The key is knowing what efforts are worth it, and which ones backfire.1. EXPECTING THE WORSTTeenagers get a bad rap. Many parents approach raising teenagers as an ordeal, believing they can only watch helplessly as their lovable children transform into unpredictable monsters. But that sets you – and your teen – up for several unhappy, unsatisfying years together. The message we give teenagers is that they’re only ‘good’ if they’re not doing ‘bad’ things – such as doing drugs, hanging around with the wrong crowd, or having sex. Instead focus on your child’s interests and hobbies, even if you don’t under-stand them. You could open a new path of communication, reconnect with the child you love, and learn something new.

2. READING TOO MANY PARENTING BOOKSRather than trusting their instincts, many parents turn to outside experts for advice on how to raise teens. Parents can tie themselves into knots trying to follow the advice they read in books. It’s not that parenting books are bad. But rather use books to get perspective on confusing behavior, and then put the book down and trust that you’ve learned what you need to learn. Get clear about what matters most to you and your family.

3. SWEATING THE SMALL STUFFMaybe you don’t like your tween daughter’s haircut or choice of clothes. Or perhaps she didn’t get the part in the play you know she deserves. But before you step in, look at the big picture. Challenge yourself to step back and let your child know you’re there for them.

4. IGNORING THE BIG STUFFIf you suspect your child is using alcohol or drugs, do

not look the other way. Even if it’s “just” alcohol – or even if it reminds you of your own youth

– you must take action now, before it becomes a bigger problem.

Watch for unexplained changes in your teen’s behavior, appearance, academic

performance, and friends. And remember, it’s not just illicit

drugs that are abused now – prescription drugs and even

cough medicines and household products

are also in the mix.Take these signs seriously

and get involved. Safeguard all the medicines you have. Know

which products are in your home and how much medication is in each package

or bottle.

5. TOO MUCH – OR TOO LITTLE – DISCIPLINE

Some parents, sensing a loss of control over their teens’ behavior, crack down every time their child steps out of line. Others avoid all conflict for fear their teens will push them away. You don’t have to do either of those things. It’s about finding a balance between obedience and freedom.

As their parent, it’s up to you to set your family’s core values and communicate them through your words and actions. That’s being an authoritative parent, an approach that helps children develop the skills they need to govern themselves in appropriate ways.

Remember, your influence runs deeper than you may think. Most teens say they want to spend more time with their parents. Keep making time for your child throughout the tween and teen years. Even when it doesn’t show, you provide the solid ground they know they can always come home to.

Your child isn’t a little kid anymore. He or she is a teen, or a tween – and it’s time to tweak your parenting skills to keep up with them. Yes, they’re probably moodier now than when they were young. And you have

new things to think about, like curfews, dating, new drivers, and friends who make you raise your eyebrows. No doubt about it: Your teen, or tween, will test your limits, and your patience. But they’re still

your child. And, though they won’t admit it, they still need you …

AWSUM Delivered directly to the parents through the school!

Sometimes life throws you some old tiles and then you have two options: live with it, or paint and stamp it! Save yourself a heap of cash by opting for this very clever stamp that can be used in any number of ways.

By: Germarie Bruwer and Margaux Tait from Homeology.co.za

My kitchen had been in desperate need of a tiled splash-back because unlike most old homes, I wasn’t blessed with horrid old kitchen tiles.

1.Cut 16mm chip board to the size you want your panel to be, minus 2.5mm on all 4 sides. This will ensure that the tiles hang over the wood a little bit to create a nice shadow line.

2. Fix 2 mirror fixings to the back — it’s easier to do this first otherwise you risk breaking a tile or two.

3. The stamp size is 150mm x150mm x 150mm so I used some very inexpensive white tiles to the same size. Fix the tiles to the panel using a tile

adhesive, leaving a 2mm space between them.

4. Use grout to fill in the spaces and let it dry for a couple of hours.

5. Prime the tiles with a standard tile primer — there are many brands on the market — and then let it cure for 24 hours.

