NFL CHAMPIONSHIPCHICAGO CARDINALS 28, PHILADELPHIA 21

Sunday, December 28, 1947 | Comiskey Park

A frozen Comiskey Park field did not hamper the Cardinals ability to run on the Eagles 5 – 2 – 4 defense. The Cardinals’ Elmer Angsman set a record by rushing for 159 yards on only 10 carries. Angsman scored twice on runs of 70-yards. Eagles QB Tommy Thompson set a record for pass completions, connecting on 27 of 44 attempts for 297 yards. Thompson’s only passing touchdown was the first TD of the day, within the final minute of the first half, as he connected with Pat McHugh for a 53-yard TD. The Cardinals Charlie Trippi scored two touchdowns with a 44-yard run and a 75-yard punt re-turn. Eagles back Steve Van Buren, the NFL’s leading ground gainer that season with 945 yards, gained only 26 yards on 18 carries, due in part to the slippery field conditions. The Eagles were forced to change into sneakers after being penalized for illegal equipment but could never come closer than within a touchdown to the Cardi-nals who held leads of 21-7 and 28-14 in the second half.

After many years of waiting, the Philadelphia Eagles finally won the National Football League championship. Playing in a driving snow-storm at Shibe Park, Coach Greasy Neale’s team triumphed over the champion Chicago Cardinals 7-0. A protective tarpaulin was not removed from the playing field in Shibe Park until 30 minutes be-fore the kickoff but snow blanketed the entire field by game time. Of the 36,309 people who bought tickets, a total of 28,864 braved the storm with the temperature below the freezing mark to watch the title game, which began a half hour later than scheduled because the snow made removal of the tarpaulin a difficult operation. The sidelines were marked by ropes tied to stakes and conditions were so adverse that commissioner Bert Bell decreed that while the 10-yard first-down chain would be used, there would be no measur-ing; referee Ron Gibbs would be the final judge of all first downs. The Eagles started the game’s only touchdown drive near the con-clusion of the third quarter when the Cardinals’ Elmer Angsman fumbled a handoff from Ray Mallouf that Eagles’ lineman, Frank “Bucko” Kilroy, recovered on the Cards’ 17. Three plays into the fourth quarter, Steve Van Buren scored on a five-yard run and Cliff Patton kicked the PAT. Van Buren had pounded out 98 yards on 26 carries. Bosh Pritchard rushed for 67 yards and Tommy Thompson ran mainly up the middle for 50 yards. The rugged weather condi-tions made it almost impossible to a pass. Thompson was 2 for 12 for 7 yards while Mallouf hit on 3 of 8 for 35 yards. Kicking was just as difficult; Patton attempted three field goals but made none while Pat Harder of Chicago bobbled his only attempt.

The Philadelphia Eagles, in the NFL title game for the third con-secutive year, defeated the Los Angeles Rams 14-0 as halfback Steve Van Buren set records with 31 carries and 196 yards gained. Van Buren achieved the record after a storm, that began 24 hours before kickoff, dropped almost two inches of rain on the muddy Los Angeles Coliseum field. A crowd of more than 60,000, which would have set a playoff record, was expected before the storm but only 27,980 attended the game. With all-pro Van Buren carrying the ball, the Eagles were able to control possession for 70 plays and 274 rushing yards. The Rams rushed for only 21 yards and did not advance the ball further than the Eagles’ 26-yard line. The Birds scored their first TD in the second quarter on a 31-yard pass from quarterback Tommy Thompson to Pete Pihos. The Eagles other score came in the third quarter as defensive end Leo Skladany blocked Bob Waterfield’s punt from the 5-yard line. The snap of the ball was high and Waterfield had no chance to get the kick away. Skladany picked up the bouncing ball on the 2-yard line and scored. The victory marked the Eagles second straight shutout in the NFL title game, climaxing the rise that began when Earle (Greasy) Neale was hired as coach in 1941.

The Philadelphia Eagles overcame leads of 6-0 and 13-10 by the Green Bay Packers to score a 17-13 victory for their first NFL cham-pionship in 11 years. Bill Quinlan intercepted Norm Van Brocklin’s pass on the first play of the game and Eagles’ rookie Ted Dean fum-bled on the Birds’ second possession. Five plays later, the Packers’ Paul Hornung kicked a 20-yard field goal. Another Hornung field goal increased Green Bay’s lead to 6-0 in the second quarter before Philadelphia got on the scoreboard with a two-play, 57-yard drive. Van Brocklin passed 22 yards to Tommy McDonald, then teamed up with McDonald on a 35-yard TD pass. A Bobby Walston field goal for Philadelphia made it 10-6 at the half, but Green Bay took a 13-10 lead in the first two minutes of the fourth quarter. Bart Starr’s 7-yard pass to Max McGee marked the Packers only touch-down. On the ensuing kickoff, Dean returned the ball 58 yards to the Packers’ 39. Dean then completed the drive with a 5-yard TD run. Chuck Bednarik endured 58 minutes of the contest - playing center on offense and linebacker on defense.

The Eagles took a 13-0 lead midway in the final period, then were shocked by two Steve Bartkowski TD passes in the last five minutes as they dropped a 14-13 decision in the NFC Wild Card Playoff game on Christmas Eve. The Birds struck first late in the opening period when Ron Jaworski hit Harold Carmichael with a 13-yd TD pass. The Eagles defense played inspired football all afternoon, and when Wilbert Montgomery scored on a 1-yd TD run with 7:24 elapsed in the 3rd quarter, the Birds appeared on their way to a second round playoff game at Los Angeles. However, disaster struck a few minutes later after Atlanta had recovered Mike Hogan’s fumble at their own 15-yd line. Seven plays later, Bartkowski found TE Jim Mitchell with a 20-yd scoring pass and Tim Mazetti’s successful conversion made the score 13-7. Atlanta scored again on their next possession on a 37-yd Bartkowski-to-Wallace Francis aerial and Mazzetti’s point after proved to be the eventual margin of victory. With just 1:39 remaining in the game, Jaworski drove the Eagles from their own 34-yd line to the Atlanta 16, but with :17 remaining, Mike Michel’s 34-yd FG attempt sailed just outside the right upright and the Eagles’ season had come to an end.

Second-year man Billy Campfield took a short pass from Ron Ja-worski and turned it into a 63-yd TD in the last period to break a 17-17 tie and help the Eagles to their first post-season win since 1960. The Birds got on the scoreboard first with Harold Carmi-chael’s 17-yd TD reception from Jaworski, but the Bears eventu-ally took a 17-10 halftime lead on a field goal and two short scoring runs by Walter Payton. Carmichael and Jaworski teamed up to tie the game in the third period with a 29-yd TD that set the stage for Campfield’s big play. Tony Franklin iced the game with a 34-yd FG later in the last quarter. The key defensive play came late in the third stanza when veteran CB Bobby Howard intercepted a Mike Phipps pass in the Eagles endzone after the Bears had driven to the Philadelphia 9-yard line with the score tied at 17.

The Eagles’ Super Bowl hopes were crushed by the underdog Buc-caneers in the warm December sunshine of Tampa, Florida. The host team set the stage for the game after receiving the opening kickoff and proceeding to drive 80 yards, holding the ball for 9:34, to set up Ricky Bell’s 4-yd. touchdown run. That early 7-0 lead was eventually expanded to 17-0 before the Eagles got on the score-board just before halftime with an 11-yd TD pass from Ron Jaworski to Charlie Smith. That score was set up by rookie LB Jerry Robin-son’s pass interception and 37-yd return to the Tampa Bay 11-yd line. The Eagles closed to 17-10 on Tony Franklin’s 42-yd FG in the third quarter, but the Bucs put the game out of reach midway through the final stanza on a 9-yd scoring pass from Doug Williams to TE Jimmie Giles. With Bell leading the way with 142 yards, Tampa Bay outrushed the Eagles, 186 to 48. Wilbert Montgomery carried only 13 times for 35 yards.

The Eagles wiped out a 14-7 deficit with Wilbert Montgomery TD runs of 8 and 5 yards in the third quarter, then went on to score 10 more points in the last quarter to advance to the NFC Champion-ship Game for the first time in the history of the club. The Eagles’ swarming defense caused and recovered three Minnesota fumbles and intercepted Viking QB Tommy Kramer five times after intermis-sion, with CBs Herman Edwards and Roynell Young each recording two. The Minnesota offense was held scoreless after halftime as the final two points came on a safety of Ron Jaworski. Montgomery had a solid 74 yards on 26 carries and added two pass receptions for 26 yards.

With only two healthy wide receivers and a passing game that was hampered by frigid temperatures and blustery winds, the Eagles rode a tremendous defensive effort and Wilbert Montgomery’s 194-yard rushing performance to the NFC title. The Birds never trailed after Montgomery’s 42-yard scoring burst early in the first quarter. Dallas managed a 7-7 tie at halftime after their only long drive of the day in the middle of the second period. The Eagles continued to dominate after intermission as fullback Leroy Harris (10 carries, 60 yards) complemented Montgomery’s effort. Dallas managed only 202 yards of total offense and 11 first downs to the Eagles 340 yards and 19 first downs.

