    Welcome to Bradford Cathedral The seat of the Bishop of Leeds and a Centre of Worship and Mission

    One of three Cathedrals in the Anglican Diocese of Leeds

    Our purpose is to serve Jesus Christ as a vibrant community of worship and

    mission enriching the City, the Diocese and further afield.

    ❖ Please join in at home, by saying or singing the words in bold type in this order of service.

    ❖ This is a service of Holy Communion. The term ‘Spiritual Communion’ has been used historically to describe the means of grace by which a person, prevented for

    some serious reason from sharing in a celebration of the Eucharist, nonetheless

    shares in the communion of Jesus Christ. The Church of which we are members is

    not defined by the walls of a building but by the Body of Christ of which we are

    members. In making our communion spiritually, we are joining with Christians

    everywhere to be nourished by the one who tells us, ‘I am the Bread of Life’.

    ❖ You may wish to use the following prayer, after Richard of Chichester:

    Thanks be to you, Lord Jesus Christ,

    for all the benefits you have given me,

    for all the pains and insults you have borne for me.

    Since I cannot now receive you sacramentally,

    I ask you to come spiritually into my heart.

    O most merciful redeemer, friend and brother,

    may I know you more clearly, love you more dearly,

    and follow you more nearly, day by day. Amen.

    ❖ Members of the Music Department lead this morning’s worship. The choral settings are John Rutter’s Communion Service (Series 3) and James MacMillan’s St

    Anne’s Mass.

    Voluntary: Prelude in E, Op. 11 No. 9 by A. Scriabin

    Welcome

    The Very Reverend Jerry Lepine, Dean of Bradford

    Hymn

    Jesus lives! thy terrors now

    can, O death, no more appal us;

    Jesus lives! by this we know

    thou, O grave, canst not enthral us.

    Alleluia.

    Jesus lives! henceforth is death

    but the gate of life immortal:

    this shall calm our trembling breath,

    when we pass its gloomy portal.

    Alleluia.

    Jesus lives! for us he died;

    then, along to Jesus living,

    pure in heart may we abide,

    glory to our Saviour giving.

    Alleluia.

    Jesus lives! our hearts know well

    naught from us his love shall sever;

    life nor death nor power of hell

    tear us from his keeping ever.

    Alleluia.

    Jesus lives! to him the throne

    over all the world is given:

    may we go where he is gone,

    rest and reign with him in heaven.

    Alleluia.

    Words: C.F. Gellert (1715-1769); tr. Frances Elizabeth Cox (1812-1897)

    Tune: ST ALBINUS; CP 148

    The Reverend Canon Flora Winfield, Chapter member

    The light and peace of Jesus Christ be with you

    and also with you.

    The glory of the Lord has risen upon us.

    Let us rejoice and sing God’s praise for ever.

    Alleluia. Christ is risen.

    He is risen indeed. Alleluia!

    On this Vocations Sunday we give thanks to God that he calls us all to

    varieties of forms of service in his Church and in the world.

    And so we pray for openness to his Holy Spirit, that each of us may

    discern the call of God upon our lives.

    Prayer of Preparation

    Almighty God, to whom all hearts are open,

    all desires known,

    and from whom no secrets are hidden:

    cleanse the thoughts of our hearts

    by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit,

    that we may perfectly love you,

    and worthily magnify your holy name;

    through Christ our Lord.

    Amen.

    Prayer of the day

    Almighty and everlasting God,

    by whose Spirit the whole body of the Church

    is governed and sanctified:

    hear our prayer which we offer for all your faithful people,

    that in their vocation and ministry

    they may serve you in holiness and truth

    to the glory of your name;

    through our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.

    Amen.

    New Testament Reading Acts 2.42-end

    They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and fellowship, to the breaking of

    bread and the prayers.

    Awe came upon everyone, because many wonders and signs were being done by the

    apostles. All who believed were together and had all things in common; they would

    sell their possessions and goods and distribute the proceeds to all, as any had

    need. Day by day, as they spent much time together in the temple, they broke

    bread at home and ate their food with glad and generous hearts, praising God and

    having the goodwill of all the people. And day by day the Lord added to their

    number those who were being saved.

    This is the word of the Lord.

    Thanks be to God.