6. Then STAMP

7. After the pattern had dried for a couple of hours, you’ll need to seal it with a craft sealer like Harlequin Paint’s Decorator’s Varnish. It’s a clear coat that will ensure that you can wipe down the tiles when they get wet or dirty.

WHAT YOU NEED:• 3 grapefruits• 2 tbls brown sugar (approx)

WHAT TO DO:• Set the oven to grill and place a

rack in the middle shelf.

• Cut grapefruits evenly in half, slice 2-3mm off each base to allow grapefruits to rest flat without rolling. If using a grapefruit knife, carefully cut along the rim of the flesh before cutting into 4 or 8 segments.• Place grapefruits on a baking sheets, flesh side up, and sprinkle each half with approximately 1 tsp

of brown sugar to taste.• Grill for about 10-15 minutes until flecked and speckled.Serve plain or with yoghurt.

GRILLED GRAPE FRUITSAt the very tail-end of winter the grape fruit is in full swing.

I started serving these zesty and yet slightly warming delicacies on cooler spring retreat mornings. There is something intrinsically cheerful about the smell of grapefruits that make them a welcome

addition to a breakfast spread. Select ruby grapefruits for their vibrant colour and richer antioxidant content and use a grapefruit knife to cut into segments before grilling for easier eating.

The sprinkle of brown sugar will melt into the grapefruit as it caramelizes, softening the bitterness and giving the surface a perfectly radiant glow. A joyous and juicy way to begin the day.

Grade 10 Adventure Camp

Pre-Primary Creepy Crawly ThemeLilyfontein School hosted a cross country meet at Senati (near Crossways) this year

due to renovation of our own cross country course. Over 300 children took part from 23 different schools. Lilyfontein runners were particularly excited to be running on a new and challenging cross country course. Obstacles included roots, logs and uneven surfaces. Add to this the wild life obstacles -buck, monkeys and plenty of cows and the rainy weather conditions and reasons for the excitement become obvious. True to form Lilyfontein School dished up a real adventure!

Grade 5, 6 and 7 learners took part in the 2014 SACEE poetry competition. They were rewarded for their amazing poetry writing with gold and silver awards.

The grade 9’s walked the coastline from Nahoon Reef to Eastern beach to see the cliffs, caves, arches, stacks and stumps they have been learning about in their geography lessons.

Research conducted at Lilyfontein shows that adventure-based activities equip learners with certain meta-cognitive strategies that will help them to be better problem solvers, to cope better with decision-making and to develop their ability to handle anxiety. The objective of the Grade 10 camp is to test all the skills that have been taught through the Lilyfontein Adventure programme from Grade 1. Teams paddle, navigate, build shelters, hike, make decisions as a team, complete a bush first aid task, archery, raft building, rock jumping, complete team initiative challenges, light a fire with only a flint and abseil 100m.

The Lilyfontein Girls off to a flying start. U10 boys chasing the pack.

Every day is an adventure at Lilyfontein.

It’s not all rock climbing and having fun – there’s work to be done too. Joshua Trollip, Tiaan Coetzer, Ntuthuzelo Mbadi and Ramudzuli Mulaudzi hard a work.

Cameron Lewis, Uzile Ngumbela, Angus Pietrucci, Joe Roberts, Denzel Boya, Simone Harnden, Yolanda Shabangu and Illonka Eayrs stand in the shelter they built from what they could find in their environment and will sleep in for 2 nights.

Earlyact Club Visits EL PetpalsOn Friday, 1 August, we supported Reach for a Dream’s National Slipper Day. It was very interesting to see all the different types of slippers. The weather was quite cold, so we all really enjoyed having warm, cozy feet! Some people wished that we could wear our slippers every day!