The Eagles’ first Super Bowl appearance was a disappointing one as they fell behind early and could never play the type of football that had made them champions of the National Football Confer-ence. Behind quarterback Jim Plunkett, the game’s MVP, the Raid-ers jumped out to a 14-0 lead in the first period. The first score, a two-yard pass from Plunkett to Cliff Branch, was set up by the first of three Rod Martin interceptions that was returned to the Eagles’ 30-yard line with less than two minutes into the opening quarter. Plunkett followed late in the period with an 80-yard scoring pass to running back Kenny King. The Eagles trailed 14-3 at halftime and by 24-3 after three quarters. Keith Krepfle scored the only Phila-delphia touchdown on an 8-yard pass reception from Ron Jaworski. A first period apparent touchdown toss of 40 yards from Jaworski to Rodney Parker was nullified by an illegal motion penalty against the Eagles. That score, if it had stood, would have made the score 7-7 at the time.

More than 70,000 fans jammed the Vet but a dropped punt and a bobbled kickoff set up two of three New York touchdowns in the first period and the Eagles failed to claw their way out of the 20-0 hole that they had dug for themselves. Wally Henry’s fumble while trying to field the first punt of the game set up the Giants for a six play, 25-yard scoring drive early in the first quarter. Later in the stanza, the Giants marched 62 yards for another score and when Henry mishandled the ensuing kickoff, and New York’s Mike Haynes recovered in the Philadelphia end zone, the Birds found themselves trailing by 20 points. The Eagles scored on two Wilbert Montgomery runs after long drives to cut a 27-7 halftime deficit late in the game but could never regain possession as the Giants’ Rob Carpenter carried four straight times for 28 of his game-high 161 yards.

In one of the most memorable games in NFL history, the Central di-vision champion Chicago Bears advanced to the NFC Championship Game with a 20-12 victory over the visiting Eagles. The game, which began in sunny 29-degree weather, would later be dubbed the “Fog Bowl” after a thick fog rolled in off of Lake Michigan in the late 2nd quarter. Due to the fog, visibility on the playing field was extremely difficult in the 3rd quarter and was only marginally better in the final stanza. A 64-yd. pass from Mike Tomczak to Dennis McKinnon gave the Bears a 7-0 lead in the 1st quarter. The Eagles Luis Zende-jas then sandwiched three of his four FGs around 10 Chicago points and the Eagles trailed 17-9 at the half. Another Eagle FG cut the gap to 17-12 before Butler’s second FG put the game out of reach. Philadelphia’s offense moved the ball all day, racking up 430 total yards, but could not capitalize sufficiently. Eleven times the Eagles got inside the Bears 25-yd. line (including five trips inside the 11) but they only mustered four FGs. Even through thick fog, Eagles QB Randall Cunningham registered career-highs in passing with 54 attempts and 407 yards (27 completions) but was intercepted three times.

In the first NFL playoff game played at Veterans Stadium since December 1981, Rams QB Jim Everett threw two first quarter TD passes as Los Angeles went on to a 21-7 victory. After the Rams took a 14-0 lead on their first two drives, Philadelphia’s defense settled in and, despite LA’s frequent good field position, sufficiently shut down the visitors, allowing the Eagles to stay within reach. The Birds’ offense, however, was unable to mount a solid drive and made only three first downs in the first half. Philadelphia had a scoring opportunity, however, as Izel Jenkins intercepted an Ev-erett pass and returned it to midfield with 2:00 remaining in the half; but Philadelphia was forced to punt for the 6th time in the half. After intermission, the Eagles moved into Rams territory with their first three possessions with the second resulting in a missed 48-yd FG attempt and the third in a one-yard TD run by Anthony Toney that cut the Rams’ advantage to 14-7. Seth Joyner’s INT on the Rams’ next series gave the Eagles a chance to tie the score, but the offense again sputtered. Any chances of an Eagles comeback was dashed when Greg Bell scampered 54 yards and then scored on a 7-yd run two plays later to give Los Angeles a 21-7 with 2:46 remaining.

For the third straight season, the Eagles were eliminated from the playoffs in the first round. The loss also was the second consec-utive Wild Card playoff loss at home and marked the end of the Buddy Ryan era. This game started well for the Birds as on their first possession, QB Randall Cunningham hit TE Keith Jackson for a 66-yd catch-and-run play to the Redskins’ 11. However, a FG was all the Birds could muster, and after another FG, they had a 6-0 lead midway through the second quarter. The Skins then look the lead with a TD pass from Mark Rypien to Art Monk. With little more than 1:30 left before halftime, LCB Ben Smith tackled RB Ernest Byner causing an apparent fumble which he returned 94-yds for an Eagles TD. Unfortunately for the Birds, the replay official ruled that it was contact with the ground and not Smith that caused Byner to lose control of the ball and Washington maintained possession on the Eagles’ 6. Four plays later, the ‘Skins closed out the half with a FG and a 10-6 lead. The 3rd qtr began uneventfully until Wash. added a FG on its third series. On the Birds’ next series, Ryan in-serted backup QB Jim McMahon, in an effort to jumpstart the slug-gish Eagles attack, which to that point had already suffered four sacks and two lost fumbles. However, McMahon faired no better than Cunningham, throwing three straight incomplete passes. The move seemed to rally Washington, who subsequently marched 55-yds for a TD in five plays. With the score then 20-6, Cunningham returned at QB but the Eagles offense continued to sputter on four 4th quarter possessions.

With 6:22 left to play in the third quarter, the host Saints held a 20-7 lead over the Eagles. But the Birds rallied to pull off a 36-20 victory at the noisy Superdome, their first playoff win in the last six tries. Their victory was also their first road playoff win since 1949 and first post-season victory overall since January 11, 1981. The Saints opened the scoring by taking the opening kickoff and driv-ing 73 yards, capping the march with a 1-yd Craig Heyward touch-down run. Philadelphia answered two drives later when Randall Cunningham hit a streaking Fred Barnett with a 57-yd touchdown pass, tying the score at 7-7. New Orleans then added a Morten An-derson field goal and a 7-yd Bobby Herbert-to-Quinn Early TD pass for a 17-7 lead at the half. After intermission, the Eagles mounted a solid march deep into the Saints territory, but LB Rickey Jackson forced a fumble by Cunningham. The Saints converted the takeaway into an Andersen FG upping their lead to 20-7. But that would be all the scoring New Orleans would do as the Birds scored 29 straight points. First, an Eric Allen interception off Herbert set up a Roger Ruzek FG. Then Cunningham connected with Barnett whose spec-tacular leaping grab of the 35-yd TD pass cut the Birds deficit to three. With 6:48 left in the game, Philadelphia took its first lead on Heath Sherman’s 6-yd TD run. Then, with just over 5:00 remaining, and the Saints backed up to their own 7-yd line facing a 3rd & 23 situation, DE Reggie White sacked Herbert for a safety. The Eagles took the ensuing free kick and with the offensive line and Sherman in control, used the running game to methodically drive to the NO 22 before settling for a Ruzek FG. The Birds then iced the game when Allen returned his second INT for a TD.

The 1992-93 Philadelphia Eagles season came to an end as the Birds dropped a 34-10 divisional playoff game to the eventual Super Bowl champion Dallas Cowboys. The Birds jumped out on top first, scoring on their first possession with a 32-yd Roger Ruzek FG for an early 3-0 lead. On the ensuing Cowboy drive, a 39-yd Kelvin Martin kickoff return set up the first Dallas score, an eventual 1-yd Troy Aikman TD pass to newly acquired TE Derrick Tennell. The Cowboys scored again in the first half when Aikman connected with TE Jay Novacek for a 6-yd TD. On the ensuing Dallas kickoff, an untimely fumble by Vai Sikahema (his only fumble of the season) gave the Cowboys the ball on the Eagle 29, with :41 to play in the first half. Dallas quickly converted the turnover into a 20-yd Lin Elliot FG for a 17-3 halftime lead. The second half started just as badly as the first half ended for the Birds, as the Cowboys drove 70 yards, cashing in with a 23-yd TD run by Emmitt Smith. Dallas then added a 43-yd Elliot FG, followed by a 1-yd Derrick Gainer TD run to close out their scoring. The lone Eagle highlight came in the closing minutes of the already decided game, when Randall Cunningham threw a scram-bling 18-yd TD pass to Calvin Williams for the last Eagle score of the year.