    Silence

    Gradual

    Solo: Rise, heart; thy Lord is risen. Sing his praise,

    without delays,

    Who takes thee by the hand, that thou likewise

    With him may’st rise:

    That, as his death calcined thee to dust,

    His life may make thee gold, and much more, Just.

    Awake, my lute, and struggle for thy part

    With all thy art.

    The cross taught all wood to resound his name,

    Who bore the same.

    His stretched sinews taught all strings, what key

    Is best to celebrate this most high day.

    Consort both heart and lute, and twist a song

    Pleasant and long:

    Or since all music is but three parts vied,

    And multiplied;

    O let thy blessed Spirit bear a part,

    And make up our defects with his sweet art.

    Text: G. Herbert (1593-1633) Music: R. Vaughan Williams (1872-1958)

    Gospel Acclamation

    Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia.

    Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia.

    Whoever wishes to become great among you must be your servant,

    and whoever wishes to be first among you must be the servant of all.

    Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia.

    Gospel Reading

    Hear the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to John.

    Glory to you, O Lord

    John 10.1-10

    Very truly, I tell you, anyone who does not enter the sheepfold by the gate but

    climbs in by another way is a thief and a bandit. The one who enters by the gate is

    the shepherd of the sheep. The gatekeeper opens the gate for him, and the sheep

    hear his voice. He calls his own sheep by name and leads them out. When he has

    brought out all his own, he goes ahead of them, and the sheep follow him because

    they know his voice. They will not follow a stranger, but they will run from him

    because they do not know the voice of strangers.’ Jesus used this figure of speech

    with them, but they did not understand what he was saying to them.

    So again Jesus said to them, ‘Very truly, I tell you, I am the gate for the sheep. All

    who came before me are thieves and bandits; but the sheep did not listen to them. I

    am the gate. Whoever enters by me will be saved, and will come in and go out and

    find pasture. The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they

    may have life, and have it abundantly.

    This is the Gospel of the Lord.

    Praise to you, O Christ

    Affirmation of faith

    Let us declare our faith

    in the resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ.

    Christ died for our sins

    in accordance with the Scriptures;

    he was buried;

    he was raised to life on the third day

    in accordance with the Scriptures;

    afterwards he appeared to his followers,

    and to all the apostles:

    this we have received,

    and this we believe.

    Amen.

    cf 1 Corinthians 15.3-7

    Prayers of Penitence

    ‘I set no store by life:

    I only want to finish the race and complete the task

    that the Lord has assigned to me,

    of bearing witness to the gospel of God’s grace.’

    Let us confess our failure to live up to our calling.

    Silence

    Lord Jesus, you said to your disciples:

    ‘You have not chosen me, but I have chosen you.’

    Lord, have mercy.

    Lord, have mercy.

    Lord Jesus, we know that the harvest is plentiful

    but the labourers are few.

    Christ, have mercy.

    Christ, have mercy.

    Lord Jesus, you appointed us to go and bear fruit that will last.

    Lord, have mercy.

    Lord, have mercy.

    May God who loved the world so much

    that he sent his Son to be our Saviour

    forgive you your sins

    and make you holy to serve him in the world,

    through Jesus Christ our Lord.

    Amen.

    Prayers of Intercession

    Lord God of all . . .

    After each section this response is used:

    Lord, hear your people

    and answer our prayers.

    Lord of all,

    you have called each of us to serve you

    in your world and in your Church;

    strengthen and equip us by your Spirit

    to recognise your call to us,

    and give us grace and courage to fulfill that calling.,

    through Jesus Christ our Saviour.

    Amen.

    Giving and Receiving Peace

    The risen Christ came and stood among his disciples and said,

    ‘Peace be with you.’

    Then were they glad when they saw the Lord. Alleluia. John 20:19.20

    The peace of the Lord be always with you.

    And also with you.

    The Table is set with bread and wine.

    Our offerings are received: www.bradfordcathedral.org

    Prayer at the Preparation of the Table

    Heavenly Father,

    as we set before you these gifts of bread and wine,

    bless also the gift of our hearts and minds

    as we offer our lives in your service;

    for Jesus Christ’s sake.

    Amen.

    Great Thanksgiving Prayer

    The Lord is here.

    His Spirit is with us.

