Exploring 1066 Country

Rye is a maritime maze of Medieval and Georgian buildings. The thriving market town of Battle is home to the very spot where King Harold fell during the fateful conflict. The Edwardian seaside resort of Bexhill-on-Sea is the birthplace of British motor racing. The quiet village of Burwash hosts Rudyard Kipling’s house ‘Batemans’. Europe’s largest beach-launched fishing fleet can be seen in Hastings where you can also enjoy the picturesque Old Town.

Herstmonceux is the perfect place for visitors to lose themselves in the magic and mystery of modern science. Northiam is a rich tapestry of thatched cottages and country pubs. Pevensey was the landing point for both the Romans and the Normans. And you must not miss the fairytale castle of Bodiam.

Visit 1066 Country and you will do far more than learn about history, you’ll live it.

www.visit1066country.com

www.visitrye.co.uk 1110 Official Rye Guide 2011

The ancient town of Rye has a long and colourful history that stretches all the way back to Roman times. However, its rise to prominence began in earnest during the Middle Ages when it was first invested as one of the two Antient Townes of the Confederation of Cinque Ports, the other being Winchelsea.

But first, the town had to be wrested back from French control. Lost to Normandy under the rule of King John, Rye was only restored to the English crown by Henry III in 1247.

Although the earliest known charter dates from 1260, there is contemporary evidence that the Cinque Ports were the brainchild of the 11th-century monarch Edward the Confessor. The charter included the original five ports of Hastings, New Romney, Hythe, Dover and Sandwich. Initially offering a support role,

Winchelsea and Rye (and other towns) later became full members.

For the inhabitants of the Cinque Ports, the Confederation represented a two-sided coin. The population was expected to maintain and man ships on behalf of the Crown while, in exchange for this military service, the ports enjoyed many privileges, most crucially, exemption from tax and tolls, and the retention of self-government.

The balance served both the crown and the population very well. However, during the 13th century, the introduction of the customs system brought a crime wave to Rye. Smuggling had begun in earnest. The initial warrants issued under these new laws were made to prevent the export of English wool. However, it was not long before the smugglers were bringing luxury goods back from the continent as well.

The local gangs gradually became highly organised and armed themselves as they moved their plunder in and out of convenient coastal towns and landing places. For centuries, the gangs ruthlessly dominated the illegal trade as government efforts failed to bring them to justice.

However, in 1821 the National Coastguard Service was set up and, with onshore and offshore patrolling, the new outfit gradually suppressed the smuggling trade. The final blow was struck against the gangs when the customs laws were reformed in the early-19th century, rendering the financial gains of smuggling inconsequential.

Despite the efforts of these criminals, Rye blossomed during the Middle Ages, becoming a major port. However, its proximity to France made it vulnerable to raiding parties. In 1339, the French attacked, burning down 52 houses and a mill. Soon after, work began on the town walls.

The first structure finished was the Landgate (the only gate of the original four that still stands today). However, the work proved in vain when, in 1377, the French attacked again, destroying almost every building in the town and making off with the bells from St Mary’s church. New stone walls were built and additional gates were added, along with improvements to the Landgate. Much of the wall that stretched between the Landgate and the now missing Strandgate still stands today.

The French raided again in 1449 but this time the defences held firm and were never tested again, finally falling into disrepair.

One other structure featured in the town’s defences although its origins are shrouded in mystery. The Ypres Tower appears to have been constructed in the 14th century, although there may have been a royal castle on the site a hundred years earlier. Called Baddings Tower at the time, the Ypres Tower is a square stone structure, standing 40-feet high with three-quarter round towers. It has changed little down the centuries but has served for as defensive position, a court, a prison, a soup kitchen, a mortuary and, finally, a museum.

Another defensive measure was built between Rye and Winchelsea around 1512. A circular turret, Camber Castle was upgraded further in 1539 to become one of Henry VIII’s forts that lined the southern shore of England. However, the silting of the Camber meant that the position was obsolete by the end of the 16th century and in 1637 it was disbanded.

Winchelsea was not without defences of its own. In fact, the town that now exists on the site was planned on a grid pattern to, among other things, facilitate movement of defences in time of attack. At the time, the town, although built on a hilltop, had a flourishing port and was a crucial part of the wine trade. However, the silted harbour, raids from the French and the Spanish on top of a Black Death epidemic hit the town’s fortunes hard.