In the highest scoring game in NFL playoff history, the Philadelphia Eagles soared to their first post season win at Veterans Stadium since January 11, 1981 (a 20-7 win over the Cowboys in the NFC Championship Game) with a 58-37 thumping of the Detroit Lions. Team an NFL post-season records were threatened all day long as the Eagles’ 58-point barrage was not only a club record, but was the third highest total by one team in NFL postseason history. After an interception and return by Eagles CB Mark McMillian set up the Birds deep in Lions’ territory, RB Charlie Garner scampered 15 yds. for Philly’s first of seven touchdowns – the most by any Ea-gles team in the postseason. On Detroit’s ensuing drive, QB Scott Mitchell, who otherwise had a miserable afternoon (29-13-155-4-1TD) before being replaced by Don Majkowski in the 2nd half, hit TE David Sloan on a 32-yd scoring pass to knot the score at 7-7 to end the first stanza. The second quarter would be nothing like the first as the Eagles scored 31 points in one of the most memorable 15-minute periods in club history. The Birds 31 2nd quarter points were the second most in one stanza in postseason play (behind only the 35 scored by Washington in the 2nd quarter of their SB XXII win over Denver). After a Gary Anderson field goal upped the Birds’ lead to 10-7, QB Rodney Peete, who was making his first playoff start, connected with WR Fred Barnett on a picture-perfect 22-yd scor-ing pass. Three plays later, Mitchell was intercepted by Eagles DB Barry Wilburn, who then raced 24 yards for a TD that gave the Birds a commanding 24-7 lead. Philly continued it’s torrid pace by inter-cepting yet another Mitchell aerial – this time MLB Kurt Gouveia came up with the third of the Birds’ postseason record 6 INTs on the day. That theft set up a 1-yd TD run by RB Ricky Watters. After the Lions stalled on their next drive, Philly would then take over on their own 16-yard line with 2:32 remaining. From there a 20-yd run by Garner and a 22-yd reception by Reggie Johnson set up a 43-yd Hail Mary pass from Peete to Rob Carpenter that gave the Eagles a 38-7 lead as time expired in the 1st half. Comfortably ahead as they entered the 2nd half, the Eagles would not slow down as Peete connected with Watters on a 45-yd TD pass. Peete, who finished the day 25-17-270-0-3TDs, led the Birds to five TDs and 3 FGs on their first 11 possessions before giving way to Randall Cunningham early on in the 4th qtr. Gary Anderson upped the Birds’ lead to 51-7 with a pair of 3rd qtr FGs (31 and 39-yds) to extend his consecu-tive FG streak in the postseason to 16 and break Rafael Septien’s league record of 15 set with the Cowboys from 1978-82. Although the Lions sandwiched a William Thomas INT return for a TD – the Birds’ 2nd defensive score of the game- with 4 TDs of their own in the game’s final 21 minutes, the outcome of the game was never in jeopardy as the Birds equaled their largest margin of victory in a playoff game with the 21-point win. There were many heroes on the afternoon for Philly, including Barnett who came through with a 8-109-1TD receiving performance. And the first-team defense also put together one of its finest efforts of the ‘95 campaign as they lim-ited the leagues #1 ranked offensive unit to just 7 points in the first 40 minutes. Employing a 5-DB set against the Lions’ high-octane offense, defensive coordinator Emmitt Thomas’s troops registered 6 INTs, 17 pass knockdowns, and 2 sacks, while limiting all-pro Barry Sanders to just 40 yards on 10 carries.

Ray Rhodes’ inaugural season as head coach of the Eagles came to a halt as they were downed by the Dallas Cowboys, 30-11, in an NFC Divisional Playoff game at Texas Stadium. The loss to the Cowboys marked the second time in four years that the Birds were eliminated from the playoffs at the hands of their divisional rivals. A balanced offensive attack and a stingy defense was the name of the game for the Cowboys from the start as they mounted a 17-3 halftime lead. With the Eagles trailing 3-0, Mark McMillian inter-cepted a Troy Aikman pass that was deflected by fellow CB Bobby Taylor. That set up a 26-yd FG by Gary Anderson on the first play of the 2nd qtr. to tie the game at 3-3. However, that scoring drive proved to be costly to the Eagles as starting QB Rodney Peete was lost for the game with a concussion suffered as a result of a hit by SS Darren Woodson. The Eagles would get no closer for the rest of the afternoon as scoring runs by Deion Sanders and Emmitt Smith vaulted Dallas to a 17-3 halftime lead. Dallas kicker Chris Boniol added two FGs (19 and 51 ydrs.) in the 3rd stanza, before Aikman connected with WR Michael Irvin on a 9-yd. scoring strike to give the ‘Boys a commanding 30-3 advantage. For Irvin, that TD catch would be his only reception of the day as rookie CB Bobby Taylor virtually shut down the all-pro receiver for the second consecutive game. The Eagles closed out the scoring on a 4-yd TD run by backup QB Randall Cunningham and two-point conversion pass from Cunning-ham to TE Reggie Johnson.

On a day dominated by constant rain and winds reaching up to 51 miles per hour, the Birds inability to produce points once inside the 49ers 20-yd line proved costly. The result was a 14-0 loss for Philadelphia and the first ever shut-out registered against the Ea-gles in post-season play. On the games opening drive, Philadelphia marched 43 yards to San Francisco’s 14. There, however, LB Lee Woodall threw Ty Detmer for a 8-yd. loss and forced the Birds to settle for a 40-yd FG attempt by Gary Anderson that was pushed wide left by the gusting winds. Thus had begun a trend of red zone futility that would plague the Eagles all afternoon. Early in the second stanza, QB Steve Young got the 49ers going, engineering a 74-yd drive comprised of short passes caught by five different re-ceivers. Young then put the 49ers on the scoreboard first by capping the drive with a 9-yd TD run on a quarterback draw. But Young paid a price for his TD, suffering badly bruised ribs on the play when he was hit by Darion Conner. The subsequent pain would make it difficult for Young to throw as the game wore on. On the Birds’ next possession, Detmer moved the offense to the SF 7, where, when faced with a 3rd & 1 situation, the 49ers blitzed again. This time, MLB Ken Norton came up the middle and forced Detmer to throw the ball away. But Norton got enough of Detmer’s throwing arm that the ball fluttered and was intercepted by CB Marquez Pope in the end zone. Just before the half, the Eagles came up empty once again when, at the SF 5, a Detmer pass intended for WR Chris T. Jones was picked off by DE Roy Barker. On Philadelphia’s first pos-session of the second half, misfortune struck once again as Detmer was forced to exit the game after sustaining a pulled hamstring when sacked by DT Bryant Young. Mark Rypien, seeing action for only the second time in ’96, took over the QB reins for the remain-der of the contest. The only scoring in the second half came midway through the third quarter when Young capped off a 61-yd drive with a 3-yd TD strike to WR Jerry Rice for a 14-0 lead. A 36-yd Young-to-Rice connection set up the TD. Strong defense by both clubs and poor weather conditions dominated the last stanza. On the games’ final play, 49er SS Tim McDonald closed out the game and the Birds’ 1996 season by intercepting Mark Rypien’s “Hail Mary” pass.

In their first postseason game since 1996, the Eagles dominated Tampa Bay on both offense and defense and rang in the year 2001 with a 21-3 Wild Card Playoff victory on New Year’s Eve. QB Don-ovan McNabb, in his first playoff start, accounted for all three TDs (two passing and one rushing) and found 10 different receivers while hitting on 73 percent of his passes behind the ferocious play of his offensive line. Meanwhile, the defense held Bucs star RB Warrick Dunn to 1 yd. rushing and denied the Bucs the end zone en route to the win … Both teams played it pretty close to the vest throughout the 1st quarter with Eagles P Sean Landeta and Bucs P Mark Royals dueling for field position. Tampa Bay struck for the first, and what turned out to be, their only points of the game when Martin Gramatica booted a 29-yd FG early in the 2nd quarter. On the Bucs next possession, the Eagles defense threw up an absolute roadblock (6 plays, -7 yds.) to shift the momentum in what had been a sluggish 1st half. On 3rd-and-19 from the TB25, DE Hugh Douglas bolted around the right end and pummeled QB Shaun King to force the ball loose. DE Mike Mamula fell on the fumble to put the offense in business at the TB 15. Five plays later McNabb scored on a 5-yd. draw play to give the Eagles a 7-3 lead, one that they would not re-linquish. Philadelphia’s defense forced a quick 3-and-out to put the ball back in McNabb’s hands with under two minutes to play in the half. The Eagles offense cruised 69 yds. in 8 plays on the strength of McNabb’s arm (5 of 7 for 63 yds.) as the drive culminated with a 5-yd. TD pass to WR Na Brown in the back corner of the end zone for a 14-3 half time lead. RB Brian Mitchell, coming in for an injured Stanley Pritchett, became the go-to guy on the drive with 3 catches for 33 yds. Throughout the 1st half, the Eagles were slowly wearing down the Bucs on both sides of the ball. The offense took the open-ing possession of the 2nd half and traveled 59 yds. to set up David Akers for a 36-yd. FG. Though he pushed it wide right through a swirling wind, the Eagles had managed to chew up 7:45 of the 3rd quarter. And when the Eagles defense forced the Bucs to punt after just six plays, their only offensive snaps of the quarter, that brought an already tired Tampa Bay defense back on the field. This time the Eagles responded with a 9-play, 57-yd. scoring drive that featured the tough running of RB Chris Warren and a 2-yd. TD strike to TE Jeff Thomason from McNabb to finish the scoring.

