Rule: To change a statement into a question, reverse the order of subject and verb.

Rule: To change a statement into a question, reverse the order of subject and verb.

Note: the literal answer to a “can” question is “yes” or “no”, but idiomatically we use it to request things politely.

What means ‘periphrastic’?

What does ‘periphrastic’ mean?

Rule: for what, how, when, why, where, how much and who questions, use a helping verb (does, have, are, etc.) and change the main verb into its root form (mean, not means).

Rule: for what, how, when, why, where, how much, and who questions, use a helping verb (does, have, are, etc.) and change the main verb into its root form (cost, not costs).

Rule: For “yes or no” past tense questions, use the root form of the main verb (go, not went).

Rule: For past tense where why, what, who and how questions, use a helping verb (did, have, were) and use the root form of the main verb (buy, not bought).

Rule: for conditional/hypothetical future questions, use the root verb (eat) or conditionals (would, could, should, were to)

Rule: For polite requests, use “would” or “could” instead of “will” or “can”.
