SCOUTING AUSTIN PEAY: Eastern Illinois hosts league leading Austin Peay on Thursday night for the Panthers lone home game in a current six game OVC run. EIU dropped the earlier season decision at Austin Peay 73-57 as the Panthers played without Romain Martin. Austin Peay currently holds a one game lead in the OVC standings over Murray State. Reigning OVC Player of the Year Drake Reed leads the Governors with 15.7 points per game as five APSU players average in double figures.

ABOUT THE GAME: • This will be the 28th meeting between EIU and Austin Peay with the Governors owning a 15-12 series advantage. APSU has won five straight in the series dating back to the 2004-05 season. Austin Peay on the first meeting this year in Clarksville, 73-57, as the Governors opened up a 38-24 halftime lead en route to the victory. Julio Anthony led EIU with 17 points as the only Panther to reach double figures in the game.

• Eastern Illinois will once again participate in this year’s ESPNU Bracketbusters as the Panthers were matched up against Evansville of the Missouri Valley Conference. The game will be played on Saturday, Feb. 23 at Lantz Arena. Start time has not yet been determined. EIU is 0-2 in previous Bracketbuster games against Eastern Michigan and Loyola-Chicago.

EIU HEAD COACH MIKE MILLER: Mike Miller enters his third season at Eastern Illinois following a season in which the Panthers closed with five wins in the last month of action. This season Miller has stated that his team should have expectations when taking the floor as he brings a history helping turnaround programs to EIU. Miller is 20-59 in his third season at EIU improving his win total by four wins in 2006-07. He was at Texas State for six seasons as the head coach winning two regular-season Southland Conference championships with another runner-up finish. Miller’s mark at Texas State was 87-79. His career record is now 107-138.

PANTHERS SIGN FOUR IN EARLY PERIOD: Eastern Illinois head coach Mike Miller stocked up for the 2008-09 season as the Panthers signed four players with Indiana High School ties during the early signing period. EIU added current high school products Daimion Garrett, 6-6 small forward from Evansville Reitz HS - rated No. 2 player in Indiana; James Hollowell, a 6-5 small forward from Indianapolis North Central HS - rated No. 15 player in Indiana; and Will Hamilton, a 6-3 shooting guard from Greenfield (Ind.) Central HS rated the No. 2 shooting guard in Indiana. Miller also inked junior college guard Jay Smith from Trinity Valley (Texas) CC. The 6-2 guard played at Terre Haute (Ind.) South HS and hit 112 pointers last year at TVCC.

PANTHER FAST BREAK NOTES• Julio Anthony snapped another long free throw streak on Saturday at Samford but the senior guard continues to rank in the NCAA Top 10 for free throw percentage at 90.3 percent. Anthony ranks 9th while teammate Bobby Catchings ranks 81st at 82.7 percent. While Anthony is currently chasing the top spot in the NCAA he is also chasing the top spot in EIU single season record books held by Charlie Thomas at 90.8 percent during the 1977-78 season.

• As a team EIU also has done well at the charity stripe as the Panthers rank 17th in the nation at 75.4 percent. EIU has an amazing string of shooting 85.7 percent in each of their last three games despite a different number of attempts in each game. The best season team free throw percent for EIU was 77.5 percent set during the 2000-01 season.

• EIU did an excellent job of taking care of the basketball over the weekend as the Panthers posted back-to-back games with less than ten turnovers. Against Jacksonville State on Thursday, EIU had a season low six turnovers. They followed that up with nine turnovers at Samford. EIU has had four games this season in which they committed less than ten turnovers, the Panthers are 1-3 in those games (at Bowling Green and vs. Tennessee Martin had 8 turnovers).

• While the turnovers were down at Samford, unfortunately so were the assists as EIU handed out a season low six assists against the Bulldogs. In its previous two wins over Morehead State and Jacksonville State, EIU had 29 total assists. For the season EIU has 272 assists Jon’Tee Willhite the current team leader with 56 (2.5 assists per game).

• Senior Jake Byrne had an exciting trip last week as the forward flew to New York City for an interview on Wall Street on Thursday morning. Following the interview he joined the team in Jacksonville, Ala. scoring 12 points in the Panthers 72-67 win over the Gamecocks. On Friday he learned that he earned the internship with Merrill Lynch. Earlier this season Byrne was named one of six athletes to be honored as an OVC Scholar-Athlete of the Year.

• Ousmane Cisse is starting to find his shot close to basket. Starting with the Panthers game at Tennessee State where Cisse was a perfect 5-for-5, the sophomore center has knocked down 70 percent of his shots over the last four games. Included in that mix was his third career double-double in the EIU win versus Morehead State in which he had 10 points and 11 rebounds.

• Against Jacksonville State last Thursday, EIU picked up its first Division I win of the season during regulation. The Panthers previous two wins over Division I schools this season both came in overtime at home. That win also snapped an 11 game road losing streak for EIU which dated back to the Panthers season ending road trip win at Jacksonville State in 2006-07.
