This year
sees the
stained glass windows
cleaned and restored
to their original glory.
All, in their way, tell the
story of the Christian
faith. For the first time
for ages, it is possible
to see them clearly and
marvel at their intricacy
and dazzling colour.
We
are
particularly
fortunate for we have
not only the famous
Burne
Jones
and
William
Morris
east
window, but also the
very painterly north set
designed
by
Sir
William
Blake
Richmond,
who was
one of
the greatest
artists of his day: it was
he who designed the
great mosaic scheme
for St Paul’s C
athedral
which
in
the
early
1900s drew the kind of
crowds
that
the
opening
of
Tate
Modern
did
at
the
Millennium! Perhaps
the finest of all are
the
windows
designed
by
Christopher
Whall:
not
all
his Angelic
Hierarchy
destined
for
the
clerestory
were ever completed,
but the ones which
were are clothed in
colours that are pure
theatre.

Whall
is
regarded as one of the
finest
stained

artists
of
the
20th
century. All windows
were
made
by
Whitefriars, a London
glass house famous
for its rediscovery of
the brilliant depth of
colour
used
by
medieval glaziers for
the French cathdrals,
in particular Chartres.
These
beautifu
l windows have inspired
us to see them as a
natural
starting point
for the Arts and C
rafts
Guild festival of Music,
Theatre and Art this
summer.
Their
wonderful
mix
of
colour, light, theme,
symbol
and
subject
matter make them an
ideal
subject
for
reinterpretation
through the visual arts.
For
the festival
this
year we are looking for
works inspired by any
aspect of the windows.
By
having
such
a
focussed theme this
year, w
e hope to bring
a cohesion to the art
works on display and
to introduce visitors not
only
to
the
visual
splendours of
these
magnificent
windows,
but also through them,
to
quote
George
Herbert “... the heav’n
espie”*.

week
long
festival.
Father
Rob will be
using
them
very
much as church and
cathedral
windows
were in the middle
ages, to tell the great
truths of the Christian
faith.
For those interested,
there is much more
detail on the windows
in the Holy Trinity
Sloane Street guide
book
by
Peyton
Skipwith.

HOLY TRINITY SLOANE SQUARE
It's Saturday morning
and sunlight is flooding
through the huge w

The
stained

shimmers,

All around, the church
appears
to
bear
witness to the hope Fr
Rob Gillion - who six
months on w
e are still
calling the 'new Rector'
- expressed at
his
Induction.
It was a
hope that Holy Trinity
would
continue
to
move forward. It was a
also a hope shared by
the whole family of
Holy Trinity after a year
without an Incumbent.
A
little
while
later,
sitting in the church
office after finishing a
morning prayer group,
Fr
Rob
remembers
those first few days at
his
new
parish
in
Sloane Street. "The
Induction was lovely,
but
it was also a
strange time because
the scaffolding for the
building work was still
up
and,
with
the
added darkness of
the season, it actually
made the church look
a bit gloomy. You just
felt
it

SERVICE OF
THANKSGIVING & CONFIRMATION
Sunday 31st May
On Sunday 31st May – Pentecost we will be holding a special Service
of Thanksgiving and Confirmation at 11.00am. We will be celebrating
the completion of our recent restoration works.
Our Patron and benefactor, The Earl Cadogan will be joining us to
give thanks to the Glory of God for the skill and craftsmanship of all
those involved which has left our wonderful church looking more
magnificent than ever.
We’re delighted that The Rt Revd Paul Williams, Bishop of
Kensington, will be Preaching, Celebrating and Confirming. We hope
you will be able to join us.

church had done a
fantastic job in the
Interregnum. But you
knew it was time for
someone to come and
take responsibility for
the church's vision."
You
can
tell
that
teamwork
is
a
big
issue for Fr Rob, as it
is a theme he returns
to again and again. His
belief in the power of
teamwork was forged
during his days as - in
his own words -
a
'jobbing actor.' It was a
career
he
pursued
successfully
for
15
years. "M
y father was
a clergyman and a
wonderful
preacher,"
he says, "but he told
me I should follow m
y
dream and, for a long
time, that was to act.
The theatre is like a
family and I loved that
sense of
community.
Everyone is important
in a theatre company.
Everyone has their role
and only by working
together
can
we
achieve what we set
out
to
do.
It's
a
wonderful example of
St Paul's analogy of
the body."
It was while acting as
a confidante to his
fellow actors that Fr
Rob's
thoughts
slowly
turned
to
following
his
own
father
into
the
ordained ministry. "I
found people w
anted
to talk to me about
their
troubles.
I suppose I m
ust have
been a good listener
as
well
being
prompted by the Holy
Spirit.
People were
always asking me if
I'd ever
considered
going into the church
and
eventually
I thought I should at
least
investigate it.
Like the Bible says, I
thought I'd 'put out a
fleece'
to
try
to
discover God's will.
God's w
ill - as m
uch
as we can discern it -
was
to
have
the
'jobbing
acto
r’
ordained and set on
a fascinating career
“only by working
together can we
achieve what we
set out to do.”

