The Written SystemModern Standard Arabic The Arabic Alphabet
!he written form of the Arabic language, which dates back to pre~Islamic periods, is called"Standard" or "Literary" Arabic and is used andunderstood throughout the Arab world. It is theform of the language taught in schools and is thede~'ault for educated Arabs of any nationality. Thewn~ten system has also been adopted by neigh-boring countries whose language is not Arabic, suchas Iran, Afghanistan, and Pakistan.
If you have done the Reading Lessons in LevelsI & II, you will be familiar with the Arabic script. If the Arabic alphabet is new to you or you need tore-familiarize yourself with the sounds of thealphabet, you may want to do the Levels I & IIReadings before proceeding with Level III.
~onoquial or "spoken" Arabic, includingSyrian Arabic, varies widely by region, sometimes?ifferi~g enough to be mutually unintelligible. ItIS considered to be a "dialect," and is almost neverwritten down. Most educated Arabic speakers areable to easily jump back and forth between Standardand dialect, even within the same sentence, with noloss of understanding.
The Arabic alphabet contains 29 letters includingthe hamra (glottal stop). There are also two variantsof existing letters, alifand taa.A num ber of diacriticalmarks complement the alphabet. These are signswritten above or below the letters; they are listed onpage 16, after the alphabet chart.
There are two categories of Arabic letters. Thefirst category contains six letters only, which arecalled "one-way connectors" because they connectonly to the "preceding letters" or letters to the right. They do not connect to "following letters" or lettersto the left. These are:
The Arabic writing system is easy to learn andmaster because the Arabic alphabet has a high corre-spondence between sound and symbol. This meansthat a letter is pronounced almost the same in everyword position.
IThe other 23 letters of the alphabet constitute the
letters of the second category. They connect to both2 3

Introduction (continued) Introduction (continued)preceding letters (to the right) and following letters(to the left), hence the term "two-way connectors." letters in the middle, and "final" refers to the lastletter of the word, on the left. The chart is to be used
only as a guide since all of the necessary informationfor beginning to read in Arabic will be given in theaudio portion of the Reading Lessons.
The alphabet contains three long vowels: alif(aa), waw (uu), and ya (ii). The latter two functionalso as consonants, as in "wet" and "yes." There arethree short counterparts of these vowels representedby diacritical marks: the fatHa (a), the damma (u),and the kasra (i). They are about half as long. A tinycircle written above a consonant is called a sukuunand represents the absence of a vowel.
TheLetter taa' marbuuta ( b )
The mark that resemb1es a tiny "w" is calledshadda. It signifies a doubled consonant. Forexample, this mark over the letter "t" makes theword pronounced /sit-tah/ rather than /sitah/.
The letter taa' marbuuta ( b ) serves only as asuffix and is a variant of the letter taa' (u). The taa'marbuuta (l;) functions most often as the femininenoun marker meaning that when this letter isattached to most masculine nouns and adjectives, itmakes them feminine.
A complete listing of the Arabic alphabet hasbeen included for your reference, beginning 011 page12. It is shown in two 2-page spreads, reading rightto left. Each letter has four different representations, depending on its position within a word. Thelisting includes the forms that the letters assumein different word positions. There is an independentform, as well as a beginning, a middle, and an endform. The term "initial" means the first letter of theword starting from the right, "medial" means all the
The taa' marbuuta is not always pronounced.Whether or not it is pronounced depends on thegrammatical function and structure of the word towhich it is added. The taa' marbuuta is not pronounced when: the word is said by itself, for example theword "car," sayyaara (;J~) the word is followed by an adjective, as in"big car," sayyaara kbiire (l;_& 6.)~)

The definite article in Arabic al (JI), is made upof the letters alif (I) and laam (J) and is prefixedto nouns and adjectives. Its pronunciation changesdepending on the word that follows it.
For example, if the article is prefixed to the/word "sun," shams C . .yl 1 ' ) J t) , the result, "the sun," is
ashshams (vu-~'-:zJr). The sli in ash blends into thesh in shams ~

beginning with a sound/letter that belongs to acertain group of letters referred to as "moon" or"lunar" letters. Long ago, Arab grammarians...used the word "moon," qamar (~), to exemplifythis group of sounds. If the article is prefixedto a word beginning with a moon letter, thelaam is pronounced as an I-sound and is said tobe non-assimilating.
The taa' marbuuta ( l ; ) is pronounced just like aregular taa' (0) when:

another suffix is attached to the word, e.g.,"two cars," sayyaartiin (~_)~). Again, in thiscase, the taa' marbuuta ( b ) is replaced with theletter taa' (u).

the word belongs with the fol1owing noun, resulting in a grammatical function similarto that of the preposition "of," as in the"city of New York" madiinat e)t nyuuyoork.~ ~ ~J..o(~~ . . ).
In contrast, there are words which start withsounds/letters called "sun" or "solar" letters. Arab.. .grammarians used the word "sun," shams (~),to exemplify this class of sounds. If the article isprefixed to a word beginning with a sun letter, thelaam changes to the sound of the sun letter and it issaid to be assimilating,he Definite Article (-11):Assimilating and Non-Assimilating Sounds

Introduction (continued) Introduction (continued)Phonological Variation: Local Dialects vs.
Modern Standard ArabicThe Reading Lessons
Differences between spoken Syrian and ModernStandard Arabic (MSA) exist at the phonologicallevel. Some examples of the differences inpronunciation are listed below.
The Reading Lessons in Eastern Arabic III aredesigned to familiarize the learner with words thatappear on signs, menus, and the like, as well asphrases that the learner is likely to see or hear inArabic-speaking countries. Also there is a lessonon the pronunciation of the names of some famousSyrians, as well as some typical expressions andregional idioms. There are twenty Reading Lessonsin all. Vowel markers have been included to aid youin reading unfamiliar words. Normally, everydaywritten Arabic will not include these markers ordiacritics. You will be reading both Modern StandardArabic (MSA) and Eastern Arabic. Instruction willbe given as needed. Normally, writing is done onlyin MSA, and experienced readers look at the wordsand translate them "on the fly" into their dialect.
The recorded portion of the reading materials forEastern Arabic III will be found at the end of theprogram. You can do the Readings when it is mostconvenient for you, either with the units, or entirelyafter completing the full 30 units. Full instructionson how to proceed are in the recording.
