Welcome to the Spring 2014 Community Education Brochure. Our mission through Eastern Wyoming College and the Weston County School District#1 is to provide life-long learning opportunities for the residents of Weston County. We strive to provide a variety of classes, trainings and trips to fulfill everyone’s interests and needs. Here are four simple ways for you to register for classes:

Adult Basic Education The Adult Basic Education center offers instruction for the High School Equivalency certificate, English as a Second Language, WorkKeys Preparation, EL Civics, Workforce Literacy and Adult Literacy. The center is an open-entry, open-exit program. HiSet Exam Contact the EWC Outreach office to schedule an appointment to take the HiSet exam to earn your high school equivalency certificate. To be eligible to take the HiSet exam, a candidate should complete 12 to 50 hours of adult education preparation and successfully complete an official practice test.

Charcoal Portrait Workshop

“The Basics of Getting a Likeness”

In this one day workshop, the instructor will share with you a method of getting a likeness, tips on working from and taking photographs for a portrait, figuring proportions, placing, seeing and rendering the features. You will receive tips on helping avoid the most common pitfalls in portraiture.

Instructor: Karen Barton Karen has been a professional portrait artist for 22 years. Her portraits are displayed in public buildings as well as private homes throughout the country. She works in oils, pastels, charcoal, and graphite pencil. Her work can be seen at www.karenbarton.com.

Beginning Quilting

Do you want to learn to quilt but you’re not quite sure where to begin? This class is for you! We will start at the beginning and go step by step through the process of making a quilt top, including fabric selection, tools you will need and how to use them, rotary cutting skills, how to achieve and maintain a quarter-inch seam, pressing tips and tricks and what you will need to finish the quilt. A basic knowledge of sewing with a sewing machine will be necessary. *A supply list is available at the Community Education office.

Instructor:: Shelley Reed Shelley has been sewing for 47 years and making quilts for 19 years. She has taught garment and home sewing and quilting classes from beginning to intermediate.

Country Lanes Quilt

This is an easy strip pieced quilt that only has two blocks in it, a chain block and a large one piece block. The pattern comes from alternating the two and the chains will appear to float at the outside edges of the quilt. This pattern comes from the ‘Quilt in a Day, Quilts through the Seasons’ book which may have to be purchased for the class. *A supply list is available at the Community Education office.

Pottery

Clay is a time honored art form and an amazing tactile ex-perience. This class will explore the utilitarian tradition of clay and experiment with clay’s aesthetic possibilities. The course will teach hand-building techniques such as pinch-ing, coil construction, slab building, as well as introducing students to wheel throwing. The course will also touch on the basics of glazing and surface coloring.

Instructor: Jimmie Josephson Jimmie Josephson teaches art at the high school and is an adjunct professor for Eastern Wyoming College. She maintains a professional interest in the arts and pursues various materials to include drawing, painting, ceramic, and glass.

There is a total of 30 classroom hours and 18 vehicle hours for this course. High school students will receive high school credit for taking this course. Students need to be 15 years of age or older and have a learners permit by March 7. A sign-up sheet will be available at the EWC Newcastle Outreach office. Please call or stop in to register for class. Class size is limited, register early.

Students will receive a class schedule on the first day of class. The driving portion of the class will run until the beginning of June.

This Class will provide instruction on such subjects as Recruiting and Diversity, Roles and Responsibilities, Division of Labor, Transparency, Group Facilitation, Board and Board Member Evaluation, etc. Go a step beyond Successful Boards I and add more tools and understanding to your skill set.

Instructor: Bill Taylor Bill is the Northeast Area Community Development Educator for the University of Wyoming Cooperative Extension Service. He has been trained in integrated management, facilitation, mediation, business management and counseling, conflict management, strategic planning, board governance and personal financial management. Bill provides programming for five counties in personal financial management, community leadership training, and board governance, as well as providing facilitation and mediation services.

Basics in Microsoft Excel

This class is for computer savvy individuals who need to learn the basic features and menu commands in Microsoft Excel. You will learn how to create and maintain worksheets within a workbook. You will learn basic formatting features, such as shading and coloring; work with basic formulas to calculate numerical data; and create borders and graphs.

Cruising Computers at 55+

Are you a “seasoned” adult 55+ years of age? Do you have a computer or want to get one but are feeling uncomfortable with this “new-fangled technology”? If those questions describe you, “Cruising Computers at 55+” is the course for you. Windows 8 Workshop

This workshop is intended for anyone who has recently upgraded to Windows 8 or is thinking about upgrading to a new device (computer, tablet, phone) running Windows 8.

This will be a ‘hands-on’ experience where you will learn how to navigate through the new system. You will be introduced to basic computer terminology and concepts as well as common types of hardware and software. Beginners will learn how to perform basic tasks such as finding and opening programs, creating and saving basic documents, using email services and surfing the web. Experienced users will be shown some new tips and tricks as well as ways to make their new computer work more like their old one.