DEPARTURES
The Revd Canon David Hutt will be stepping down as Honorary Priest
Sacrist as from the end of March. I’d like to take this opportunity to express
my gratitude for all that he has done in support of Holy Trinity over the
years, particularly during the Interregnum. We now have a full team with
myself, Father Graham and Father Nadim to cover services, and limited
resources. Father David has asked me to pass on how happy he is to have
been of assistance and how much he has enjoyed his involvement with the
church. We are very glad that he has agreed to continue to help us out from
time to time.
The Revd Rob Gillion
As you may already be aware, Stephanie will be leaving us at the end of
April to take up a new position as PA to the Principal of the Chelsea
Academy. We are sorry to see Stephanie go but wish her all the very best in
her new position.
On a personal note, I have been so fortunate to have had such a wonderful
PA to work with me. Not only because of her efficiency and creativity but
also because of her delightful personality and gentle wisdom. She has been
such a joy to work with and will be sorely missed.
We shall have a farewell celebration after the Annual Parochial Church
Meeting on Thursday 30th April and I do hope as many of the congregation
as possible will attend. (If you would like to give a contribution towards a
farewell gift please would you send it to Max Morgan-Witts, Churchwarden
& Treasurer, through the Parish Office.) The Revd Rob Gillion
The very first time I walked into Holy Trinity I felt my soul fill with peace,
and it’s a tranquillity that even the most hectic day in the office can’t shift.
I’ve loved working here, anyone who has spent any time in our office will
tell you how warm and vibrant the atmosphere is, and it is with mixed
emotions that I say goodbye.
I’m really excited about my new post at Chelsea Academy, it’s a wonderful
opportunity for me. However I’m also genuinely sad to be leaving. I know
that under Fr Rob’s leadership, the church is going to go from strength to
strength, and I regret that I’m no longer going to be a part of his team on a
daily basis.
I’d like to say a big THANK YOU to everyone who has welcomed me so
warmly into the family of Holy Trinity. My last act as Parish Administrator
will be to add myself to the mailing list with the promise not to be a
stranger.

The
impact of this on the
culture and abilities of
our
young
people
would be tremendous
–
a
whole
new
generation would be
brought up respecting
and understanding the
importance of the Arts
in the m
odern world.
With
the
current
expertise
within
the
Music Department
at
Holy Trinity Church, we
are looking to offer
tuition in piano, organ
and singing as well
some
remuneration
towards
expenses.
Rehearsals
will
introduce
singing
games and activities to
reinforce the basics of
pitching,
pulse
and
rhythm
as
well
as
elements of
musical
notation. Furtherm
ore,
outside
the
Sunday
morning service and
rehearsals,
activities
and
trips
will
be
organised to foster a
real community spirit.
The new young choir
members w
ill have the
advantage of singing in
one
of
London’s
architecturally
most
inspiring
and
acoustically rewarding
buildings,
accompanied
by
Michael
Brough and
Oliver Lallemant on the
great
four-manual
Walker organ, whose
past
organists
have
included
the
international
virtuoso
Edwin
Lemare,
Sir
Walter Alcock and the
composer
John
Ireland. The organ is
due for a m
ajor rebuild
and restoration in the
coming few years and,
in this as in m
any other
ways,
the future of
music-m
aking at Holy
Trinity looks very bright
indeed.
We are looking for
help and advice in
establishing a choir
school
as
the
benefits to us as a
church could only be
hugely advantageous
and part of a greater
contribution
to
the
local community and
to
young
people
across London. The
choral
tradition
in
many parts of
the
country has become
but a faded history
and we aim to re-
establish the tradition
as befits ‘a cathedral
of the arts and crafts’.

