Our ‘Angel in the wings’ receives Brauser Award Local arts advocate and philanthropist Mary
Jean “Jeanie” (nee Mosch) Satterwhite has been chosen to receive the 2013 Lester Brauser Community Theatre Appreciation Award.
Established in 2001, the Brauser Award is presented to an individual whose work makes community theatre possible in the Bradford area. It is named after theatre enthusiast the late Lester Brauser.
“Jeanie has been our angel in the wings since BLT started,” said Bradford Little Theatre president Nanci K. Garris. “She not only hosted BLT’s kick-off event at her home 16 years ago, she has also been
a sustaining member and an inspiration to BLT to make it possible for anyone to take part in community theatre, whether backstage or on stage. In particular, we appreciate her passion for encouraging young people to express themselves, to find their voices, and to stretch their wings.” “We have always known that we could turn to her for help and guidance,” said Garris. The award is being presented at the opening curtain of Friday’s performance; an informal reception will follow the production. A guest book will also be available for well-wishers to sign at all three performances.
4-H Volunteer Recognition Sunday
Just before opening curtain on Sunday, Ashley Wian, a senior at Smethport Area High School and vice president/secretary of the McKean 4-H Teen Leadership Club, will acknowledge the 4-H volunteers. The McKean County 4-H program, which is the youth development outreach of Penn State Extension, is for boys and girls aged 8-19 with 4-H Cloverbuds for ages 5-7. There are currently more than 40 screened volunteers leading 20 4-H clubs in the county. Project
areas include livestock, horse, dairy, rabbits and cavies, teen leadership, exchange, camping, shooting sports, robotics, the outdoors, and theatre arts, with many more opportunities to teach life skills and positive youth development through a wide variety of content areas. For more information about how to get involved as a member or volunteer in the McKean County 4-H club program, call the Extension Office, check out the website, http://extension.psu.edu/mckean/programs/4-h or find us on Facebook.

Directors’ Notes
Diane Kerner Arnett, co-director: The play you are seeing today is far different – and richer than – the play I originally envisioned. Insights from Ann and Michael have added new dimension to this comic retelling of the Norwegian folk tale “East of the Sun, West of the Moon.” The imaginations of the tech crew – all of them – have done magic with the set, lighting, makeup and props. With many actors making their stage debuts, the performers have impressed me with not only their hard work, but also their genuine support of each other. If the story line seems familiar, it’s because it dates back to the myth of Psyche and Cupid. It arose in Arthurian legend with the tale of the Green Knight. It also spawned “Beauty and the Beast” and reappeared in the movie “Shrek.” D.L. Ashliman’s translation of the original story, my favorite, is online at http://www.pitt.edu/~dash/norway034.html or for traditionalists like me, illustrator P.J. Lynch offers the book “East o’ the Sun and West o’ the Moon.” Like the smart and spunky heroines of The Snow Queen and The Wizard of Oz, Snowdrop leads us on adventure – one which proves again that it is a person’s character, not appearance, that matters. Ann Dunkerton, co-director: Directing has been a new experience – thank you, Diane, for giving me the opportunity. You and Michael have been a great team to work with! It was a lot of fun watching Embrissa cast her spell, turning Codi into a bear for the “lovely” Princess Long Nose. We had a terrific cast with the cutest trolls, sweetest hags and smartest heroine. Special thanks to my husband Tom who has been so supportive of my crazy schedule over the past few weeks. Michael McLanahan, assistant director: This is the first time that I’ve been an assistant director for a Bradford Little Theatre production. In my opinion, the most unique aspect of my role in the production is being able to watch it come to life on stage. You are in for a unique experience today and will be amazed at the amount of talent you see. We are very fortunate to have such an amazingly talented cast and crew, and we are so grateful for the hours of dedication they have put into making this production a success. I would also like to thank those of you in the audience. By attending, you are supporting community theatre and ensuring that it will be able to continue to grow and prosper. In closing, I would like to welcome you on the journey “East of the Sun.”

He has previously appeared in “The Wizard of Oz” and “Good News” at BAHS and “Thoroughly Modern Millie” at Fretz Middle School where he, too, was a Fretzican Idol. * Rawny Reed (Snowdrop) says: “I have had a blast working on my first BLT show. It’s been six years since I was last on stage and I’m thankful for the opportunity to act again. Special thanks to my biggest encouragers – my husband and my ‘human things’ Peighton and Dawkins.”

A first grade teacher at GGB and mother of two says: “I enjoy a challenge! Thank you to the directors, cast and crew for a fun show!”
* Chelsea Place (Sisters and Hag Brill) is also making her first appearance on stage. She says: “Thank you to my sister Hannah for encouraging me to audition for this show, and to my husband Adam for continuously running my lines with me. I have had a lot of fun and learned a lot. I will be back in another show soon!”
Lori Johnson (Sisters and Hag Hug) debuted in BLT’s “The Marvelous Wonderettes” in the fall. She says: “Thank you to my family – Troy, Tori and Jacob – for putting up with my schedule the past few weeks. A big thank you also to my sister Hag, Chelsea, for remembering my lines for me. It’s been fun!”