Today, the town maintains its medieval setting and many of the original stone gates and buildings, plus one of the largest collection of medieval wine cellars in the country.

Art & LiteratureRye has been the inspiration and home to some of literature’s greatest names down the centuries, many of whom made their residence at Lamb House in West Street.

Perhaps the most prominent inhabitant of the property was the American-born writer Henry James, author of such classics as The Portrait of a Lady and The Turn of the Screw. James occupied Lamb House for 18 years.

EF Benson, famed for his Mapp and Lucia social comedies, lived in the house from 1917 to 1930. Occasionally, his brother AC Benson, a noted writer himself, would join him there.

More recently, Indian-born novelist and biographer Rumer Godden, author of Black Narcissus, A Kindle of Kittens and The Diddakoi, lived there between 1967 and 1974.

Other literary influences lie all around Rye. The noted Jacobean playwright John Fletcher was born in the town. A contemporary of William Shakespeare, he succeeded the Bard as the house playwright for the King’s Men.

The poet and writer Radclyffe Hall lived in several houses around town between 1928 and 1943.

to move away in later life, she fictionalized Rye Harbour as Westling in her Romney Marsh books.

The children’s adventure writer Malcolm Saville set many of his Lone Pine stories in Rye, while Russell Thorndike’s Dr Syn smuggling tales take place on Romney Marsh.

Rye has been no less inspirational to artists. One of the most celebrated of these is the 17th-century Flemish painter Sir Anthony van Dyck. Famed for his baroque style, van Dyck made several detailed drawings of the town.

Watercolourist JMW Turner also used the land and seascapes around Rye and Winchelsea to inform his work, as did the American-born painter James Whistler.

Many artists opted to live in the town. Among these were the husband and wife partnership of Howard Gull Stormont and Mary Sapworth. The Stormonts were also collectors of art and, after their deaths, the collection was left in trust for

the people of Rye. In addition, an endowment fund was provided to establish an art gallery in the town; Rye Art Gallery can now be found on the High Street.

Another husband and wife pairing who made their home in Rye was Robert Sang MacKechnie and Margaret Barnard. MacKechnie set up the influential 7 & 5 Society, which saw involvement from many of the great early-20th century artists.

During the late 19th century, an artists’ colony sprung up around Rye and Winchelsea that saw many great names pass through. William Makepeace Thackery set the novel Denis Duval in Winchelsea and Ford Madox Ford settled in the town after 1901.

American Pulitzer Prize-winning poet Conrad Aiken lived in Jeakes House on Mermaid Street from 1923 until 1939. His daughter Joan was born here and went on to become a noted children’s author (The Wolves of Willoughby Chase).

Coast & CountrysideRye’s location on the edge of Romney Marsh just a few short miles from the sea puts it in a perfect place to explore diverse natural landscapes on foot, bicycle or boat.

Nearby Camber Sands offers visitors a huge expanse of white sand beach and a large dune system to explore, making the beach a popular destination on summer’s days.

On the other side of the river Rother’s estuary lies Rye Harbour and its 800-acre nature reserve that runs along the shoreline.

Established in 1970, the reserve is a mix of saltmarsh, sand, scrub and woodland, providing plenty of habitat for varying sea and coastal birds. The site offers many walking paths – including one that loops around the entire reserve – and also has four hides where visitors can observe wildlife more closely.

The area is also of historic interest, providing a home for a variety of military fortifications from the 16th, 17th and 20th centuries, and a lifeboat station, which once housed the Mary Stanford lifeboat, tragically lost at sea with all hands in 1928.

Although called Camber Castle, the fort is actually between Rye Harbour and Winchelsea. At the time of its construction

The Royal Military Canal path stretches for 28 miles from Seabrook in Kent to Cliff End in East Sussex. Along the way, it passes through Rye and offers visitors opportunities for boating and fishing. Now a popular waterway, the canal was initially a defensive structure for keeping out invaders and was not designed for navigation. Walkers and cyclists can also get involved, enjoying the scenery and wildlife from the tow path that runs alongside.

To the east of Rye lies Romney Marsh, a huge wetland that is home to several rural communities. Gradually reclaimed over the centuries, the marsh is now dominated by agriculture, particularly sheep. Interestingly, malaria was a major problem in the area during the Middle Ages until the construction of the Royal Military Canal improved drainage.

