A NOTE FROM THE PRODUCER •••

Welcome to the second annual Summer Fest. We are pleased that we have been able to Increase our summer stock offerings and the size of the company. Yet, we are saddened by the recent death of former Theatre Arts Chair, Gerald Sullivan. During his twenty-one years at Eastern, he directed many a summer production. Several of his former students have achieved professional promi· nence in theatre.and film. SummerFest '91 is respectfully dedicated to "Doc."

This year, talented performers and technicians have joined us from colleges and universities In Tennessee, Missouri, Minnesota, and Kansas, along with several talented majors from our own department. This summer marks two new begin· nings. This is the first time that any summer unit can boast such diversity of tal· ent, and it is the first four show experience.

None of this could have been done without your generous support of our benet~ performances nor without the equally. generous support of our patrons. Your support is playing an increasingly important role In funding our program and the quality it affords. As appropriations from the state are cut and inflation continues ~s dizzy spiral, patron support becomes a necessity. Necessary to our success in supporting a service to commun~y. campus and region is your volunteer donations. Please take a moment to fill out the attached form with your pledge or check and leave It In the receptacle in front of the lobby mural. Your generosity is appreciated.

GARY DENTON A 1991 EIU graduate with a double major in English and Theatre, Gary has done just about every kind of work the theatre has to offer I Last year for SUMMER· FEST 90, Gary designed costumes for THE PRINCE AND THE PAUPER at the same time he was playing the Ncwrator in COLEI and running lights for THE ODD COUPLE. This year, he serves as Master Electrician for all SUMMER FEST 91 shows and operates the light board lor THE MOUSETRAP- p:>sitions he is com· fortable filing, since he's worked lights tor a number of plays here. (It is not unusu· al to see Gary on a 12·foot ladder stringing lighting cable, hanging and forusing lights, and painting large scenic units.) Indeed, before rehearsals started, Gary

~ was one of a small crew that built THE MOUSETRAP and STOP THE WORLD ... · • sets. When asked how many shows he's lighted and/or built, Gary sagely

responds, •J don't remember." Theatre audiences remember Gary in PHILADELPHIA HERE I COME, NICHOLAS NICKLEBY, DR. FAUSTUS, several children's shows, THE DRUNKARD, ONCE UPON A MATTRESS- the list goes on and on. Most recently, he was seen as the Father in CINDERELLA and the menadng Irishman in THE BIRTHDAY PARTY.

RICH HEm Most recently appearing as the Messenger in CINDERELLA: THE STEPMOTHER'S VERSION, and Petey in THE BIRTHDAY PARTY, Rich is a transfer student from Highland Community College where he played various roles including the tide role in THE MISER; Hero in A FUNNY THING HAPPENED ON THE WAY TO THE FORUM; and Delmont Williams in THE MISS ARECRACKER CONTEST, the same play that he will assistant direct for this year's SUMMER FEST. KAREN PUHARICH This is Karen's first extensive theatre experience since high school, although she says she's always had an interest in working in thealre. This summer, she's had plenty of experience doing just that - ser.1ng as Costume Assistwlt and Assistant to the Costume Designer for all four shows. Karen sews, fits actors into cos· tumes, makes alterations, repairs ~Stull)es, and does much of the washing and ironing - so that when actors appear onstage, their costumes are just righr.

' Karen's vocational interests, however, are quite different from theatre. Avidly inter· ested in biology, botany, and the environment. she will finish a Master's degree in

: Botany this summer and hopes to go on to research in botany and in the environ· i ment While this is Karen's first time to work with costumes, she thinks 1rs swellr