Instructor: Andy Espinoza Andy is currently the Workforce Development Technology Instructor at Eastern Wyoming College. He has been teaching full-time for EWC since 2007 but has been working with technology (specifically with Microsoft Windows based personal computers) since 1985.

iPad II

This course is a hands-on instructor led course for anyone that currently owns and uses an Apple iPad that would like to learn more about the features and getting the most from the device. This training explores the basics and some advanced features. Additionally, participants will examine a variety of applications, learn how to download applications, and several other tips and tricks for using their iPad. Other Apple iOS devices will be briefly covered but will not be explored in detail during this course.

Instructor: Guy Fullerton Guy has been using Apple iOS devices since 2010 and has incorporated them into the daily operation at Wyoming Refining Company in Newcastle. He has been dubbed the unofficial Apple iOS guru there and frequently helps new users of the iPhone or iPad set up their devices and show them how to incorpo-rate them with their company mail server along with giving them some tips and tricks for using their devices.

Zumba

This Zumba class will be a workout that mixes body sculpting movements with dance steps derived from cumbia, meringue, salsa, reggaeton, hip hop, mambo, rumba, flamenco, calypso and salsa. The routines feature aerobic interval training with a combination of fast and slow rhythms. It targets areas such as the glutes, legs, arms, abdominals, and heart. Different movements will be taught from beginners to experts. The workout is easy to follow and you’ll be having so much fun that you’ll forget you are even ‘working out’!

Instructor: Priscilla Pruitt Priscilla has cheered and danced all throughout high school. After she graduated, she taught Ballroom dance (Latin Division) by award winning Michael Garland of American Bandstand and Soul Train. She trained with Michael for four years and then went on to join Salsa Passion Dance company and competed in Salsa dancing. Priscilla has taught Ballroom as well as Ballroom fit aerobics and Zumba. Where Does All My Money Go?

The purpose of this three hour class is to help participants recognize and understand various avenues, skills and attitudes of family finances and proper money management, and to give them the tools to properly monitor and manage their finances. The class uses various PowerPoint slides, video clips, class activities, worksheets, and discussion to present the material and to engage the participants. Even though it is approximately 3 hours in length, it is fast paced and uses variety to keep participants involved. Participants need not bring anything to the class but an interest to learn and grow. They will not be asked to divulge any aspect of their personal financial situation, even though they will be asked to think about some of their money issues and do some private financial planning. Lasagna Gardening

Learn how to turn ordinary yard waste, kitchen scraps, card-board and newspapers into a gardener’s dream plot. This layered garden offers a nutrient filled alternative to traditional gardening. As long as the sun is shining and you have a water source nearby, the location does not matter.

Learn about the basics concerning planting and maintaining Giant Dinner Plate Dahlias and other flowers that perform well in our area. Following the class, you will receive your own Giant Dinner Plate Dahlia tuber to take home.

Instructor: Marsha Halliday Marsha has been home gardening in Newcastle for 33 years, has volunteered for the Newcastle city flower projects for the last 13 years, has been a Dirt Dauber Garden Club member for the past 11 years, and has been a volunteer and advisor to ‘We Go Girls’ for the coal car projects for the last 4 years.

Information about the wineries and breweries and their products will be part of the bus tour, as will some wine entertainment. Tastings will be included, but lunch, souvenirs, wine purchases, and other miscellaneous are all responsibilities of the individuals.

Wine, Chocolate, and Cheese

This class is going to focus on wine and food pairing techniques, specifically as it pertains to wine, chocolate, and cheese. Information about wine, as well as the cheese and chocolate, will be given. If you have already taken Wine 101 and Wine 202, this is the class for you to keep increasing your knowledge of wine! If you haven’t taken other wine classes, start here and learn about three of the best items that go together: wine, chocolate, and cheese! Instructors: Kara Sweet & Vicki Hayman Kara Sweet is a certified sommelier through the International Wine Guild and Court of Master Sommeliers. She has taught multiple wine classes in Newcastle and around the Black Hills, worked for multiple wine businesses in the area, and done volunteer wine work. Kara loves wine, chocolate, and cheese; when they go together they are three times as good!

Vicki is a University of Wyoming Cooperative Extension Service Northeast Area Nutrition and Food Safety Educator. She has been providing CES programming for 16 years.

Dog Obedience

Learn effective dog obedience techniques. Dogs or puppies must be leashed at all times. Handlers must be old enough and strong enough to handle the dog. Dogs must be 12 weeks or older, anything younger must be approved by the in-structor. Please bring a six foot leash (not retractable), a choke collar and doggie treats. Dogs must be up-to-date with shots. Please bring shot re-cords to the first class. Shot records must be signed by a licensed veterinarian.

*ALL 4-H Youth Members will not be charged a fee

Would you like to know what hair styling fads are ‘In’ for long, medium or short length hair? St. Patrick's Day Bus Tour to Deadwood

Grab your family and friends for a St. Patrick’s Day Celebration in the Old West. Participate in pub crawls, the Leprechaun Olympics, parades, music and food. Deadwood's annual Pub Crawl is the largest of its kind in the region, with well over 1,200 participants annually.