The marsh is sheltered from the sea by a large headland made up of shingle and known as Dungeness. It is home to a quirky village of predominantly wooden homes, two lighthouses and a modern nuclear power station. The artist and film director Derek Jarman moved to Dungeness in the late-80s, building a magnificent garden of metal sculptures before his death in 1994.

in the 16th century, the site was a shingle spit offering protection to Rye Bay and the approaches to the local towns. However, over time, the area silted up and is now inland. The castle is open to the public on Saturday and Sunday afternoons during the summer.

Rye Bay is a pleasant area for boating, while the rivers Rother and Tilling are popular with canoeists: as is the Royal Military Canal, which is also home to many barges.

At the foot of the hill upon which stands Winchelsea is another small community known as Winchelsea Beach. It is largely residential but is also home to a long shingle beach with magnificent views over the Rye Bay and Rother estuary.

For those keen on walking, it is worth noting that the Saxon Shore Way passes Rye, from Gravesend in north Kent round the coastline to Hastings in East Sussex. The walk is named after the historic fortifications built at the end of the Roman occupation of Britain. Stretching 160 miles in total, it takes in some of the most impressive coastal scenery in southern England. Naturally, the coastline of Britain has changed significantly over the past 2,000 years so much of the route is now inland.

Dungeness is also the terminus for the Romney, Hythe and Dymchurch narrow gauge railway. Constructed during the 1920s, the railway links the Dungeness with Hythe in Kent, passing through Romney, Dymchurch and several other stops along the way. All 10 original locomotives are still in use, plus three more have been added to the fleet.

Restaurants line the High Street, Cinque Ports Street and the quayside offering a diverse range of cuisines - English, Italian, Indian, Thai, etc.If a restaurant seems a bit too formal for your taste, try one of the many pubs or bars dotted around the citadel, many of which also serve food. There is even a nightclub for those who like to party into the small hours.

Shopping & LeisureRye is home to a thriving independent business community with a particular focus on local produce and the arts.Every Wednesday morning, the Rye Farmers’ Market takes place on the Strand Quay, providing an outlet for the local farmers and smallholders to sell their local produce and crafts. In addition, every Thursday, a general market is held in the Cattlemarket car park by the railway station.Approximately 20 working fishing boats operate out of Rye, using the recently refurbished Simmons Quay as their base. The boats are responsible for bringing in scallops, plaice, sole and cod from Rye Bay. Fresh fish can be bought from several stalls along the quayside.

Rye also has many restaurants to offer taking in many cuisines - English, Italian, Indian, Thai, etc. When you are not eating and relaxing, perhaps you might find time to visit Rye’s array of independent shops and galleries.

Rye always has something for the visitor to do. Hardly surprisingly, given the town’s close association with the sea and surrounding farms, food features heavily in Rye’s major festivals.

February sees the return of the popular Rye Bay Scallop Week. Local restaurants band together to offer the finest selection of scallop-based dishes in celebration of the locally caught shellfish.

Early in August, the Maritime Festival meets on the Strand Quay, Rye, to celebrate the town’s rich nautical heritage. In previous years, the event has included lifeboat demonstrations, maritime exhibitions, live entertainment and raft races.

The well established Rye Arts Festival runs for two weeks every September. The festival is a showcase for internationally renowned musicians, writers and artists to gather and perform. It is a highlight in the Rye calendar and will be celebrating its 40th anniversary in 2011.

Dates of events correct at time of going to press, but may change. For further details and confirmation of any of the events please contact Rye Tourist Information Centre on 01797 229049 or go to www.visitrye.co.uk/event-diary.asp

Sainsbury’s as a company has been built upon a heritage of providing customers with healthy, safe, fresh and tasty food.

Visit your local Sainsbury’s

Our existing stores in New Romney and St Leonards already offer great products at fair prices to many local people.

We would like to bring this offer closer to the people of Rye and are therefore progressing plans for a new store on a site we own in the town.

We hope that you can support our plans for a new store in Rye. In the meantime please visit our stores at New Romney, St Leonards and elsewhere.

For more information on our great products and services and the location of our nearest stores please visit www.sainsburys.co.uk.

If approved, the new store would provide a high quality, modern shopping experience for both Rye residents and tourists who visit the area.

Alternatively if you want more information on our new store proposals for Rye, please call 0845 602 1151.
