LECTORS & INTERCESSORS AT MASS TODAY

!!THE COLLECT Almighty God, who through your only-begotten Son Jesus Christ overcame death and opened to us the gate of everlasting life: Grant that we, who celebrate with joy the day of the Lord's resurrection, may be raised from the death of sin by your life-giving Spirit; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen. !THE FIRST READING: !READER: A Reading from the Word of God written in the

Acts of the Apostles Chapter 10 beginning at the 34th verse

Peter opened his mouth and said: "Truly I perceive that God shows no partiality, but in every nation any one who fears him and does what is right is acceptable to him. You know the word which he sent to Israel, preaching good news of peace by Jesus Christ (he is Lord of all), the word which was proclaimed throughout all Judea, beginning from Galilee after the baptism which John preached: how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power; how he went about doing good and healing all that were oppressed by the devil, for God was with him. And we are witnesses to all that he did both in the country of the Jews and in Jerusalem. They put him to death by hanging him on a tree; but God raised him on the third day and made him manifest; not to all the people but to us who were chosen by God as witnesses, who ate and drank with him after he rose from the dead. And he commanded us to preach to the

become my salvation. 15 There is a sound of exultation and victory * in the

tents of the righteous: !16 “The right hand of the Lord has triumphed! * the

right hand of the Lord is exalted! the right hand of the Lord has triumphed!”

17 I shall not die, but live, * and declare the works of the Lord.

18 The Lord has punished me sorely, * but he did not hand me over to death.

19 Open for me the gates of righteousness; * I will enter them; I will offer thanks to the Lord.

20 “This is the gate of the Lord; * he who is righteous may enter.”

21 I will give thanks to you, for you answered me * and have become my salvation.

24 On this day the Lord has acted; * we will rejoice and be glad in it.

25 Hosannah, Lord, hosannah! * Lord, send us now success.

THE HOLY GOSPEL !The Lord be with you.

And also with you. !A Reading from the Holy Gospel

according to John Glory to Christ our Saviour.

At that time on the first day o f t h e w e e k M a r y Mag'dalene came to the tomb early, while it was still dark, and saw that the stone had been taken away from the tomb. So she ran, and went to Simon Peter and the other disciple, the one whom Jesus loved, and said

to them, "They have taken the Lord out of the tomb, and we do not know where they have laid him." Peter then came out with the other disciple, and they went toward the tomb. They both ran, but the other disciple outran Peter and reached the tomb first; and stooping to look in, he saw the linen cloths lying there, but he did not go in. Then Simon Peter came, following him, and went into the tomb; he saw the linen cloths lying, and the napkin, which had been on his head, not lying with the linen cloths but rolled up in a place by itself. Then the other disciple, who reached the tomb first, also went in, and he saw and believed; for as yet they did not know the scripture, that he must rise from the dead. Then the disciples went back to their homes.

The Bishop’s Easter Message - 2014 !

!!

The Archbishop of the West Indies, Primate and Metropolitan, !

and The Bishop of Barbados!!The Most Reverend Dr The Honourable John W.D.

Holder, CBE, LLD !To be Read in all Churches on Easter Day

The celebration of Easter is the celebration of the victory of life over death. It tells of the victory of all the good and gracious things of Our Lord’s ministry over the power of death that destroyed his life.

Our Lord’s miracles of restoration of health and life, his words of comfort to the despondent, and his message of hope form a golden thread that leads through his ministry with its many challenges to God’s great gift of resurrection. We should never rush along the road to Easter without first understanding the road that Jesus travelled during his ministry. For Easter is a celebration of this journey.

The message of Easter is a message that reminds us that the power of God stands firm, working for

!7

Page 8: Easterday 2014

us in spite of the many experiences of life that seem to suggest that this is not so.

It speaks directly to us at this time. In the face of all the bad news that we hear and read about each day, the Church on this day of resurrection proclaims the Good news that there is always hope that not even death can destroy.

The conviction that God is working for us provides the courage we need not only to face death but to face the issues of life that can make life difficult and challenging. For Easter is not so much about death but about life. It is about God’s great gift of life.

We need the power of the Easter message each and every day of our lives. When we are overwhelmed with the cares and worries of life, we need the Easter message about God’s power to conquer the hurdles of life.

It is the belief in the resurrection of Jesus their Lord that inspired the first Christians to work for the transformation of the world. And the world has not been the same ever since.

Like them we hold this belief. Our mandate is also to work for transformation. Let us work to make our mark in our time. Let us on this Easter day commit ourselves to be a source of hope, especially to those who need to be assured that God is still their God working for them and guiding them to greater experiences of his saving grace.

!8

Page 9: Easterday 2014

I wish you a blessed Easter. May this day be for us one in which we thank God for granting us the hope and the courage to conquer the challenges of life, and so become a source of Easter hope and joy for someone.

May God grant you a blessed Easter. !Your Friend and Bishop,

HEALTH CORNER !INTERESTING FOOD FACTS AND HISTORY !CUBE-SHAPED MELONS Having a problem with storing those watermelons in the refrigerator? Well then buy the cube shaped ones! Japanese farmers have discovered a way of growing melons in glass boxes to obtained a cube shape. There have also created melons shaped as hearts, pyramids, triangles and faces! If you plan to buy one, remember to walk with your cheque book! It can cost as much as US$120 for one of these creations. !DID YOU SAY PURPLE CARROTS? Did you know that purple carrots were the norm? There were also white, yellow, red and black varieties. Prior to the 17th Century, almost all carrots were yellow, white or purple. The white and yellow ones grew wildly. Some historians suggest that Dutch farmers experimented and cultivated orange carrots as a tribute to William of Orange, who led the struggle for Dutch independence. !FISH IN MY SAUCE Traditional Worcestershire sauce was made from dissolved fish along with other ingredients. Anchovies, small shiny silver fish, are soaked in vinegar until they have completely dissolved. Some brands of Worcestershire sauces are now made with artificial flavour as a replacement for anchovies. Those brands containing anchovies are recommended by Codex Alimentarius to have a warning of fish content on the label. !KETCHUP AS MEDICINE In 1834, Dr. John Cook Bennett from Ohio, published recipes for tomato ketchup and declared that it was a treatment for diarrhoea and indigestion. It was concentrated into a pill and sold as a patent medicine. !PASTRY FOR LENT In the 16th century, the German tradition of eating pretzels during Good Friday dinner, was introduced. The shape of these pastries was to symbolise crossed hands in prayer. They became associated with Lent because European Christians were forbidden to eat eggs, lard or dairy products during this period. Pretzels were made of only flour and water. ! !!
