Schrag is a retired Speech, English and Theater public school teacher who is a transplant to Iowa from South Dakota. She has been a quilter for over 40 years having learned the art of hand quilting from the Mennonite women in rural Southeastern, SD. Since that time, she has progressed from hand quilting to quilting on her domestic sewing machine, and then to a long-arm, and now is the owner and operator of a long-arm quilting business called Phabu- lous Machine Quilting. She specializes in t-shirt quilts and quilts made from wedding dresses, however, she will do custom quilting, as well as edge-to-edge designs. Currently, she is quilting “out-of-her-head” by creating designs that fit the quilt motif. Schrag says, “I may go to computerized quilting motifs, but for right now, I enjoy the challenge and creativity of inventing my own quilting de- signs. “Besides”, Schrag says with a hearty laugh, “by inventing my own designs, I believe I am warding off the curse of Alzheimer’s Disease; with each quilt top, I am making new brain waves and problem solving to determine what quilting would best honor the quilt and the quilt maker”. Her topic, “Modern Quilts from Ancient Mosaics” is based upon her travels to the Mediterra-nean area where she discovered the similarities between ancient Greek floor tiles, wall fres-coes, and marble designs comparing them to their American counterpart in quilts made in a similar design. Schrag is a retired Speech, English and Theater public school teacher who is a transplant to Iowa from South Dakota. Community Sew Day Saturday March 3rd Please join me Saturday, March 3rd, from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM for our Annual Com-munity Sew Day. Come for the day or just a couple of hours, whatever works for your schedule. Bring your sewing machine, an extension cord, and supplies to sew-sew-sew!!! As in the past, I will have quilt kits available. Each kit contains a pattern and fabric for a twin-size quilt top. And of course, you are more than welcome to bring a donation quilt of your own to work on. Either way, you will be responsible for providing the bat-ting, backing and binding to finish the quilt. If you wish, you can work on creating scrappy blocks by sewing various size strips of fabric together. This is a project you can work on Saturday and then walk away from when you leave for the day. Lunch will be provided. Please bring a treat to share. The building has a pop vending machine or you can bring your own beverage. Everyone is welcome to join in the sewing. You do not need to be an EPQG Member to participate. Remember, this is a Community Day. If you have any questions or concerns regarding the Community Sew Day, please con-tact Marsha Horner at 515.979.7218.

President’s Note

and I will see you all at the next guild meeting.
