Correcting student mistakes

Rule: To change a statement into a question, reverse the order of subject and verb.

You can tell me the time?

Can you tell me the time?Could you tell me the time?What time is it?

Rule: To change a statement into a question, reverse the order of subject and verb.

Note: the literal answer to a “can” question is “yes” or “no”, but idiomatically we use it to request things politely.

What means ‘periphrastic’?

What does ‘periphrastic’ mean?

Rule: for what, how, when, why, where, how much and who questions, use a helping verb (does, have, are, etc.) and change the main verb into its root form (mean, not means).

How much does the room cost?

Rule: for what, how, when, why, where, how much, and who questions, use a helping verb (does, have, are, etc.) and change the main verb into its root form (cost, not costs).

Did you went to Ormoc last weekend?

Did you go to Ormoc last weekend?

Rule: For “yes or no” past tense questions, use the root form of the main verb (go, not went).

Where you bought that dalandan?

Where did you buy that dalandan?

Rule: For past tense where why, what, who and how questions, use a helping verb (did, have, were) and use the root form of the main verb (buy, not bought).

If I will eat the soup, I will feel better?

Rule: for conditional/hypothetical future questions, use the root verb (eat) or conditionals (would, could, should, were to)

Will you mind passing the rice bowl?

Rule: For polite requests, use “would” or “could” instead of “will” or “can”.

Is coming your mother tomorrow?

To change an “is” statement into a question, put the “is” at the beginning of the sentence:

Rule: How much refers to uncountable nouns (rice, water, knowledge, prices)How many refers to countable nouns (apples, people, distance)
