East Mesa Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) ~ A Global Mission Church ~ Hi everyone. Just some random thoughts as we say goodbye to a surprisingly pleasant May and prepare for the coming inferno that is summer in the Valley of the Sun. Hoping to get my cast off Friday and possibly resume driving within the next two weeks. With that in mind: A former hospice colleague lost her daughter to a car accident a couple of weeks back. As we age, a frustration we all deal with are diminished reflexes; weakening vision and impaired motor skills that lessen our independence. In my years as a Chaplain, I had patients struggling with this and realizing changes had to be made in their daily lives; and one issue that often came up was the letting go of independence by not driving anymore. None of us want to be responsible for a car accident that results in loss of property – or worse. The good news is; with the introduction in recent years of Lyft and Uber, finding ways to get around isn’t as challenging as it once was. Since facing two periods of having to hang up my keys: following my stroke and now, breaking a finger and having just one hand; Jo and I found another alternative – Valley Metro at 602-716-2200. For $4 to and from, they will gladly take you almost anywhere within our Metroplex. All you have to do is call and have them come take you to their main office for an assessment and, within two weeks, you’ll be approved for their services. $4 a pop may seem a little pricey – but they may be able to work with you on that. And $4 isn’t much compared to the pain you may save yourself or others from. See you Sunday, Pastor Nick Upcoming Events: June 9 Pentecost – wear colors of the flame – we will have a potluck June 19 2:30 pm – Pastor Nick’s Bible Study – He Chose the Nails June 22 10am -1pm – Ed Walsh will hold another Good Grief Day. July 7 Celebrating July 4 we will have an indoor picnic for fellowship July 21 3-5pm – Game Day with snacks Aug 11 3-5pm – Game Day with snacks Sept 13 Faith & Family Night at the ballpark – Dback vs Cincinnati Reds

Hi everyone.

NEW MEMBER CORNER

Welcome to David Hoglund who joined the church on Sunday, April 28. David was born in upper Michigan and moved to northern Minnesota where he spent most of his career. His friends Mary Thomas and Marj Stimac brought him to East Mesa. He was raised Catholic and tried many churches during his stay in Michigan/Minnesota. David has been on medical disability since 2009. David’s hobbies include smoking foods – i.e., ribs, briskets, pulled pork and salmon. He is a cabinet maker by trade, he loves to go golfing and fishing. David has two sisters and several cousins. He lost his wonderful wife of 46 years in October 2018. He says he is “an open book” and willing to help out wherever he physically can. Welcome to East Mesa Christian Church. We are so glad you are here.

LOCAL SHORT-TERM MISSION PROJECT: During the months of May and June bring NEW flip flops to support the Rev. Donna Christine Park’s mission “WAMMS”. Walk a mile in my shoes. The flip flops will be donated to local charities. Put your flip flops in the blue tub. Thank you

LOCAL SUMMER MISSION PROJECT:

Summer 2019 Mission Project: Water in the Desert It’s that time of year again with temperatures on the rise and we will be collecting

bottled water to be delivered to the City of Mesa for distribution to the homeless and

to various agencies in the valley including A New Leaf-East Valley Men’s Center, Paz

de Cristo, and St. Vincent de Paul. Bring your bottled water in each week and leave it at the “Water in the Desert” station

located in the narthex.
