HOPE SPRINGS ETERNAL:

WHY EASTER MATTERS

Hope springs eternal in the human breast;

Man never is, but always to be blest:

The soul, uneasy and confined from home,

Rests and expatiates in a life to come. (I, 95-98)

These words, penned by the 18th century British Catholic poet Alexander Pope, are perhaps more often quoted on ESPN than in a British literature class– especially during Spring Training in the Grapefruit League. Raised a devout Catholic at a time of anti-Catholic legislation in the British parlia-ment, I think it likely that Alexander received his share of teasing about his surname. Despite his friends admonitions and encouragement to abandon the Catholic faith, he did not, but politely and quietly remained, even while eschewing dogmatic discussions, leaving those disputes to others. Having been barred from public school, Pope was essentially self-taught. He stud-ied French, Italian, Latin and Greek and was a voracious reader. But this strophe from his poem entitled “An Essay on Man,” dates from 1734 and is his effort to “vindicate the ways of God to man.” (Epistle I, 16) For Pope, God’s ways will always remain mysterious, and we ought to know our place and not presume to act beyond our limits. “In human works, though laboured on with pain, A thousand movements scarce one purpose gain.”

Yes, before God we must indeed bow in humility, and as creatures, we are called to trust in His divine Providence. The Solemnity of Easter is above all a feast of hope, and in this respect, Pope’s poem speaks to me, as it has to countless generations before. Hope springs eternal– it must call us to deeper trust in God, rather than in our human achievements. Even our magnificent Cathedral is but a human attempt to give glory to God, making use of the artistry, technical ingenuity, and the many sacrifices of genera-tions of Catholics who built this edifice to glorify God. Wading through the photographs from the Archives (many of which were published in the online version of the Star Tribune story last week), I mar-veled in seeing this church take shape over nine years, despite the primitive technology available a century ago. By this, I mean no disrespect to the horses, depicted in photos pulling wagons containing the large granite blocks! (See photo on page 5) And still, it is about glorifying God, not Em-manuel Masqueray, Archbishop John Ireland, or anyone else. It is but an attempt to encapsulate our fervent longing for heaven, while on earth. Pope’s poem reminds us that this can never happen, not now anyway. There will always be a gap, a chasm between us and God. He was correct. And yet, that same God has reached down to the depths of human sin and suffering, in order to save us and set us free.

Our Easter joy cannot mask the many problems, either in the world or in our lives; however, Easter most certainly contextualizes them. If we do not manifest and reflect joy, we’ll never be viable witnesses to the Kingdom. I was delighted to read that St. Lawrence Catholic Church (near the Univer-sity of Minnesota campus) welcomed 17 new Catholics this Easter. Here, under the zealous leadership of Patrick Conley, Director of RCIA, seven adults were baptized and 18 others were received into full Communion with the Catholic Church at the Easter Vigil. These are signs of hope and we ought to rejoice in them, though humbly and reverently, not haughtily.

A most blessed Easter to all. May God continue to guide us along the path of faith, hope and love.

Hope humbly, then; with trembling pinions soar;

Wait the great teacher Death; and God adore.

What future bliss, He gives not thee to know,

But gives that hope to be thy blessing now. (I, 91-94)

• Hope springs eternal? It’s time for my Twins prediction for 2015. With all due respect to Alexander Pope, and while I think this year’s club will be improved, so too will the other teams in the loaded AL Central. Sorry, but the Twins finish fifth (a.k.a. last) with just 73 wins, only a slight improvement from last year’s win total. Some key prospects have not sufficiently progressed, and the team’s schedule is brutal. I’d much rather be in the AL East this year. Believe me, I hope I’m wrong!!

• Final call for our Centennial Raffle and Brunch, to be held next Sun-day. Ticket stubs may be returned via the regular Sunday collection– $5 per chance, a book of 15 for $75. The Grand Prize is a wonderful Pil-grimage for two with Mater Dei Tours or $3000 cash. The drawing will take place at our festive Centennial Brunch following the 10:00 a.m. Mass next Sunday, April 12.

• Please make plans to join us next Sunday after the 10:00 a.m. Mass, celebrated by Archbishop Nienstedt, for our Centennial Brunch. It commemorates the 100th anniversary of the simple blessing of the Church carried out by Archbishop Ireland. Food and entertainment follow Mass in Hayden Hall. Tickets will be available at the door.

• A very busy weekend…For Divine Mercy Sunday, we will offer a spe-cial Holy Hour at 2:00 p.m. that includes Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament and concludes with the sung Divine Mercy Chaplet, a beau-tiful and meditative prayer. Participants may attend confession in the days preceding or following Divine Mercy Sunday.