On the doorstep of the NFC Championship, the Eagles season came to an end at Giants Stadium with a 20-10 defeat to their NFC East rivals to the north. The Giants, on the strength of Ron Dixon’s open-ing kickoff return for a TD and CB Jason Sehorn’s INT return for a TD, beat Philadelphia for a third time this season … Playing in their first divisional playoff game since 1995, the Eagles got off to an inauspicious start when Dixon took the opening kickoff and raced 97 yds. for a TD. Faced with an uphill climb just 17 seconds into the game, the Eagles looked to have their first first down of the contest late in the opening quarter when McNabb hit WR Torrance Small. But in his fight to gain extra yardage, Small was stripped of the ball by FS Shaun Williams and CB Dave Thomas snatched the ball out of the air at the PE34. Philadelphia’s defense tightened and forced a 37-yd. FG by Brad Daluiso as the Giants increased their lead to 10-0 at the beginning of the 2nd quarter. The Eagles defense turned New York away once again in Eagles territory on their next possession as DT Hollis Thomas recovered RB Ron Dayne’s fumble at the PE28. The turnover parade between the two teams contin-ued a few series later. Following a sack and forced fumble by DE Michael Strahan, DE Cedric Jones recovered the ball and put the Giants offense in business at the PE27. However three plays later, FS Damon Moore jarred the ball loose from RB Tiki Barber and recovered the fumble at the PE14. Yet, four plays later this time, Sehorn somehow rolled on the ground while defending a pass to Small, tipped the ball to himself for the INT, jumped up and darted 32-yds. for the TD. Trailing 17-0 with under two minutes to play in the half, the Eagles needed to put some points on the board before halftime. After RB Brian Mitchell returned the ensuing kickoff 34-yds. to the 50-yd. line, Philadelphia marched 40 yds. in 7 plays to set up a 28-yd. FG by David Akers. Midway through the 3rd quarter, the Eagles were handed a golden opportunity to get back in the game that their tenacious defense had kept so close. WR Amani Toomer fielded Sean Landeta’s booming 53-yd. punt in Giants territory, but Moore punched the ball out and LS Mike Bartrum came up with the ball at the bottom of the pile to give the Eagles offense a shot at the NYG32. However, Akers pushed his 30-yd. FG wide right and the score remained 17-3 as the quarter came to an end. The Gi-ants opened the final quarter with a 13-play, 88-yd. drive that ended with a 25-yd. FG by Brad Daluiso. With less than three minutes left, Jason Bostic blocked Brad Maynard’s punt and returned it to the NYG10. Three plays later, McNabb hit Small with a quick pass on the line of scrimmage and Small bolted into the end zone to cut the Giants lead in half, at 20-10. Akers’ onside kick attempt was gobbled up by the Giants and brought an end to the Eagles season.

In their finest all-around performance of the 2001 season, the Phil-adelphia Eagles dominated the Tampa Bay Buccaneers for the sec-ond straight postseason and cruised to a 31-9 victory in an NFC Wild Card game at Veterans Stadium. The Eagles used a physical brand of football, controlling the line of scrimmage on both sides of the football stifling the Bucs running attack (24-63-2.6), while amass-ing 148 yards on the ground offensively. Donovan McNabb threw for 194 yards and 2 TDs and rushed for 57 more while frustrating the Bucs defense all day long. His 39-yard jaunt in the 1st quarter led to a 26-yard field goal by David Akers that tied the score at 3-3. After stopping the Bucs on a 3rd-and-1 running play by Warrick Dunn late in the 1st quarter, the Eagles took over at their own 27 and proceeded to take the lead for good on a 5-play, 73-yard drive. On that drive, McNabb completed all four of his pass attempts, in-cluding a 41-yarder to WR Todd Pinkston and a 16-yarder to TE Chad Lewis for a TD. On both of those plays, McNabb showed a considerable amount of poise as he eluded danger in the pocket and scrambled before unloading the ball. After a FG by the Bucs Martin Gramatica cut the lead to 10-6, McNabb connected with RB Duce Staley on a 23-yard screen pass for another TD with under one minute remaining in the 1st half. Another FG by Gramatica as time expired in the half cut the Eagles lead to 17-9. However, Phil-adelphia took a commanding lead midway through the 3rd quarter as RB Correll Buckhalter broke four tackles, rumbling 25 yards for a TD. On the ensuing possession, CB Troy Vincent snuffed a Bucs scoring attempt by making a highlight-film, over-the-shoulder INT in the end zone. It was one of four 2nd half INTs by the Eagles off Brad Johnson. SS Damon Moore had two of those INTs, including a 59-yard return for a TD that finished off the scoring.

NOTES: The 22-point margin of victory was the highest in the club’s postseason history … Moore’s two interceptions tied the team’s postseason record and his 59-yard return for a score was the lon-gest in the club’s postseason history. His effort earned him NFL Defensive Player of the Week honors.

The Philadelphia Eagles advanced to the NFC Championship game for the first time in 21 years with a convincing 33-19 win at Chicago. Donovan McNabb, a product of Mt. Carmel High School in Chicago, had a remarkable homecoming parade up and down Soldier Field, throwing for 262 yards and 2 touchdowns and running for another score as the Eagles compiled 336 yards of total offense vs. the Bears vaunted defense. The Eagles defense, meanwhile, held RB Anthony Thomas, the NFL’s Offensive Rookie of the Year, to just 36 rushing yards on 15 attempts and the entire Bears offense to 184 total yards and 10 first downs. This game also featured some bone-crunching physical play, none more crucial than the block by DE Hugh Douglas that knocked out Bears QB Jim Miller with a sep-arated shoulder after an interception by SS Damon Moore early in the 2nd stanza. At the time of that interception, the Eagles held a 6-0 lead after a pair of field goals by David Akers in the first quarter. Midway through the 2nd quarter, the Bears got on the board with an end around by Ahmad Merritt, who took the handoff by back-up QB Shane Matthews and raced 47 yards for a TD. Down 7-6, the Eagles stormed right back with an 11-play, 69-yard drive capped off by a 13-yard TD pass from McNabb to FB Cecil Martin with just 25 seconds remaining until halftime. The Bears used another big play to recapture the lead early in the 3rd quarter as McNabb had a pass intended for WR James Thrash deflected by CB R.W. McQuarters and then intercepted by Jerry Azumah, who scampered 39 yards down the sideline for a TD. McNabb and the Eagles bounced back later in the quarter after a 15-yard punt by Brad Maynard that set them up at the CB36. Facing a 3rd-and-14 at the CB40, McNabb completed a pass to TE Jeff Thomason, who hurdled a would-be tackler and ran 30 yards for a first down. Two plays later, McNabb connected with RB Duce Staley on a diving 6-yd. TD pass. After a FG by Paul Edinger that cut the lead to 20-17 early in the 4th quarter, the Eagles rebounded with a 40-yd. FG by Akers and then forced a fumble on the ensuing kickoff with a crunching hit by Tim Hauck that Quinton Caver recovered. Akers then nailed a 46-yard FG to give Philadelphia a comfortable nine-point lead with 6:33 remaining in regulation. An interception by former Bears draft choice Rashard Cook late in the 4th set up a 5-yard TD run by McNabb that sealed the win. The TD by McNabb, a Bears fan growing up, was the last at Soldier Field, which will be reconstructed for the start of the 2003 season.

NOTES: The Eagles won a road playoff game for the first time since 1/3/93 (at New Orleans) and a divisional playoff game for the first time since 1/3/81 (vs. Minnesota) … Akers four field goals tied the club’s postseason record for a single game and his 46 yarder was the longest in the team’s playoff history … Thomason’s 30-yard catch was a career long … The Eagles interior offensive line (Gs Jermane Mayberry and John Welbourn and C Hank Fraley) held the Bears monstrous DT duo of Keith Traylor and Ted Washington to just four tackles while the Eagles unit rushed 27 times for 112 yards before the final kneel downs by McNabb and the safety by P Sean Landeta.

The Eagles 2001 season came to end in St. Louis with a 29-24 loss to the Rams in the NFC Championship game. The Eagles battled toe-to-toe with the high-powered Rams and overcame adversity early in the contest, but fell short on their final possession late in the 4th quarter. Down by 12 points with just under 7 minutes to play in the game, the Eagles would not give up easily as Brian Mitchell returned a kickoff 41 yards to the SL48. Facing a 4th-and-7, Don-ovan McNabb connected with TE Chad Lewis for a clutch 11-yard catch to move the chains and keep their hopes alive. On 1st-and-goal at the StL3, McNabb rolled out and looked to throw for the score, but ended up barreling his way into the end zone to slash the Rams lead to 29-24 with 2:56 remaining in regulation. After forcing the Rams to punt with some tough defense, the Eagles narrowly missed a blocked punt as DE N.D. Kalu barely missed John Baker’s boot. Facing a 3rd-and-7 at their own 48-yard line, McNabb threw an incompletion to WR Freddie Mitchell and then was intercepted on the 4th down play by Aeneas Williams, who stepped in front of Mitchell to seal the Rams victory. In almost a mirror image of their first meeting in week one, the Eagles offense started with a deadly turnover on their first possession that resulted in a 7-0 Rams lead. This time McNabb fumbled on the 2nd play from scrimmage and the loose ball was pounced on by Rams DT Brian Young at the PE21. Five plays later, Kurt Warner found WR Isaac Bruce on a five-yard TD play to give the Rams the early lead. The Eagles rebounded on the ensuing possession with a 46-yard FG by David Akers. But the Rams answered that with a 27-yd FG of their own by Jeff Wilkins that built a 10-3 lead heading into the 2nd quarter. Those 15 min-utes belonged to the Eagles as they put up 14 points to take a 17-13 lead at the half. RB Correll Buckhalter’s 31-yard scamper set up a 1-yard TD run by fellow RB Duce Staley. After a Rams field goal, McNabb got going in the 2-minute offense, hitting WR Todd Pink-ston with a 12-yard TD pass with 46 seconds left on the clock. But the Rams came out storming in the 2nd half, using Marshall Faulk on their first seven plays from scrimmage (7-27 rushing) to set up another FG by Wilkins. After a three-and-out by the Eagles, Warner and Faulk marched the Rams down the field and again recaptured the lead with a 1-yard scoring plunge by Faulk. Their two-point con-version attempt failed and the scored remained 22-17 heading into the final 15 minutes of play. Early in that quarter, Faulk seemingly put the game out of reach with another 1-yard TD run. From there, the heroic comeback attempt by the Eagles fell short and gave the Rams their 2nd Super Bowl berth in the last three years.

