olderadultsFor nearly a century, Easter
Seals Michigan has empowered
extraordinary individuals to live more
independent lives. Our story has
evolved over time, but our purpose
remains the same. Our programs
support individuals and families of
all ages – from birth to older adults.
We serve thousands of people each
year, partnering with each individual
to improve their quality of life and
help them to prosper. In the next
decade, the number of Americans
over 65 years of age will increase
to 71 million. People with lifelong
disabilities are living longer. Easter
Seals Michigan plans to provide adult
services to this growing population to
promote wellness, independence and
connectivity to the community. Our
mission does not just stand the test
of time, it grows stronger. Call us to
learn more about how we can help.

We helPed betty Find her Place. let us helP you Find yours. After taking several falls while getting into
bed, 82 year-old Betty began sleeping in
her recliner, which caused her hip and
back pain, and low quality sleep. She called
Easter Seals Michigan and enrolled in the
Independent Living program.
Easter Seals Michigan went to Betty’s
apartment and did an assessment of the
home for safety concerns and fall hazards.
Several suggestions were made for basic
safety, such as removing all throw rugs. The
therapist also suggested that she get a bed
rail to assist her with her transfers in and
out of bed. Betty reports that the bed rail
Easter Seals Michigan provided her with was
a lifesaver. Since receiving help from Easter
Seals Michigan, Betty hasn’t had a single fall
and has been sleeping soundly. Now she is
confident about getting into and out of bed
and has been feeling much more refreshed
and energized after a good night’s sleep.

We helPed emma Find her Place. let us helP you Find yours. Imagine losing your ability to care for
yourself – relying on your loved ones to
feed you, bathe you, drive you to doctor’s
appointments, or take care of all the
little details you used to be able to do for
yourself. Imagine how difficult it would be
to lose your independence so completely.
This was the life facing Emma. After
experiencing a knee replacement,
congestive heart failure, arthritis, and
Alzheimer’s, Emma was unable to manage
her physical needs.
Emma’s loving husband took care of her
every day, giving her sponge baths when
she was no longer able to navigate the
stairs to her shower. His devotion to Emma
is a beautiful reminder of the love and
dedication of caregivers who must watch
their loved ones suffer.
Although they were getting by, Emma’s
quality of life had room for improvement.
By using adaptive equipment and services
provided through Easter Seals Michigan’s
Older Adults Program, Emma can once
again enjoy her independence.

Sandra was diagnosed with renal failure six
years ago and receives dialysis three times
a week. Her husband Chuck served as her
caregiver – making most meals, cleaning
the house and running errands. Their
roles reversed when Chuck was recently
diagnosed with dementia.
When Sandra first came to Easter Seals
Michigan, she felt overwhelmed. She had
not learned much about Chuck’s disease
and had no idea what to expect. During a
session with an ESM therapist, Sandra was
educated about dementia and learned to
speak to Chuck in short, direct sentences.
ESM placed bright yellow tape and push
lights on the couple’s stairways to increase
Chuck’s visual awareness. ESM also
collaborated with Meals on Wheels and
Ridelink, and arranged for a home health
aide to visit five hours a week.
Chuck attends an adult day center three
times a week where he can socialize
and bathe while Sandra receives dialysis.
Sandra’s stress level has reduced, and the
couples’ living conditions have dramatically
improved.

We helPed sandra and chuck. let us helP you.
