The Land Registry have launched a new service called Property Alert aimed at anyone who thinks their property could be at risk of fraud. How the service helps the individual to avoid becoming a victim of property fraud. Fraudsters often target properties where there is no mortgage or the owner lives elsewhere and may at- tempt to acquire ownership of a property either by using a forged document to transfer it into their own name, or by impersonating the registered owner. People can now sign up for Property Alert and register up to three properties that they wish to be monitored. Email alerts will be sent when Land Registry receives an application to change the register as well as for official searches. The individual can then judge whether or not the activity is suspicious and if they should seek further advice. For example, if you receive an email that a bank has lodged a search on your property but you haven't applied for a mortgage, you may wish to seek legal advice, report the fraud to Action Fraud, and contact the bank in question to tell them you are the owner and have not applied for a mortgage. Investigations into the authenticity of the mortgage application can then begin much earlier in the process. Make sure your property or properties are registered because if you become an innocent victim of fraud and suffer financial loss as a consequence, you may be compensated. Once registered, it is important to ensure Land Registry has up-to-date contact details so you can be easily reachable. To apply please visit the Land Registry website. Please note that Action Fraud is not responsible for the content of external websites. To report a fraud and receive a police crime reference number, call Action Fraud on 0300 123 2040 or use our online fraud reporting tool. UK Power Networks owns, operates andmanages three of the 14 electricitydistribution networks in Britain. AcrossLondon, the South-East and East Anglia, abouteight million homes and businesses depend onus for their electricity. Our job is to deliver thatelectricity to our customers safely, to “keep thelights on” and to connect new customers.

We are responsible for maintaining andmodernising our electricity networks andensuring there is adequate capacity to supportthe needs of our customers. Generally speaking,in the UK, power cuts are relatively rare and, when they do occur, they don’t last long.We are constantly investing in our electricitylines, cables, substations and other electricityinfrastructure. In 2013, we invested about £500million to improve the reliability of powersupplies.

We supported the community throughout thebad weather of last winter. During the aftermathof the Christmas storm, we provided customerswith more than 700 nights in hotels and morethan 2,000 hot meals across 50 locations, eitherpaying for restaurant meals or via food vans.

Priority Services Register. We have continued our pioneering charitypartnership with the British Red Cross tosupport vulnerable customers during powercuts. To offer extra support during power cuts,we have more than 30 employees who volunteerto go to local areas and offer our customershands-on support.

UK Power Networksruns a Priority ServicesRegister for customerswho are especiallyvulnerable in suchcircumstances, such asthe elderly or those withmedical equipmentpowered by electricityat home. Entry on theregister is not aguarantee of animmediate restoration,as it will always depend on the nature of thefault. However, an awareness of customers withadditional requirements might allow us to getassistance to them more promptly.

Liaison Officers within the EastbourneNeighbourhood Policing Team

The Eastbourne Neighbourhood Policing Team has anumber of liaison officers who work with particulargroups in the town. In the last issue we told you aboutPCSOs Kathryn Harlow and Zoe Ayres, and here arethe profiles of two more and their speciality roles.

PCSO Sue Robinson, LiaisonOfficer for the Jewish Communitysaid: ‘I have been a liaison officer for the Jewish Community inEastbourne for around four and ahalf years. The Jewish Communityare in a minority in Eastbourne andtherefore benefit from a specificpoint of contact with Sussex Police.

Before the role was introduced the community did feela little isolated and did not feel that they had a goodrapport with the local Policing Team. The 'Liaison' rolehas gone a long way to change that. As a liaison officer I visit the Synagogue once a month and assistwith any issues that may need addressing. I act as a'go between' for support needed for cultural events.I have had the opportunity to immerse myself briefly inBrighton's Jewish Community, both orthodox and progressive. This was a wonderful opportunity for me.I was present during the New Year celebrations (RoshHashana) and was allowed to be a 'fly on the wall' soto speak during the religious celebrations. This wassuch a privilege.

Although this role forms a fraction of my duties, I amfully committed to supporting the community in anyway that helps them and maintains good links withSussex Police.’

PCSO Andy Harlow is one of the Wildlife Liaison Officers, who told us: ‘I started in the role of PoliceWildlife Crime Officer (WCO) whilst based in WealdenDistrict in 2009 and have continued this in EastbourneDistrict. I decided to take up this role as I have a great

passion for wildlife and wanted to be able to focus my working attention to this topic.

As a WCO, I have received additional training to gain knowledgeand experience in dealing with matters relating to Wildlife Crime.Wildlife crime poses a serious threat to the UK. It is not confined to the countryside alone,it also occurs in urban areas. Wildlife offences include:illegal trading in endangered species, such as furs andreptile skins, ivory trade and the illegal importation oftortoises.

Crimes against endangered UK native species orspecies of conservation concern, such as disturbingbat roosts, cruelty or persecution of wildlife speciessuch as badger baiting, shooting or poisoning of wildbirds. Wildlife crime does not include incidents relatingto domestic pets. These incidents are tackled underanother legal framework.

There are WCOs working all over Sussex, who aremade up from Police Officers of different ranks and Police Community Support Officers. Sussex Policework closely with various other organisations includingDEFRA, Natural England, RSPCA, UK Border Agencyand local Wildlife Rescue groups to deliver an effectiveservice by utilising the experience, knowledge andskills that are available. Close partnership working isalso in place with other UK and International Policeforces to share intelligence and working practices.’

If you witness a suspected wildlife crime inprogress, call 999 immediately and ask for the police. For all other enquires call your local Police on 101, or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111, who will pass the information to thepolice.

Happy Paws Puppy Rescue is a small local rescue centre in Eastbourne set up with the solepurpose of saving puppies who otherwise would beput to sleep - all of whom are neglected, abused orjust unwanted.

Lisa Smart, who set up Happy Paws Puppy Rescuesupports, assists and works along side other rescue organisations to ensure that the little pupswho come in to her charge get the best chance offinding that loving forever home they so deserve.

A recent case in which the charity was involved wasthe rescue of little Mia. Little Mia is sitting behindher sister in the picture above.

They were both at risk. Lisa agreed to take Mia intoher care. When she arrived she was very skinny, timid and frightened. Lisa took her under her wingand fostered her and as time went on, lots of goodfood, attention and the best ingredient 'love' andwith the help of Lisa's two Golden Retrievers, Miathrived. Lisa went out of her way to find the perfecthome and find it she did. Mia (whose new name is

Poppy) really landed on her little paws when shewas adopted by a lovely family who were perfect for her. She now lives in a very loving, kind andcompassionate environment with people who willbe there for her and treat her as a member of their family.

Lisa said: 'working inrescue is really hardsometimes. You get to see such cruelty inflicted on these innocent little soulsthrough no fault oftheir own. However, to be in a position toget them out, foster, rehabilitate and findthat perfect foreverhome to me is simplypriceless'.

To rescue each puppy, provide vet costs, vaccinations and care adds up to an average of£400. The Happy Paws Puppy Rescue charity is always grateful for any donations no matter howsmall, as it all goes towards saving their little lives.

Donations can be sent to Lisa Smart, Happy PawsPuppy Rescue, 213 Kings Drive, EastbourneBN21 2UJ. You can follow the charity on Face book - Happy Paws Puppy Rescue.