NOTES: The Eagles made their first appearance in the NFC Cham-pionship game since 1980 … Troy Vincent battled a severe groin in-jury during the week to start, but left during the third quarter after re-aggravating the injury and did not return … SS Damon Moore tore the ACL in his knee in the 4th quarter and did not return ... Staley scored a TD in his third straight postseason game ... After going 6-50 rushing in the first half, RB Correll Buckhalter sprained and ankle and did not return.

The Eagles advanced to the NFC Championship for the 2nd straight season with a 20-6 win over the visiting Atlanta Falcons. Donovan McNabb returned to action for the first time in nearly two months after a suffering a broken ankle on November 17 and completed 67% of his passes for 247 yards and a touchdown. McNabb also displayed his mobility on his 2nd play from scrimmage, dashing out of the pocket for a 19-yard running play. Although the Eagles did not score on that drive, they did light the scoreboard quickly thereafter. On the Falcons next possession, Eagles cornerback Bobby Taylor snared a Michael Vick aerial at the Falcons 39-yard line and scooted into the end zone for a 7-0 lead. The Eagles de-fense harassed Vick all day long, sacking him 3 times, intercepting him twice, and limiting him to just 30 yards rushing on 6 attempts. Later in the first quarter, McNabb converted two big gains with his arm – a 15 yarder to Chad Lewis and a 24 yarder to Todd Pinkston – to set up a 34-yard field goal by David Akers. Eagles DT Corey Simon stopped smothered another Falcons drive after halting Fal-cons RB T.J. Duckett on a 3rd-and-1 rushing attempt. McNabb con-nected with James Thrash on a 42-yard pass play to set up another Akers field goal to give Philadelphia a 13-0 lead. Vick orchestrated two long scoring drives that ended in field goals to finish the first half at 13-6. The third quarter was marred by a pair of missed field goals as Akers nailed the upright on a 51-yard attempt and Falcons kicker Jay Feely misfired on a 37-yard attempt. After the Eagles held the Falcons on a drive early in the 4th, McNabb embarked on a crucial drive with 12:08 to play at their own 25-yard line. McNabb completed key third down passes to running backs Dorsey Levens (17 yards) and Brian Westbrook (13 yards) as the Eagles drove into Falcons territory. But the Eagles could not convert a third-and-one situation at the Falcons 35. With 6:34 to play and a strong wind howling in their faces, Eagles head coach Andy Reid decided to go for it. Not only did they convert the first down, Thrash hauled in a 10-yard completion from McNabb, eluded Falcons cornerback Ray Buchanan, and raced the final 25 yards into the end zone. Armed with a 20-6 lead, the Eagles defense finished exactly how they started – with an interception. This time by FS Brian Dawkins who put the finishing touches on a defensive masterpiece.

The Eagles came up short in the NFC Championship game for the second straight season as they fell to the visiting Tampa Bay Buc-caneers, 27-10, in the final football game ever at Veterans Stadium. The Vet was rocking early on as Brian Mitchell took the opening kickoff 70 yards to the TB26. Two plays later, Duce Staley raced 20 yards for a touchdown giving the Eagles a 7-0 lead just 52 seconds into the game. However, the Bucs responded on the ensuing pos-session with a 48-yard field goal by Martin Gramatica. Later in the first quarter, Eagles CB Bobby Taylor snared a pass by Brad John-son inside Bucs territory. The Eagles could not respond with points and instead pinned the Bucs inside the 5-yard line on a pooch punt by Lee Johnson. Tampa Bay did get some breathing room and faced a 3rd-and-2 situation at their own 24 when Johnson connected with WR Joe Jurevicius on a 71-yard catch-and-run down to the PE5. Two plays later, Bucs RB Mike Alstott plunged in from one yard out to give them a 10-7 lead. The Eagles tied the game in the second quarter with a 30-yard field goal by David Akers, but Tampa Bay used a 9-yard scoring pass from Brad Johnson to Keyshawn John-son late in the 2nd quarter to take the lead for good. The Eagles offense struggled to get on track throughout most of the 2nd half as the Bucs took a 20-10 lead into the fourth quarter. Down by 10, Donovan McNabb and the Eagles moved deep into Bucs territory with under four minutes to play and threatened to shift the momen-tum back in their favor. But Tampa Bay CB Ronde Barber stepped in front of a McNabb pass and raced 92 yards for a score that ended the Eagles comeback attempt.

NOTES: Prior to the game, honorary captain Wilbert Montgomery took a handoff from Ron Jaworski in a re-enactment of his 42-yard TD run in the 1980 NFC Championship game win over Dallas … Mc-Nabb moved past Ron Jaworski and into first place on the club’s all-time list postseason list for attempts (248), completion (150), yards (1,459) … With kickoff returns of 70 and 43 yards, Mitchell had the longest and 3rd longest KORs in Eagles post-season history.

It was simply an instant classic. In the first ever playoff game at Lincoln Financial Field, the Eagles roared back from a 14-0 deficit in the first quarter and a 17-14 deficit in the final minutes of regu-lation to defeat the Packers, 20-17, in overtime. David Akers booted a 37-yard field goal with 0:05 remaining in the 4th quarter to tie the game and then nailed a 31-yard kick in overtime to win the con-test. With the Packers holding a 3-point lead late in the 4th quar-ter and driving, the Eagles stopped Packers QB Brett Favre 1-yard shy on what would have been a critical first down with 2:39 left on the clock. The Eagles took over at their own 20-yard line after a punt and embarked on a dramatic game-tying drive. After a 22-yard carry by Duce Staley got the offense going, Donovan McNabb and the Eagles seemed to stall on their next set of downs, facing a 4th-and-26 situation at their own 26. But McNabb connected with WR Freddie Mitchell for a dramatic 28-yard gain over the middle to give the Eagles another breath of life. They then faced a 3rd-and-7 at the GB29 with a stiff breeze blowing in their face. McNabb calmly found Todd Pinkston for a 10-yard gain with 25 seconds remaining. After two incomplete passes in the end zone, the Eagles settled for the tie and overtime as Akers drilled the field goal. In overtime, the Eagles won the toss, but stalled on their opening possession, giving Favre and the Packers a shot to win. On their first play from scrimmage, Favre tossed a long pass downfield intended for Javon Walker. It ended up in the waiting hands of Eagles FS Brian Daw-kins, who raced back to the GB34. Six plays later, Akers ended up back on the field with a chance to win the game and he did not disappoint the frenzied home crowd. That same crowd was very docile in the early going as Favre and the Packers mounted a 14-0 lead in the first quarter on a pair of TD passes to Robert Ferguson. The Eagles managed to get on the board midway through the 2nd quarter as McNabb and Pinkston connected on a 45-yard pass play to the GB7. That play set the stage for a 7-yard shovel pass for a TD to Staley. On their ensuing possession, Green Bay threatened to add to their lead as they set up shop with a first and goal at the Eagles four-yard line. After an incomplete pass, the Eagles twice stopped Packers RB Najeh Davenport short of the goal line to set up a 4th and goal at the PE1. This time, RB Ahman Green was halted for no gain to cap off a dramatic goal line stand. The Eagles finally drew even on the first play of the 4th quarter as McNabb eluded defensive lineman Kabeer Gbaja-Biamila and Cletidus Hunt to free himself in time to fire a strike to Pinkston from 12 yards out. The Packers drove inside the Eagles 5-yard line once again in the 4th quarter, but managed just a field goal by Ryan Longwell to give the Packers their final lead at 17-14.

NOTES: McNabb set an NFL playoff record for most rushing yards by a quarterback (11-107) ... Staley and Chad Lewis overtook Keith Byars and Harold Carmichael (29) for most catches in Eagles play-off history … McNabb became the Eagles all-time leader in career touchdown passes during the postseason … The Eagles played without Pro Bowl CB Troy Vincent (hip injury).

The Carolina Panthers took advantage of four interceptions (three by rookie CB Ricky Manning, Jr.) and an injury to Eagles quarter-back Donovan McNabb to earn their first Super Bowl appearance by defeating the Eagles, 14-3. As a result, the Eagles dropped their third consecutive NFC Championship Game. Late in the 2nd quar-ter, McNabb suffered a rib injury after a questionable hit by LB Greg Favors, who pounced on McNabb after a sack by Mike Rucker. Al-though he missed one play at the time, McNabb fought through the injury until early in the 4th quarter when he was replaced by Koy Detmer for the remainder of the contest. At the time of McNabb’s injury the Eagles trailed 7-0 after a 24-yard touchdown pass from Jake Delhomme to Muhsin Muhammad early in the 2nd quarter. On the drive McNabb was injured, the Eagles eventually got on the scoreboard with a 41-yard field goal by David Akers. Later in that quarter, an injured McNabb threw the first of his three intercep-tions, thwarting a chance to get some points on the board before halftime. On their first possession of the 2nd half, the Eagles used the run game to march to the Panthers 18-yard line, but an inter-ception by Manning stopped a scoring opportunity. After the Ea-gles defense forced another punt, Eagles WR James Thrash was thumped by safety Mike Minter after a catch, but the ball was jarred loose and ended up in the hands of Manning, who returned it to the Eagles 37. Five plays later, RB DeShaun Foster made the Eagles pay as he broke three tackles en route to a one-yard TD run, giving the Panthers a commanding 14-3 lead. McNabb played two more series before giving way to Detmer, who led a drive to the Panthers 11-yard line with 5:22 remaining. But Carolina LB Dan Morgan in-tercepted a pass that all but ended the Eagles comeback hopes.