The Foundation Phase learners went on a trip around the world in their concert, Power for the Planet. Aliens came down to earth with a power crystal which would give one country a power supply until the end of time. Each class had to try to convince the aliens that their county should get the crystal. In the end the winning country was South Africa! Every Foundation Phase learner from Grade R to 3 participated and great fun was had by all. Even the teachers did a dance!

At Beaconhurst we have been running a Registered International Computer Driving Licence (ICDL) Centre for over 10 years. Many students have completed the course successfully at our centre. Adults as well as learners from other schools are welcome to do the course (that takes place after hours) at our centre.

The Benefits of having an ICDL qualification:• Internationally recognised qualification• Improved job and study prospects• Proven increase in productivity• Reduction in IT support costs• Increased essential IT skills levels• Increased confidence in computer use• Reduced stress levels• Platform to higher-level IT education

‘n Graad 10 - leerder van Beaconhurst Skool, Marco van Greunen, het aan die ATKV se Nasionale Afrikaanse Olimpiade deelgeneem. Hy het stof in die oë van baie ander Oos-Kaap deelnemers geskop toe hy die tweede plek in die provinsie losgeslaan het. Dit was Marco se eerste deelname aan die senior Olimpiade en Beaconhurst is baie trots op sy uitmuntende prestasie.

On Wednesday, 20 August 2014 Buffalo City Traffic Officer Joloza and Jabu the Jackal visited all the learners at Beaconhurst Primary. The learners were divided into grades and were given practical demonstrations on road safety. Port Rex Technical High School

Selborne College Sport Results

Port Rex Technical High School has its roots in the Technical Section of the East London Technical College [1928 - 1968]. In 1968, day scholars of the Technical and Commercial divisions separated from the Technical

College to form the East London Technical High School and the East London Commercial High School.

Mr. Kenny Clayton and Colonel Graham Du Toit together with the P.R.O. from the East London Technical College display a copy of

the original poster which advertised the opening of the Technical College 0n 6 February 1928.

In 1974, on a suggestion by the then headmaster, Dr Johan Brittz, the East London Technical High School changed its name to Port Rex Technical High School. Dr Brittz was influential in the design of the current Port Rex school badge.

By the early 1980s, the premises in Lukin Road had become too cramped to house three separate educational institutions. The De La Salle College [1935 - 1976] in Devereaux Avenue became available and was bought from the Irish Catholic Brothers for R 6 million. Dr Brittz was again influential in negotiations with the

Public Works Department so that the De La Salle property was allocated to Port Rex Technical High School. After major extensions amounting to R 3 million, the pupils and teachers trekked to the new premises on 9 August 1982.

In 1983, Mr Piet Venter was appointed as the new headmaster, he was then succeded by Mr Neville Rudman in 1997 and the current headmaster Mr Rob Piderit was appointed in 1999. The school colours, Cambridge University blue and maroon have an interesting history. Mr Lorton, early Head of Technology at the East London Technical College studied

at the Imperial College in London, where maroon was worn. Similarly, Mr Shannon, early Head of Commerce at the East London Technical College, studied at Cambridge University, hence the colour blue. Our motto, “Mente-et-Manu” ~ meaning “With mind and hand”, has its origin in the old East London Technical College. The four Sports Houses : CHRISTOPHER, BISSEKER, COWIE, and BOWIE were named after four Board Councillors who oversaw the East London Technical College and contributed much to Technical Education in the Border Region.

A BRIEF OUTLINE OF OUR HISTORY

Founders’ Day 2014 held on 15 August 2014 was a special occasion for staff, learners and Old Scholars. We paid tribute to past pupils and staff members who have contributed to the development and good name of our school by the laying of wreaths.

Mr Clarence Randall, the Head Prefect of 2004 and Mr Graham Cowley, also an Old Scholar, were our guest speakers. They entertained us with stories and incidents that occurred long ago encouraged our learners to work hard and believe in themselves in order to be successful in the future. The festivities consisting of a finger lunch and reminisces in the hall were followed by a fun-filled Derby Day against Stirling High School later in the day. Indeed, an unforgettable day.
