Parish Stewardship of Treasure

Love Loving God, we love how You love us. We love how You free us. We love what You have given and created to surround us. Help us to recognize, and to rejoice in, what has been given, even in the midst of what is not given. Help us not to doubt all that You have given us, even when we feel our very real shortcomings. We thank You for the promise and sign of Your love in the Eternally Risen Christ, pervading all things in the universe, unbound by any of our categories of logic or theology. We offer You our lives back in return. We offer You our bodies, our little lives, our racing minds, and restless hearts into this one wondrous circle of Love that is You. My life is no longer just about me, but it is all about YOU.

Light of Christ

It was still dark, As she walked to the tomb.

Tears filling her eyes.

It was still dark, The stone was rolled away. The small cloth laid folded

And to the side.

It was still dark, As she ran to tell the others,

Fear alive within.

It was still dark, As the Light of Christ Shown upon us all.

RESPECT FOR LIFE

NURSING HOME VISITSWhat a wonderful welcome for those living in nearby nursing homes to receive a visit from St. Chris parishioners. Members of the Respect for Life Committee have been

blessed participating in this needed ministry. We would like to extend an invitation for any interested parishioner to join us! More volunteers allows us to schedule more visits to more facilities.

Even if you are not interested in attending Respect Life meet-ings, you can help with this ministry. Please contact Mark Folger at [email protected] if you would like to join us.

VULNERABLE?

The core of most Respect Life issues is vulnerability: Hu-mans in a situation without control … Humans in a position where someone else has the power to decide what happens. The situation requires us to care enough to do something to improve the situation. What are you doing to help the vulner-able??

Respect Life Topics are available from the US Conference of

Catholic Bishops website @ HTTP://WWW.USCCB.ORG/ISSUES-

AND-ACTION/HUMAN-LIFE-AND-DIGNITY/INDEX.CFM

MESSAGE FROM FR. DAVE

Below is the continuation from last week’s bulletin of the homily given by Cardinal Sean O’Malley. Previ-ous bulletins can be found on the St. Christopher website. “The author of Hebrews urges us to practice hospitality, for through it some have unknowingly enter-tained angels. He urges us to be mindful of prisoners as if sharing their imprisonment. We have presently over 30,000 detainees, most of whom have no criminal connections. The cost of these detentions is about $2 billion a year. The system is broken & is causing untold suffering & a tenable waste of resources, human & material. We find in those prisoners, neighbors, fellow human beings who are separated from their families & communities. The sheer volume of the cases has led to many due process violations & arbitrary detentions. At Lampedusa Pope Francis warned of the globalization of indifference. Pope Francis, speaking at the borders of Europe, not a desert, but a sea, said: "We have lost a sense of responsibility for our brothers & sisters. We have fallen into the hypocrisy of the Priest & Levite whom Jesus described in the parable of the Good Samaritan: we see our brother half dead on the side of the road & perhaps we say to ourselves: 'Poor soul' & then go our way. It is not our responsibility, & with that we feel reassured, assuaged. The culture of comfort, which makes us think only of ourselves, makes us insensitive to the cries of other people living in a soap bubble, indifferent to others." Our country has been the beneficiary of so many immigrant groups that had the courage & the fortitude to come to America. They came fleeing horrific conditions & harboring a dream of a better life for the chil-dren. They were some of the most industrious, ambitious & enterprising citizens of their own countries & brought enormous energy & good will to their new homeland. Their hard work & sacrifices have made this country great. Often these immigrants have been met with suspicion & discrimination. The Irish were told "they need not apply"; our ethnicity & religion made us undesirable. But America at its best is not the bigotry & xeno-phobia of the "Know Nothings", but the generous welcome of the New Colossus, that mighty woman with a Torah, the Statue of Liberty, the Mother of Exiles who proclaims to the world: "Keep, ancient lands, your storied pomp," cries she with silent lips, "Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free, the wretched refuse of your teeming shore. Send these, the home-less, tempest-tost to me; I lift my lamp beside the golden door!" (Emma Lazarus) We must be vigilant that that lamp continues to burn brightly.”

Today is the greatest feast of the church calendar, Easter & it begins at the vigil Saturday night; “it should begin after nightfall & end before the dawn of Sunday.” And at the vigil nine readings can be done, seven from Old Testa-ment & two from New Testament, but most of us use less than nine readings. This is the feast from which all others stem & the only feast kept by the early followers of the Lord. The Resurrection is so important that the Lord’s fol-lowers even to this present time observe every Sunday as the Lord’s Day, as a “little Easter.” Lent has prepared us for the feast & in similar fashion, the Easter season is the liturgical continuation of this greatest of feasts, & lasts for 50 days. This amounts to seven weeks & is crowned with the feast of Pentecost. And at Pentecost we say “50 days have celebrated the fullness of the mystery of your revealed Love.” This entire 50 day season is designed as a pro-longation of Easter. There are two special characteristics of the Easter season; first is the Pascal Candle, which burns until Pentecost at all of our liturgical celebrations & at every baptism & funeral liturgy. Second is the Alleluia, our victory cry or acclimation over the Resurrection of our own Lord. “Alleluia” is a Hebrew word meaning “Praise the Lord.” In the Book of Revelation this is a special song for those who have been saved. As the great St. Augustin said, “We are Easter people & Alleluia is our song.” And Christians always stand for the Alleluia to receive the risen Lord in com-munion as a physical reminder of the resurrection. The first week of the Easter Season is special possessing an essential unity by which every Mass is like Easter itself, & every gospel is an appearance of the risen Lord. These Masses of Easter week, as expected, are among the most stirring & dramatic of the entire year telling how the Lord appeared to his disciples after the holy women found the tomb empty. During East-er Season we read the Acts of the Apostles as this book demonstrates the impact of the Risen Christ on the young church. The special “Gospel of the 50 days” is from John & it is theological & strongly reflective of the Resurrection. The Easter Season is an anticipation of the joys & good things of heaven & reminds us that by faith & baptism we are “risen with Christ,” & that our journey through this life has been strength-ened by the victory of the Lord over death.