NOTES: With 384 career postseason rushing yards, RB Duce Staley moved past Steve Van Buren (365) and Donovan McNabb (327) to move into 2nd place on the club’s all-time list. Staley had 112 total yards from scrimmage.

In their fifth straight appearance in the NFC Divisional playoff game, the Eagles scored touchdowns on three of their first four drives and held Minnesota’s potent offense to just 7 points through the first 57 minutes of the game, as they defeated the Vikings, 27-14, at Lincoln Financial Field. Donovan McNabb completed 21 of 33 passes for 286 yards and 2 scores, Brian Westbrook registered 117 total yards from scrimmage, and Freddie Mitchell hauled in 5 passes for 65 yards and posted two scores (one receiving, one fumble recovery) to lead an impressive offensive attack. On the Eagles 2nd possession of the game, McNabb’s 2-yard touchdown pass to Mitchell opened the scoring early in the first quarter. On the final play of the quarter, McNabb connected with WR Greg Lewis on a 52-yard completion on a 3rd-and-5 play. That set up a 7-yard TD pass from McNabb to Westbrook. The Vikings cut the Eagles lead to 14-7 after Daunte Culpepper scored on a 7-yard run, but Philadelphia bounced right back with a bizarre scoring play on their next drive. TE L.J. Smith caught a pass from McNabb deep inside Vikings territory, but was forced to fumble by Minnesota CB Antoine Winfield. The ball popped up in the air and into the end zone, where Mitchell grabbed it for another touchdown. Late in the 2nd quarter, Minnesota blew a scoring chance after being set up with a first and goal opportunity at the Eagles 8-yard line. On 4th down, the Vikings faked a field goal as holder Gus Frerotte threw an incomplete pass. The Eagles marched right back down the field on their ensuing possession, but ran out of time after a completion to Dorsey Levens at the 4-yard line. The Eagles defense preserved the 21-7 halftime lead in the 3rd quarter as linebackers Ike Reese and Jeremiah Trotter each inter-cepted Daunte Culpepper. After Trotter’s INT, the Eagles appeared to score on the next play as Mitchell took a pass from McNabb and raced 31 yards, but fumbled as he stretched for the end zone. An official review of the play confirmed the ball went out of the end zone for a touchback. Culpepper and the Vikings were thwarted on their next possession, however, as FS Brian Dawkins sacked Cul-pepper to take Minnesota out of field goal range and forced them to throw out of the end zone on 4th-and-22. The Eagles added two short field goals by David Akers (21 and 23 yards) in the 4th quarter to take a 27-7 lead.

NOTES: Akers has posted a field goal in his last nine playoff games ... Under Andy Reid, the Eagles have a 9-0 record (3-0 in the play-offs) in games following a bye week and have compiled a 4-1 record in the Divisional playoff round … The victory represented the 70th overall of Reid’s career … Reese’s interception snapped a string of 131 pass attempts by Culpepper without an INT … Mitchell’s 2nd TD was the first fumble recovery for a score in Eagles postseason history.

The Eagles earned their first trip to the Super Bowl in 24 seasons as they upended the Atlanta Falcons, 27-10, at a frigid Lincoln Fi-nancial Field in Philadelphia. One day after more than a foot of snow pounded the Philadelphia area, the Eagles defense blanketed Fal-cons quarterback Michael Vick throughout the game, limiting him to just 162 yards (136 passing, 26 rushing), while sacking him four times in a wind chill that reached single digits. The Eagles took an early 7-0 lead as Dorsey Levens used an extra effort to score on a 4-yard TD run. The Falcons answered back with a 17-play, 64-yard drive that resulted in a 23-yard field goal by Jay Feely. On that drive, Atlanta was set up with a first and goal at the Eagles 2-yard line, but DT Hollis Thomas came up with a sack and a tackle for a loss to force the field goal attempt. Facing a 3rd-and-11 situation on Philadelphia’s next possession, Donovan McNabb scrambled away from rushers and fired a 13-yard completion to Freddie Mitchell. One play later, McNabb connected with Greg Lewis on a 45-yard completion down to the Falcons 4-yard line, setting up a 3-yard TD pass from McNabb to TE Chad Lewis, who just barely kept both feet in bounds. But the Falcons responded again with a 10-yard TD run by Warrick Dunn to make the score 14-10 heading into halftime. The Eagles drove 60 yards on the opening drive of the 3rd quarter, leading to a 31-yard field goal by David Akers. RB Brian Westbrook accounted for 48 yards on that possession and totaled 135 yards from scrimmage on 21 touches in the game. After an interception by Brian Dawkins late in the 3rd quarter, Akers added another field goal (34 yards) to build a 20-10 advantage. The Eagles defense ha-rassed Vick and the Falcons in the 2nd half, limiting them to no points, 86 total yards, and 3 first downs. Philadelphia sealed their trip to Super Bowl XXXIX with a 2-yard TD connection between Mc-Nabb and Chad Lewis.

NOTES: Eagles DE Derrick Burgess’ 2-sack performance was the 2nd ever by an Eagle in the playoffs (Hugh Douglas vs. TB in 2000) … Akers has posted a field goal in his last 10 playoff games ... Chad Lewis moved past Duce Staley (35) and into first place on the Ea-gles all-time reception list in the postseason. Lewis’ 2-TD perfor-mance was the 6th such performance in the team’s playoff history … Dawkins interception was the 4th of his playoff career, trailing only Herman Edwards (5) on the team’s all-time playoff list. He also tied Bobby Taylor (12) for most postseason games played in an Eagle uniform … Former all-pro quarterback Randall Cunningham served as Philadelphia’s honorary captain at the coin toss.

In their first Super Bowl appearance in 24 years, the Eagles were decimated by four turnovers, including three in their opponent’s territory, as they fell to the defending champion Patriots, 24-21, at ALLTEL Stadium in Jacksonville. The victory by New England rep-resented their 3rd world championship in a span of four years. The Eagles, who welcomed the return of Pro Bowl WR Terrell Owens to the lineup, outgained the Patriots, 369-331, but could not convert valuable scoring opportunities early in the game. Owens accounted for 122 of those yards on 9 catches, after courageously returning from a serious ankle surgery just six-and-a-half weeks prior. Phil-adelphia moved the ball well early in the first half as they marched to the Patriots 8-yard line late in the first quarter. But a 16-yard sack by LB Mike Vrabel and an interception by SS Rodney Harrison at the 3-yard line thwarted a valuable scoring attempt. Later in the first quarter, Eagles TE L.J. Smith fumbled at the Patriots 38-yard line to stop another potential scoring drive. The Eagles did recover to take a 7-0 lead early in the 2nd quarter as Donovan McNabb connected with Smith on a 6-yard strike. That play capped off an impressive 9-play, 81-yard drive that was highlighted by a 40-yard connection from McNabb to WR Todd Pinkston. On the ensuing possession, the Patriots drove to the PE4, before Tom Brady fum-bled a hand off attempt. Eagles DT Darwin Walker recovered the loose ball. But New England regained possession late in the 2nd quarter and this time scored on a 4-yard completion from Brady to WR David Givens to tie the score at 7-7 heading into the locker room. New England took the lead on the first possession of the 3rd quarter as Brady converted two 3rd-and-long situations en route to a 2-yard TD toss to Vrabel. The Eagles bounced back later in the 3rd stanza as McNabb and the offense drove 74 yards on 10 plays, leading to a 10-yard TD catch by Brian Westbrook. Tied at 14 head-ing into the fourth quarter, the Patriots scored 10 points in a span of 5 minutes to take a 24-14 lead. McNabb was then intercepted by LB Tedy Bruschi at the Pats 24-yard line, hurting their comeback attempt. But WR Greg Lewis hauled in a 30-yard TD reception from McNabb with 1:55 remaining to give the Eagles life. An unsuccess-ful onside kick attempt and another interception by Harrison ended the Eagles season.

Notes: Both teams were tied at the conclusion of the 3rd quarter for the first time in Super Bowl history … McNabb’s 357 passing yards were tied for the 3rd highest total in SB history. His 51 pass attempts were the 2nd-most ever (58 by Jim Kelly in SB26) and his 30 completions were the 3rd most … Owens’ 9 catches were tied for the 8th-most in SB history … Eagles DE Derrick Burgess’ sack of Brady was the 4th of his Eagles playoff career, tying him with Reggie White and Hugh Douglas for 1st on the club’s all-time list.

David Akers booted a 38-yard field goal, his third of the game, as time expired to give the Philadelphia Eagles a thrilling, 23-20 vic-tory over the New York Giants in a Wild Card playoff game at Lin-coln Financial Field. It was the second time in his career that Akers nailed a game-winning field goal in the postseason, with the other coming vs. Green Bay on January 11, 2004. Akers’ heroics came after a valiant comeback attempt by the Giants, who trailed 20-10 heading into the fourth quarter. After Jay Feely’s 24-yard field goal pulled the Giants within seven points early in that quarter, Eli Man-ning led New York on a 13-play, 80-yard drive that culminated in an 11-yard touchdown pass to Plaxico Burress to tie the score at 20 with just over 5 minutes remaining in regulation. However, the Eagles rode the legs of RB Brian Westbrook (33 yards rushing on the possession) to drive 46 yards in 10 plays, setting up Akers’ game winning attempt. Westbrook, who was bothered by a stomach virus throughout the day, rushed for a career-high 141 yards on 20 car-ries. His 49-yard touchdown run early in the 2nd quarter tied the score at 7-7, after Burress opened the scoring with a 17-yard TD grab from Manning on their first possession of the contest. The two teams traded field goals (a 19-yarder by Akers and a 20-yarder by Feely) in the 2nd quarter before the Eagles took the lead with a 28-yard scoring pass from Jeff Garcia to Donté Stallworth with 1:01 remaining in the half. Akers booted an Eagles playoff record long 48-yard field goal late in the 3rd quarter to up the Eagles lead to 10 points.