Sincerely in Christ,

Fr. John L. Ubel,

Rector

A WORD OF HEARTFELT THANKS

I wish to thank all those who have worked so diligently to make our Holy Week liturgies so beautiful, beginning with our organists, musicians, the gifted men and women who served as Cantors, our Choir and Schola members, and our Children’s Choristers. To the well over 100 people who turned out to clean the Church–as well as those who decorated the sanctu-ary, Sacred Heart Chapel and prepared the altar linens and flowers–your service produced rich dividends. Our faithful Deacons, in concert with our tireless men and women in the sacristy, all helped to keep things running smoothly throughout the Triduum. Our dedicated lectors, servers, and ex-traordinary ministers of Holy Communion diligently and gracefully ful-filled their roles.

I offer a special word of welcome to all visitors to the Cathedral for the Easter celebrations. You are most welcome today and always. Thank you

EASTER COLLECTION

VOICES FROM THE ARCHIVES

This is the Day . . .

Records show that Holy Week services were well attended and that again on Easter, April 4, 1915, the Cathedral was filled with parishioners and visitors. The Easter theme, "This is the day the Lord hath made. . . ” may have recalled Archbishop John Ireland's sermon on the opening day of the Cathedral just the week before. The Archbishop had used words, usually reserved for the joy of the Resurrection, in his Palm Sunday sermon. The words may have seemed out of context on Palm Sunday, but for Ireland, the joy and hope of the Resurrection was the perfect context for the open-ing of the new Cathedral.

+

"This is the day which the Lord hath made; let us be glad and rejoice therein." Long have we waited for its coming, now amid hopes, now amid fears—hopes that at a time not too remote the Cathedral would rise into full stateliness of form and open. . . its welcoming portals; fears lest our visions had gone beyond the reach of our love and sacrifice. "This is the day which the Lord hath made:". . .[now] fears are departed shadows: hopes are blissful fruitions. The Cathedral enters on its Heaven-born mis-sion--service to God, service to souls. Hail thou, Cathedral of St. Paul.

Perhaps, we are unjust to the Cathedral. We have allowed it no leisure to put itself into due readiness to bedeck interior walls with marble robings, to set in place sculptured columns and fretted arches, to grace sanctuary and chapels with the beauteousness of which they must be radiant when the last bidding of the artist’s pencil will have been obeyed. But seeing it as it is, does it not wrest to itself, friends and benefactors of the Cathedral, your admiration, your praise, your exultation of mind and heart?. . . You built it--you, Catholic men and women of the diocese of St. Paul. The ap-peal was made: the thousands, the tens of thousands gave answer. The greater number are poor in worldly store: all are rich in Christian faith, in Christian love: and, thus the Cathedral was built.

+

Note: Archbishop Ireland's sermon is remembered as lasting about forty minutes. Msgr. Lawrence Ryan recalled that his voice was "throaty, but dominant, clear and loud, carrying to the farthest corner of the Cathedral.” If you would like to hear what Archbishop Ireland's sermon may have sounded like to his congregation in 1915, check the Cathedral website un-der Media Archives. Patrick Conley, Cathedral Director of Faith Forma-tion, has interpreted Ireland's words in the oratorical style of the day. ACSP.

Centennial Note. Angels all around—and four parishioners have counted and identified them. If you want to join the group and win a special Cen-tennial memorabilia for your angel-watch, there’s still time to send in your list. Identify and locate the angels in the Cathedral and send your list to [email protected] by April 10. Call 651.228.1766 if you have any questions.

REMEMBRANCE, THANKSGIVING,

CELEBRATION

The Angelus, Cathedral Music and Archbishop Murray: Cathedral Memories. My first recollection of the Cathedral that made an impression on me was when I was about 5 years old. The Cathedral still had just one bell. The Angelus rang at 6pm. I always thought it was to remind me that my Mom was on the way home from work. At Mass we sat in the 6th pew in front of the lectern. My mother, Ann Johnson, didn’t have much money to spare but always a little for the collection plate. The music was beautiful. Mom had a lovely voice and I was so proud to hear her sing especially at Novenas. Novenas always ended with “Holy God, We Praise Thy Name.” Such a beautiful hymn. I sang in the Cathedral School choir 6th to 8th grade with Father Kuncl directing and Ruth Dindorf at the organ. From school we attended Mass as a group during the month of May in honor of the Virgin Mary and Stations of the Cross during Lent. There were many times I shared a conversation with Archbishop Murray as we rode the Selby-Lake streetcar. Such a kind man. Later on, there was my Confirmation, Marriage and the Baptism of my sons. So many wonderful memories that span 75 years. Dot Drake, Parishioner. Please send your memories of the Cathedral to [email protected].