    Lift up your hearts.

    We lift them to the Lord.

    Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.

    It is right to give thanks and praise.

    It is indeed right,

    it is our duty and our joy

    at all times and in all places

    to give you thanks and praise,

    heavenly Father, source of all that is,

    for you have called our world into existence,

    and filled it with abundant life.

    You called a chosen people as your own,

    and led them in the way of holiness.

    You called your beloved Son,

    in whom you were well pleased,

    to give his life for us on the cross,

    and rise again in glory.

    And now we give you thanks

    that you call men and women

    to equip your holy people for the work of ministry,

    for the building up of the body of Christ.

    Therefore with angels and archangels,

    and with all the company of heaven,

    we proclaim your great and glorious name,

    for ever praising you and singing:

  • 11

    On the night before he died,

    Jesus shared a meal with his friends.

    He took the bread, and thanked you.

    He broke it, and gave it to them, saying:

    Take and eat; this is my body, given for you.

    Do this to remember me.

    After the meal, Jesus took the cup of wine.

    He thanked you, and gave it to them, saying:

    Drink this, all of you.

    This is my blood,

    the new promise of God’s unfailing love.

    Do this to remember me.

    Great is the mystery of faith:

    Christ has died.

    Christ is risen.

    Christ will come again.

    As we bring this bread and wine,

    and remember his death and resurrection,

    send your Holy Spirit,

    that we who share these gifts

    may be fed by Christ’s body and his blood.

    Pour your Spirit on us

    that we may love one another,

    work for the healing of the earth,

    and share the good news of Jesus,

    as we wait for his coming in glory.

    For honour and praise belong to you,

    with Jesus your Son, and the Holy Spirit:

    one God, for ever and ever.

    Amen.

    Silence

    The Lord’s Prayer

    As our Saviour taught us, so we pray:

    Our Father in heaven

    hallowed be your name,

    your kingdom come,

    your will be done,

    on earth as in heaven.

    Give us today our daily bread.

    Forgive us our sins

    as we forgive those who sin against us.

  • 12

    Lead us not into temptation

    but deliver us from evil.

    For the kingdom, the power,

    and the glory are yours

    now and for ever. Amen.

    Breaking of the Bread

    We break this bread to share in the body of Christ.

    Though we are many,

    we are one body,

    because we all share in one bread.

    Giving of Communion

    Alleluia. Christ our Passover has been sacrificed for us.

    Therefore let us keep the feast. Alleluia.

    The president receives the consecrated bread and wine

    If you would like to make an Act of Spiritual Communion, you may wish to use the following

    prayer, after Richard of Chichester:

    Thanks be to you, Lord Jesus Christ,

    for all the benefits you have given me,

    for all the pains and insults you have borne for me.

    Since I cannot now receive you sacramentally,

    I ask you to come spiritually into my heart.

    O most merciful redeemer, friend and brother,

    may I know you more clearly, love you more dearly,

    and follow you more nearly, day by day.

    Amen.

    Prayer after Communion

    Merciful Father,

    you gave your Son Jesus Christ to be the good shepherd,

    and in his love for us to lay down his life and rise again:

    keep us always under his protection,

    and give us grace to follow in his steps;

    through Jesus Christ our Lord.

    Amen.

    Hymn

    Christ is the world’s light, he and none other:

    born in our darkness, he became our brother;

    if we have seen him, we have seen the Father:

    Glory to God on high.

    Christ is the world’s peace, he and none other:

    no one can serve him and despise a brother;

    who else unites us, one in God the Father?

    Glory to God on high.

    Christ is the world’s life, he and none other;

    sold once for silver, murdered here, our brother.

    He who redeems us, reigns with God the Father:

    Glory to God on high.

    Give God the glory, God and none other;

    give God the glory, Spirit, Son and Father;

    give God the glory, God in man my brother;

    Glory to God on high.

    Words: F. Pratt Green (1903-2000)

    Tune: CHRISTE SANCTORUM; CP 213

    Dismissal

    May the boldness of the Spirit transform you,

    may the gentleness of the Spirit lead you,

    to serve and worship God;

    and the blessing of God almighty,

    the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit,

    be among you and remain with you always.

    Amen.

    With the power that raised Jesus from the dead

    at work within you,
