Eastern Province is one of the Zambia’s ten provinces. The province lies between the Luangwa River and borders with Malawi to the east and Mozambique to the south, from Chama in the Northeast to the North of Luangwa in the South. It covers a total area of 51,476 Km 2 and is divided into nine (9) Districts namely: Chipata, as the provincial capital; Nyimba; Petauke, Sinda, Katete, Lundazi; Mambwe; Chadiza; and Vubwi. English is the official language with local languages which include; Chichewa, Nsenga and Tumbuka The province is serviced with 1 Central Hospital, 1 General Hospital and 9 District Hospitals. The HIV/AIDS prevalence is 9.3% and is free from epidemic outbreaks of yellow fever, ebola and cholera. The province is connected to the Port of Nacala by the Chipata-Mchinji rail line, which passes through Malawi. Plans exists to construct a 378 km rail line that will link Chipata-Mchinji rail line to the TAZARA rail line in Serenje. The total cost of the new rail line is US$2.3 billion and it is funded by the Chinese Government under the Infrastructure Development Project for Sub Sahara Africa. Eastern Province has 2 million hectares suitable for crop cultivation. The province has also 1.1 million hectares of land suitable for livestock grazing. The Province has 3 National Wildlife Parks namely, South Luangwa (9,050 Km2), Lukusuzi (2,720 km2) and Luambe (254 km2). The province has also 4 Game Management Areas (GMAs), which cover most of the Luangwa Valley outside the National Wildlife Parks. The GMAs are Lupande (4,840 km2), Lumimba (4,500 km2), West Petauke (4,140 km2) and Sandwe (1,530 km2). 65 protected forest areas. These include 8 National and 57 Local Forests covering a total of 460,216 hectares Gemstones which include: tourmaline, granite, garnets, aquamarine amethyst and quartz. The Province also has potential for the mining of gold, zinc, phosphate and copper Mobile phone and internet in the province is provided by 3 service providers, namely Zamtel, Airtel and MTN. 6 private radio stations and a national broadcaster ZNBC Radio 1 and 2. 3 Television Stations and Multichoice. Eastern Water and Sewerage Company (ESWC) provides water supply and sewerage services in all the urban and peri-urban areas of the province. The company only covers 70% of the urban population. 55% of rural population have access to safe drinking water and 20% have access to proper sanitation services. There are 10 commercial banks providing retail banking services in the province. The banks include Zanaco Bank, Barclays Bank, Finance Bank, Investrust Bank, Natsave Bank, Indo-Zambia Bank, Stanbic Bank, First National Bank, BancABC and Cavmount Bank. The province has no operational dry port facilities. However, plans exists to construct a dry port at Chipata Railway Station at a cost €27 million. The province has 2 border posts at Mwami and Chanida. One international Airport called Mfuwe International Airport. 1 domestic airport located in Chipata. The Province has Aerodromes located in Petauke, Katete and Lundazi Districts. The Province has 2 Private Universities, 3 Colleges, 3 Skills and Trades Training Institutions, 94 Secondary Schools, 679 Primary Schools, 260 Early Childhood Centres and 36 Private Schools. The literacy rate for the province is 47.6%. The Province has a total of 2,246 Km roads, out of which 800 Km are paved and 1,446 Km are unpaved. Electricity supply in the province is provided by ZESCO, which supplies hydropower to all urban areas in the province. There are 20 fuel filling stations in the province. The Province has nineteen (19) constituencies. Each constituency is represented by one (1) elected Member of Parliament (MP). The province has 169 wards. There is one (1) elected councilor per ward. There are about 431,957 cattle, 166,109 goats, 19,746 sheep, 251,820 pigs and 1,000,000 birds (poultry) in the province. The fishery sector in the province is not fully developed. The province has 1,703 fish farmers operating 2,333 fish ponds. The current fish output is 500 tonnes. The estimated fish consumption in province is 5,000 tonnes and there is deficit of 4,500 tonnes. The horticulture sector in the province covers fresh vegetables and fruits, which include asparagus, tomato, onion, eggplant, cucumber, carrot, watermelon, orange, lemon, banana, and mango. The current agro processing activities in the province include: Peanut Butter Production, Animal or Stock Feed Production, Grain Milling (Rice, and Maize), Edible Oil Production, Meat, Dairy, Cotton Ginning and Honey Processing. • Strategic location and short distance to port of Nacala in Mozambique 1,150 km by rail from Chipata to Nacala Port • Agro-climatic conditions that allow diverse range of agricultural production. • Availability of fertile and arable land: 2 million ha suitable for cultivation 1.1 million ha suitable for grazing. • The province has abundant wildlife and forest. • The province is part of the Zambia Malawi-Mozambique Growth Triangle, which provides access to regional markets. • Availability of commercial banks and insurance companies. • The province has active Eastern Province Chamber of Commerce and.