our

It is a varied career
that Fr Rob believes
stands him in good
stead for his work here
at Holy Trinity. "I so
believe in the Christian
journey and that the
Church is a place of
unity in diversity. I've
worked in a national
ministry
and
in
an
intimate parish.
And
I've
also
used
my
experience
as
an
actor. Acting is about
walking alongside a
character and stepping
into their shoes so that
you can understand
them."
As a near neighbour,
and as Area Dean of
Chelsea, Fr Rob was
better acquainted than
most with Holy Trinity
when he was asked to
become
its
new
Rector.
He
says, "I loved
that the church
was open all
the time and
opened
its

everyone.
I was

comfo

of worship here
and, in fact, it
is the form

I
began with at

don't
like
being
‘theatrical’
but I love
the
theatre
of
the
Church. We need to
recognise
the
opportunity
in
the
‘Cathedral of the Arts’
to ‘have our feet on the
ground and our heads
in
heaven’
as
we
worship, with awe and
holiness,
before
a
creative God.
"I think that when we
are deciding on the
vision we have for Holy
Trinity we need to be
acutely aware of what
we have.
The very
building is magnificent
and we can help to tell
the
Christian
story
through its art.
The
music is a delight and
there
is

prayer is wonderful;
the daily office of

prayer
is
the
heartbeat
of
the
church
and
the
opportunity to focus
on

through
effective

Fr Rob has been with

Janine and Fr
Rob
have enjoyed opening
up the Rectory for
lunches for the Friends
of Holy Trinity and to
welcome newcomers.
After getting to know
the church and its
people, and listening to
their opinions, Fr Rob
is ready to begin the
next
steps in Holy
Trinity's journey. "I see
my duty as giving a
focus to our
vision.
That is something we
are now working on.
Following
a
recent
Vision Day with the
PCC w
e're highlighting
areas we feel we think
are priorities such as
working
with
young
people and schools.
We're revamping the
Arts and Crafts Guild
to
focus
more
on
Christian ministry and
I’m so pleased that,
with all her experience
as a Missioner to the
Arts, Janine has come
on
board
as
Coordinator
for
the
Guild. Over the coming
months we'll start to
get a clear picture of
where we're going and
will be producing a
Mission Action Plan.
But we're also happy
that we're doing a lot of
things very well
and
we're going to keep
doing those things."
Fr Rob is a man of
many hats. As w
ell as
being our Rector and
Area Dean he is the
visiting
Chaplain
at
The Lister Hospital and
Peter
Jones,
and
Chaplain to the new
Mayor
of
Kensington
and Chelsea. He is a
Trustee and Governor
of Holy Trinity School
and
Governor
of
Chelsea Academy. He
has contributed to a
number
of
radio
programmes and is a
regular
member
of
Terry Wogan's 'Pause
for Thought' team on
Radio 2. He says, "I'm
always aware that my
main role is as R
ector
of Holy Trinity and that
no m
atter what I do I'm
representing
Holy
Trinity. And I believe
that the m
ore I share in
the lives of people in
this
community
the
more I can reflect the
ministry
of
Holy
Trinity. We take the
church out into the
world and hope that
we can bring some of
the world back with
us."
Fr Rob is keen to pay
tribute to the w
ork of
our
form
er
Rector
Bishop
Michael
Marshall. He says,
"Bishop Michael did
fantastic things here
and he has left a
strong legacy.
Now
we have to look to
the
future.
Our
position here at the
heart of the business
community gives us
many
excitin
g
opportunities to serve
the
community
in
Christ’s name.
"This is a special
place and if I was
going to sum up what
my hope is for the
future of Holy Trinity I
would probably say
we need one or two
new initiatives and
more of the same."

Children’s Choirs
Andrew O’Brien - Director of Music
There has been a
strong music tradition
at Holy Trinity Sloane
Street
since
its
foundation
in
the
nineteenth century and
for much of that time,
until the 1980s, there
existed a full
treble
choir. W
e are looking
to
re-introduce
this
missing factor into the
life
of
the
church.
Through devoted w
ork
and inspiration,
Holy
Trinity
provides
a
vibrant
spiritual
and
physical presence in
the heart of Chelsea,
with an international
congregation befitting
a ‘world city’ such as
London.
The current
choir
consists
of
between eight and ten
professional
singers
who,
as
well
as
singing in the choir at
Holy Trinity,
perform
and
singing
in

is
fundamental
to the
education of children.
We also believe that
children should have
ample opportunity to
sing
inside
and
outside
school.
Research has shown
that a good musical
education
will
not
only
help
develop
musical skills but will
als

enhance
numerical, social and
regularly
with
such
groups as The BBC
Singers, The Sixteen,
Glyndebourne Opera,
English
Voices,
London Voices and
The Monteverdi Choir.
In form

choirs at

Department has been
driven by a desire to
improve
singing
opportunities for young
people. We believe

MAYOR’S CHAPLAIN
We are delighted to announce that Councillor Timothy Coleridge,
who is due to become Mayor of The Royal Borough of Kensington

Mayoral year. Fr Rob is due to accept his new office on Wednesday
20th May.
