As a key staff member of our Life

    Renewal program here at the

    Mission, Alan knows exactly the

troubles and temptations the men he

works with are dealing with because

    hes walked in their shoes!

Drugs and alcohol turned his life

    inside out. I would make

commitments to the Lord that I would

quit drinking and straighten up and

fly right then I would get out of jail

and be back in the same thing, Alan

says. In January of 2004, Alan was

released from jail for the last time.

Nobody wanted me because I was

    an addict, he says.

I carried all myclothes and my Biblein a garbage bag.

    His first experience with the

    Lexington Rescue Mission was a

meal. I found out that it was a

    Christian organization and I thought,

This is where I need to be. Because

of his intravenous drug use, Alan had

    contracted Hepatitis C. With the

prayers of his new friends at the

Mission and six months of treatment,

he was cured! And once he compl

our Life Renewal program, we offe

him a job as a supervisor.

Today, Alan lives in a house ne

door to the Mission and keeps an

on his guys in the Life Renewal

Program. I can deal with them

    differently because I know what

theyre doing. Ive done it myself a

I can spot insincerity in a minute.

to use that against them, but I can

    understand the situation and learn

minister to them in the proper way

    says Alan.

    When Barry welcomes men

    into our shelter, theres no

oubt that he knows what its like tobe in need. Hes been there himself.

I was disabled and living with my

ather. He found out he had cancer,

nd within a couple of months, he

    was gone, Barry says.

    Barrys father

    left him a car and

    enough money

to live on forquite a few

    years. But as

    Barry will be

    the first to

    admit,

I didnt do it right. I started smoking

crack. My car was stolen three times,

and then I broke my hip, he says.

One operation and three months later,

Barry was still having problems with

    drugs and money.

I found myself going down the

road in my wheelchair with no

money, sitting on my only clothes

which were a shirt and a pair of

pants, says Barry. With no money to

buy drugs, old friends turned Barry

    away, but the Mission didnt.

    Today, after completing our Life

    Renewal Program, Barry volunteers

four days a week at the Mission. And

hes back in school with the hope of

learning enough to get a full-time job

helping others the way he was once

helped. I have to remember where I

    came from, says Barry.

    Remember and

    understand.

    I Remember WhereI Came From

Hundreds of homeless mewomen and children wwalk the streets of Lexington

today facing the cold in search

    food and shelter.

For many, homelessnesscould have been prevented wi

    little financial help. Often, all

takes is one rent payment to k
