When researching any of these jobs/employers, it is important to consider:

Who are the client group/groups?

Do I need to already have a qualification in Care/Social Care?

What kind of training will be provided? Is it on-going? To what level?

What is the rate of pay? Does this increase with level of qualification held? Other benefits?

Is the PVG check paid for by the employer or me?

Is a driving licence essential?

If I have a licence, do I need a car or can a vehicle be provided?

What geographic area does the employer cover?

What kind of support would I get once in the job?

Local Computer Skills Support/Training in East Lothian

Provider: East Lothian Council Libraries You need to become a member of the Library to use any the East Lothian Libraries services, but this is really easy to do. At any of the Libraries in East Lothian, you need to show two proofs of ID, one which should show your current address. Alternatively, if you have a concessionary travel card, this can be used as your Library Card. You can also use library PCs and Wi-Fi free of charge.

Learning Computer Basics – for complete beginners Delivered in all local Libraries, this course is 2 hours per week, for 3 weeks and is completely free. For complete beginners, the classes are very small, usually with only 3 or 4 people, who will all be at the same level and feeling the same as you. The course covers the basics including turning on the computer, using the mouse and getting an e-mail address, sending and checking e-mails and using the internet. Some libraries have regular sessions, while others may take your details and contact you direct when they have enough demand to run a course. Ask in your local Library – they may also contact other libraries for you to see if there are any spaces available elsewhere. (This course is NOT focussed on Employability Skills)

Computer Buddies Scheme – for those who have the Basics but need a little more help If you have only recently learnt to use a computer, you'll know that it is easy to forget how to do something. You may have course notes or a book, but you might also like to sign up for our computer buddies’ scheme. Buddies are members of the public who have volunteered to provide help to beginners in computing. They may not necessarily be computer experts, and they are not tutors, but they have the skills and understanding to help a new computer user practice their skills such as basic word processing, email and the internet. We try to match you up with a computer buddy. Your buddy sits with you when you work at a library computer at a time that suits you both. He or she will be there just to give you a hand if you get stuck, and maybe show you a few new tricks. You and your buddy will usually meet at a time to suit you both for an hour a week for up to six weeks. This can be flexible and you and your buddy can arrange what suits you best. Please send your details to [email protected]. Or call into your local Library to enquire.