Notes: Westbrook’s 49-yard touchdown scamper became the lon-gest scoring run in Eagles postseason history … Giants RB Tiki Bar-ber, who announced his retirement earlier in the year, concluded his career with a 26-137 rushing performance … Eagles CB Sheldon Brown registered his first career postseason interception … Fellow Eagles CB Lito Sheppard left the game with a dislocated elbow … In their first career playoff games, Eagles WR Reggie Brown posted 7 catches for 73 yards and Stallworth hauled in three catches and his first career postseason touchdown.

In a strangely similar rematch of their regular season encounter on October 15, the Eagles dropped a 27-24 decision to the New Orleans Saints in an NFC Divisional playoff game at the Louisiana Super-dome. As a result, the Eagles had their six-game winning streak (including one playoff game) snapped. Deuce McAllister rushed for 143 yards and accounted for two key touchdowns in the 2nd half to lead the Saints back from an eight-point deficit en route to their first-ever berth in the NFC Championship game. Like their previous meeting, New Orleans struck first on the scoreboard with a pair of field goals by John Carney. But the Eagles rebounded after a slow start on offense with a 75-yard scoring play from Jeff Garcia to Donté Stallworth to give them a 7-6 lead early in the 2nd quar-ter. That play was the longest offensive play in Eagles postseason history, surpassing a 66-yard TD pass from Randall Cunningham to Keith Jackson in an NFC Wild Card game vs. Washington in 1991. The Saints responded on their next possession with a 14-play, 78-yard drive that resulted in a four-yard TD run by rookie RB Reggie Bush. Philadelphia retook the lead with a lengthy drive of their own at the end of the first half, as they traveled 80 yards in 11 plays to take the lead with a one-yard plunge by Brian Westbrook. Holding a one-point advantage heading into the third quarter, the Eagles stormed to a 21-13 lead with a 62-yard touchdown scam-per by Westbrook, just 1:35 into the 3rd quarter. McAllister scored on a five-yard touchdown run and an 11-yard TD catch from Drew Brees on consecutive possessions in the third quarter to give New Orleans a 27-21 advantage heading into the final stanza. The Ea-gles responded with a drive deep into Saints territory and faced a 2nd-and-1 situation at the 4-yard line before a rushing attempt by Westbrook and a pass to FB Thomas Tapeh were stopped. The Eagles settled for a 24-yard field goal by David Akers to get within three points with just over 11 minutes to play in the game. Each team traded 3-and-out possessions before the Saints embarked on a drive into Eagles territory with under 4 minutes to play. But a fumbled pitch attempt from Brees to Bush resulted in a recovery by DE Darren Howard and a new life for the Eagles at their own 44-yard line. But a 4th-and-10 pass completion for a first down to WR Hank Baskett was nullified by a false start penalty by RG Scott Young, who replaced an injured Shawn Andrews (neck) in the 2nd half. The Eagles chose to punt away on the next play and never regained possession as McAllister rumbled for a first down as the clock ran out on the Eagles, as it did in their October 15th contest at New Orleans, and their 2006 campaign.

Notes: Westbrook’s 62-yard TD scamper was the longest rushing play in Eagles postseason history, surpassing Wilbert Montgom-ery’s 55-yard run vs. Dallas in the 1981 NFC Championship game. Westbrook became just the second Eagle to register two rushing touchdowns in a single playoff game, joining Montgomery, who did it twice. Westbrook also became the first Eagle to register back-to-back 100-yard rushing games in team playoff history … DT Darwin Walker tied a team playoff record with 2 sacks in a single playoff game (DE’s Hugh Douglas and Derrick Burgess previously accom-plished that feat).

Donovan McNabb threw for 300 yards and one touchdown, while the Eagles defense pitched a 2nd half shutout to defeatthe Minnesota Vikings, 26-14, in an NFC Wild Card game at theMetrodome. Even though the outside temperature at kickoffwas just 4 degrees, the Eagles heated up the dome with somegame-changing big plays. First, DeSean Jackson returned apunt 62 yards in the first quarter to set up a 43-yard field goalby David Akers and a 3-0 lead. Later in the quarter, Akersboomed a franchise playoff record 51-yard field goal to givethe Eagles a 6-0 advantage. After withstanding a 40-yard TDrun by Adrian Peterson early the 2nd quarter, Philadelphiaresponded with another field goal by Akers (31 yards) and a44-yard interception return for a touchdown by CB AsanteSamuel, giving the visitors a 16-7 advantage late in the firsthalf. But the Vikings responded on the ensuing possession, driving 64 yards on 9 plays to set up Peterson’s 3-yard TDscamper. Carrying that 16-14 advantage into the 4th quarter, the Eagles resorted to their top two playmakers on offense toseal the victory. Starting a drive on their 29 yard line with 6:53to play, McNabb connected with RB Brian Westbrook on ascreen pass. Westbrook picked up a caravan of big blocksalong the way as he raced 71 yards to the end zone, givingPhiladelphia a nine-point lead. From there, the Eagles defensefinished the story, harassing Vikings QB Tarvaris Jackson intoa three-and-out and a fumble on their next two possessions. The fumble recovery by Eagles DE Juqua Parker set up Akers’4th field goal of the day to set the final score at 26-14.

Notes: Under head coach Andy Reid, the Eagles have a 4-0record in Wild Card games … Samuel’s interception return fora touchdown was the fourth of his playoff career, breaking Hallof Famer Willie Brown’s NFL record … The four field goals byAkers tied a team playoff record previously set by he and LuisZendejas … Westbrook’s TD catch was the 2nd longest in teamplayoff history (Jeff Garcia and Donte Stallworth connected ona 75 yarder in a NFC Divisional playoff game at New Orleans onJanuary 13, 2007). His touchdown was the 6th of his playoffcareer, tying Wilbert Montgomery and Harold Carmichael forfirst place in club history … Jackson’s 62-yard punt return wasthe second longest in Eagles postseason history, behind BoshPritchard’s 79-yard touchdown return on 12/21/47 vs. theSteelers. His 105 total punt return yards were the most in anEagles postseason game since Pritchard’s 101 in that samegame … In his first career playoff game, Eagles P Sav Roccadowned all four of his punts inside the Vikings 20-yard lineand allowed only one punt return yard (44.0 net average).

Philadelphia advanced to the NFC Championship game with ahard-fought victory over the defending Super Bowl ChampionNew York Giants at the Meadowlands. The Eagles did not allowthe Giants to reach the end zone all day as their defense tightenedup in some crucial times of the game. In fact, the Eaglesthwarted three Giants red zone opportunities by holding themto a field goal each time. In the 4th quarter, the defensestunned the home team with two stops on 4th-and-short as EliManning was stuffed on a QB sneak on 4th-and-1. One possessionlater, the Eagles stopped bruising RB Brandon Jacobsshy of a first down on a 4th-and-2 run. Donovan McNabb, meanwhile, accounted for both of Philadelphia’s touchdowns(a one-yard QB sneak in the first quarter and a one-yard TDthrow to TE Brent Celek on the first play of the 4th quarter). TheEagles first TD was set up after an interception by CB AsanteSamuel, who returned Manning’s errant pass 25 yards to theGiants 2-yard line. The Eagles took a 7-3 lead into the 2ndquarter, but were victimized by an intentional groundingpenalty in the end zone by McNabb, resulting in a safety forNew York. Down 7-5 and driving deep into the Eagles territory, the Giants settled for a 46-yard field goal attempt by JohnCarney, which sailed wide right. Late in the 2nd quarter,Carney booted a 34-yard field goal to give the Giants an 8-7advantage with 1:33 left. But McNabb directed a clutch twominutedrill that set up a 25-yard field goal by Akers as timeexpired in the first half. The Giants regained the lead early inthe 3rd quarter after McNabb was intercepted by DT FredRobbins. That play led to another Carney field goal to give thehome squad an 11-10 lead. Undaunted, the Eagles drove 58yards in 12 plays on their ensuing possession to set up a 35-yard field goal by Akers. On that drive, McNabb connectedwith WR Jason Avant for 21 yards on a 3rd-and-20 situation andwith Correll Buckhalter for a 19-yard catch and run on 3rd and10. The Giants looked to regain the lead on their next possession, but Carney’s 47-yard attempt missed wide left. Fromthere, the Eagles stormed down the field to set up Celek’s oneyardTD grab from McNabb, giving Philadelphia a 20-11 lead. The Eagles defense came up with those two key stops on 4thdown and Akers sealed the victory with a 20-yard field goal

Notes: With three field goals, Akers broke an NFL record byconnecting on his 18th consecutive field goal attempt in thepostseason. The previous record of 16 was held by formerEagle Gary Anderson … Andy Reid became the 14th coach inNFL history to register 10 playoff wins … Samuel’s interception, the 7th of his postseason career, ties him with formerPatriots teammate Rodney Harrison for most among activeplayers … The Eagles did not allow a sack to the Giants in threecontests this year … Brian Westbrook surpassed WilbertMontgomery (518) for most rushing yards in team playoff history.

