI-HIJAB
with a FIRM edge to keep the shape around your face and pin the sides with a long pin
to avoid it from slipping.
17
3. Back Wrap In a few of the styles shown later, we will wrap the scarf around the head, like this:
This is quite easy to do. You just pull one corner of the scarf (which is covering your
chest) over your shoulders upwards to the midway between the top of your head and
the middle-back.
1.Pull one side over the shoulder of
the opposite side
2. Pull upwards towards the top of your head
3. Secure in the middle of the head
Then you can secure it will a long pin by pinning together the edge to the scarf
lengthwise. Make sure you don’t poke your head with the pin! Or you can use a small
brooch instead of a long pin
18
. Above: Secure the edge to the top of the head. Pin together with the scarf for better security.
For some of the styles, you can pull the edge forward to the other side of your face, like
below.
Above: Pull all the way around the head and down towards the chin. Secure with a clip or tuck inside
the scarf
This is useful when using thin materials as it will not look too bulky and the extra layer
can provide extra coverage to ensure your neck is not visible.
These are the basic steps of hijab styling that you need to know.
19
STEP BY STEP GUIDE
20
STYLE # 1 : CLASSY
This style is suitable for all types of scarf fabric. You can use the mid-size or large-

33
STEP-BY-STEP (STYLE #5): Make sure you have a suitable underscarf on before putting on the hijab (refer to Guide
on Choosing the Right Underscarf on page 10).and have all the pins and brooches
within reach. In this example, the Patterned Blue scarf is of 36 x 36 in (92cm x 92cm) in
size, soft polyester material with a mini hijab used as the underscarf. For this style, part
of the head will be visible, so it is recommended that you wear a bonnet or mini-hijab
underneath for a neater look.
Blue Mini hijab is used as the underscarf. Here
we also use the lace bonnet underneath to cover
the hair line completely
Put the scarf on the head. DO NOT fold the
edges. Keep one side shorter than the other as
shown above. Secure with a pin
1. Bring the scarf which
is at the back to the front as shown
2. Pull the side all the way to the top of the head
3. Secure with a small clip
34
4. The front view. Tidy up the folds at the shoulder to make a
triangle in front

hijab as an underscarf for the extra warmth.
.
For this style, put the scarf like the above, both sides of equal length to each other.
1. Pull one side towards the opposite
shoulder. Secure with a pin. Make sure it forms a curve (like the letter “U”) on the
front as shown above.
2. Pull the other side side upwards towards the top of the head
3. Secure with a long pin in the middle to keep the scarf in place
47
4. Bring the scarf around the head to the side

For this style, put the scarf like the above, one side shorter length than the other. Note
how short the right side is compared to STYLE # 8.
50
1. Pull the shorter side downwards and
pull the longer upwards over your shoulder.
2. Wrap around the head and secure with a small clip
3. Pull down the folds near the neck towards the chest and tidy

MORE TIPS A few more TIPS for you:
1. Experiment with different styles using the same scarf. Find out how to create
different looks using the same scarf and different clothes by changing the
style of the hijab.
2. Accessorize! Different brooches can create different looks for you.
3. When wearing a full patterned scarf, keep the clothing simple or of a solid
color to avoid looking “overcrowded”.
4. Since scarves are usually cheaper than clothes, buy more scarves and with the
different styles that we have here, you can create different looks using the
same clothes. So economical!
5. Some women, especially those with sharp features and bone structure, can
wear most of the styles without the firm-edge bonnet as in the examples.
Give it a try. If it looks good and you feel comfortable, then a simple knit
bonnet or hair band would do.