After a spectacular comeback in the 2nd half, the Eagles fell tothe Arizona Cardinals, 32-25, in the NFC Championship gamein Glendale, Arizona. Philadelphia fell behind 24-6 by halftime, but rallied to score 19 consecutive points to take a 25-24lead with 10:45 to play in the 4th quarter. But the Cardinalsstormed back with a 14-play, 72-yard drive that produced thegame-winning, 8-yard touchdown pass from Kurt Warner to RBTim Hightower with 2:53 left. The Eagles drove into Arizonaterritory on the ensuing possession, but four straight incompletepasses ended their chances of a Super Bowl berth.Warner and WR Larry Fitzgerald propelled the Cardinals totheir first half explosion, connecting on three touchdownpasses (9, 62, and 1 yard, respectively). The Eagles, meanwhile, could only muster two field goals by David Akers as theyfell behind by 18 points at the intermission. The third quarterdid not start well for Philadelphia as Donovan McNabb lost afumble after a sack by Cards S Adrian Wilson. On their nextpossession, though, the Eagles offense finally settled downand scored on a 6-yard TD toss from McNabb to TE Brent Celek. After a three-and-out by the Cardinals, McNabb hit Celekagain on a 31-yard scoring strike that left the Eaglesdown by 24-19, after Akers misfired on the extra pointattempt. Early in the 4th quarter, the Eagles forced anotherpunt by Arizona and gave McNabb and company a chance totake the lead. Four plays later, they did just that as McNabbconnected on a deep pass to rookie WR DeSean Jackson, whomade a juggling catch away from CB Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie for a 62-yard touchdown. The two point conversionattempt failed, however, and set the stage for the Cardinalsvictory as they converted two third down conversions and oneon fourth down during their game-winning drive.

Notes: With 10 catches, Celek broke the Eagles record for mostreceptions in a playoff game (Terrell Owens and Keith Byarseach had 9). He also tied the team record with two touchdownreceptions in a playoff game previously set by Chad Lewis,Fred Barnett and Harold Carmichael … Kevin Curtis’ 122 receivingyards tied for the 2nd most in Eagles playoff history

The Eagles turned the ball over four times and were outscored 27-7 in the decisive 2nd quarter by the Cowboys in an NFC Wild Card game in Arlington, TX. For the Eagles, it was the 2nd defeat at the hands of their NFC East rivals in just six days and put an end to their 2009 season. After a scoreless first quarter, Dallas scored on the third play of the 2nd quarter as Tony Romo connected with TE John Phillips on a one-yard TD pass. That score was set up by a 40-yard pass interference penalty by Eagles CB Sheldon Brown. The Eagles responded with a 76-yard scoring pass from Michael Vick to WR Jeremy Maclin to tie the game and kept the momen-tum with an interception by S Sean Jones on the next play from scrimmage. But the play was overturned as replay showed the ball touched the ground before Jones had full possession of it. The Cow-boys promptly took advantage of the overturned call and drove 85 yards on 10 plays to take the lead for good on a one-yard TD run by Tashard Choice. Dallas added a field goal before a pair of Eagle turnovers led to 10 more points for the Cowboys as the half ended with a 27-7 deficit. Cowboys RB Felix put the game out of reach with a 73-yard TD run late in the 3rd quarter.

Notes: Vick’s 76-yard TD pass to Maclin was the longest in the team’s postseason history, besting Jeff Garcia’s 75 yarder to Donte Stallworth at New Orleans on 1/13/07 … Maclin’s 146 receiving yards were the most ever by a rookie in NFL postseason history and the most by an Eagle in the playoffs, topping TE Keith Jackson’s 142 in the “Fog Bowl” at Chicago on 12/31/88. The 21-year-old Maclin became the youngest player in NFL history to catch a touchdown pass … K David Akers played in his 18th playoff game, tying Brian Dawkins for first place on the team’s all-time list.

Despite a valiant comeback attempt in the 4th quarter, the Eagles could not overcome Aaron Rodgers’ three touchdown passes and a 123-yard rushing performance by rookie RB James Starks as the Packers ousted the Eagles from the playoffs with a 21-16 win in an NFC Wild Card game in Philadelphia. Trailing 21-10 heading into the final stanza the Eagles drove deep into Packers territory, but David Akers misfired on a 34-yard field goal attempt. After forcing a punt by the Packers, though, Michael Vick drove the Eagles 75 yards and scored on a 1-yard QB sneak to pull the Eagles within 5 points. The two-point pass attempt was caught by TE Brent Celek, but not before he illegally stepped out of the back of the end zone, nullifying the attempt. Despite the five-yard penalty and another attempt at two points, Vick was pressured and misfired as the Eagles trailed with just over 4 minutes to play. Rodgers and the Packers, however, were forced to punt as Philadelphia had one last attempt to win the game starting from their own 34-yard line with just under 2 minutes on the clock. On the first play of that drive, Vick connected with DeSean Jackson over the middle and the speedy receiver raced 28 yards before just being tripped up on a potential game-saving tackle by LB Desmond Bishop. Four plays later, though, Vick took a shot at the end zone in the direction of WR Riley Cooper, but Packers CB Tramon Williams leaped in front of Cooper to snare the game-seal-ing interception in the end zone … The Packers built a 14-0 lead in the first half as Rodgers fired two TDs (7 yards to TE Tom Crabtree and 9 yards to WR James Jones). The Eagles fanned on a scoring chance in the first quarter as Akers missed the first of two field goals after Omar Gaither recovered a muffed punt. However, Akers did get the Eagles on the scoreboard with a 29-yard field goal late in the first half. Trailing 14-3 at the intermission, Philadelphia’s defense provided a spark early in the 3rd quarter. DE Darryl Tapp sacked and forced a fumble of Rodgers deep in Packers territory, which fellow DE Juqua Parker recovered. Two plays later, Vick fired a 24-yard strike to WR Jason Avant for a touchdown as the Eagles trailed by just 14-10. Green Bay responded immediately, however, scoring on an 11-play, 80-yard drive that was capped by a 16-yard screen pass for a TD from Rodgers to RB Brandon Jackson.

Notes: Akers, who played in his franchise record most 19th playoff game, moved past Jerry Rice and into third place on the league’s all-time scoring list in the postseason … Rookie LB Keenan Clayton posted his first career sack in the 4th quarter … Tapp’s sack was his first in the postseason … Vick’s rushing TD was his first in the playoffs … DeSean Jackson moved past Brian Mitchell and into first place on the team’s all-time list in playoff punt return yardage.

In the team’s first trip to the playoffs since 2010, Philadelphia could not hold on to a late lead, as Saints K Shayne Graham hit a 32-yard field goal as time expired to give New Orleans a 26-24 victory over the Eagles at Lincoln Financial Field. Despite forcing two turnovers, the Eagles struggled to get anything going offensively in the first half, reaching the end zone just once. After trading punts to start the contest, CB Bradley Fletcher intercepted Saints QB Drew Brees and returned the ball 24 yards to the Eagles 49-yard line, giving the offense good field position to start their next drive. The Birds, aided by a 24-yard reception by TE Brent Celek, moved inside the Saints 25-yard line and converted on a fourth-and-one attempt to move into the red zone; however, back to back losses of eight and 11 yards forced a 48-yard field goal attempt from K Alex Henery, which missed wide left. Taking over on the 38-yard line, the Saints offense, behind a strong rushing attack, moved deep into Philadel-phia territory before settling for a 36-yard Graham field goal and a 3-0 lead. Following a punt on the ensuing possession, the Eagles quickly got the ball back after LB DeMeco Ryans picked off Brees and took the interception 23 yards to the New Orleans 44. A deep connection from QB Nick Foles to WR Riley Cooper marched the Birds deeper into Saints territory before the duo connected again on a 10-yard touchdown, giving the Eagles a 7-3 lead. The Saints added one more field goal at the end of the half, trimming the deficit to one going into the locker room. Early in the third, Brees found WR Lance Moore for a 24-yard touchdown to recapture the lead following a six-play, 53-yard drive. The Saints were able to force another Philadelphia three-and-out and once again found the end zone, as RB Mark Ingram bruised into the end zone for a four-yard score. The Eagles offense received a big boost on their next pos-session, as Foles hit WR DeSean Jackson down the Saints sideline for a 40-yard gain, setting up first and goal from the New Orleans nine-yard line. Four plays later, RB LeSean McCoy punched the ball in from one yard out one fourth-and-one to get the Birds within six at 20-14. Following a Saints three-and-out, Jackson returned a punt 29 yards to the New Orleans 40 and the offense drove the ball inside the team’s 10-yard line before they were forced to kick a field goal. New Orleans responded with a field goal on their next drive, giving Philadelphia the ball with under eight minutes remaining in the fourth quarter. A promising drive was aided by a 40-yard pass interference penalty, which brought the Eagles to the New Orleans three-yard line where Foles found TE Zach Ertz for a three-yard touchdown and a 24-23 lead with 4:54 remaining in the contest. On the ensuing kickoff, RB Darren Sproles returned the kick 39 yards and was brought to the ground via a horse collar tackle, which gave the Saints terrific field position at the Philadelphia 48. A rushing combo of RB Khiry Robinson and Ingram were able to move the chains while draining the clock before a 32-yard Graham field goal as time expired gave the Saints a 26-24 victory.
