In this season of gratitude and giving, I wanted to take this opportunity to share my appreciation for our East High community: Salt Lake City School District’s neighbors, parents, students, faculty, and staff. This community is incredibly generous to our students. You parents give your time and talents: serving on PTA, School Community Council, volunteering with various clubs and organizations, literally cheering on and supporting your children every step of the way. Our teachers go above and beyond: tutoring students, volunteering on committees, advising student clubs, taking home grading and additional work each night, designing and planning curriculum that will ignite the learning fire in our students. Our extensive, talented staff supports all we do here: ensuring students a safe, clean, comfortable facility in which to learn, keeping the gears well-oiled and in motion in our offices, supporting students and faculty in ways that go unnoticed because they do it so well.

This is just a small sample of what this community has accomplished together: The Leopard Boutique (our clothing pantry) sees roughly sixty students a week and had so many donations this year they had to hold a major give-away earlier this fall; there was simply not enough room to house the many clothing contributions from our community. “The Stash,” East’s food pantry, stays busy feeding over 100 students a day, whether they’re in need of a snack to help them get through the day or are picking up a few groceries on their way home. The class of 2017 earned over 9.5 million dollars in

scholarships thanks in part to local businesses, organizations, teachers’ support and letters of recommendation, supportive parents, and especially a group of staff dedicated to helping students earn and apply for scholarships so their college dreams can become a reality.

The saying is that it takes a village to raise a child: our village is the very best! I see acts every day that demonstrate how this community invests themselves in our up and coming generation. I would be remiss to not take this chance to share my appreciation for every cog that keeps this machine running. What we give our students here is invaluable. As the proverb goes: education is a gift that none can take away. I am grateful for the generosity, dedication, and sacrifice of our community that ensures EHS Leopards leave here with a priceless gift.

SCHOLARSHIPS

ANNOUNCING THE STERLING SCHOLAR COMPETITION

If you are a senior, have a strong grade point, are involved in community service, and have held leadership positions in school or the community, you should apply to be a Sterling Scholar. Each year The Deseret Morning News and KSL Television sponsor this contest to recognize outstanding high school seniors in Utah and to award them cash prizes and scholarship possibilities to help with their college expenses.

To be selected as a Sterling Scholar nominee, students must demonstrate activity and interest in an area of high school education, characterized by one of the program’s categories: English, Mathematics, Science, Social Science, Computer Technology, Trade and Technical Education, Family and Consumer Sciences, Foreign Language, Business and Marketing, Speech and Drama, Visual Arts, Vocal Performance, and Dance. If you feel qualified to apply for more than one category, you may do so by filling out a separate application for each. Students must also have high academic scores and exhibit their involvement in service to the school and community.

Students may pick up an application for the Sterling Scholar Program in the Counseling Center, Main Office, or in Mrs. Hebert’s English classroom, D-204. Completed applications must be turned in to Mrs. Hebert’s room by 2:30 p.m. on Friday, December 1. East Girl’s Lacrosse

The School District held a meeting in November to consider adopting Boy’s and Girl’s Lacrosse as a sanctioned sport. The meeting was great and there was a lot of excitement about bringing on lacrosse as a school sport. There was also information about how much Girl’s Lacrosse, in particular, would be welcome in the schools. We expect a formal vote soon to make lacrosse an official school sport! The East Girl’s Lacrosse Team has started practicing with their Head Coach Megan McCleary. Coach McCleary is a Health teacher at East and is an experienced player and coach. Any girls interested in playing on the team should talk to Ms. McCleary.

STUDENT SERVICES

Sleep Well - Learn More!

On Nov 4, DownEast Company presented East High students and families with 90 new, free mattresses on the go! These amazing twin sized, memory foam mattresses have a lavender cooling shell and came with a memory foam pillow and carry strap. Everyone with a new mattress was overjoyed! As there was still demand, DownEast made a second donation a few days later of another 42 mattresses. It is their goal to donate a mattress-on-the-go for every mattress sold and help those in need, sleep better. If you need a mattress see Kris Barta in Student Services.

Thank you to Isaac Florence, his family, the EHS PTA and EHS Student and Family Support for assembling and distributing 45 hearty and caring Thanksgiving gift sacks last week. Because of this great joint effort many East High families had a little more joy at their holiday table this Thanksgiving.

PTSA

EAST COMMUNITY

To all the East families,

Warm holiday greetings to the East High School community. It is hard to believe that the 2017-2018 school year is almost halfway through. The East PTSA is delighted to continue to play an integral role in the social, educational development of our students. This could not be possible without awesome volunteers like you.

Whether you serve as a Pantry/Stash volunteer, Brown Bag coordinator, Helper with freshman fair and registration, sending numerous emails, creating an outstanding newsletter, making meals for the faculty and staff or supporting our fundraisers, or simply signing up to be a member of the East High PTSA, every aspect of what you do, embody the very spirit of our PTSA.

We started out the holiday season with an outstanding young man, Isaac Florence, and his Eagle Project, which doubled last year’s numbers by providing food for 50 East families (see Student Services page for photos). The families received an overflowing bag of groceries and supplies for the holiday week and a gift card. I thank everyone who participated in this project, those who provided and those we provided for. Our school community is made up of a variety of individuals from all walks of life and together we make up our East Family. Together we support each other. With the help of

the spectacular Kris Barta and her crew, our surrounding community together will be able to help that many families and more for the Holidays. Many classes and clubs have focused their efforts on helping their fellow friends, teammates and classmates during this holiday season. Our students have not only had the opportunity to educate themselves, but have had the opportunity to become better individuals.

Our new members of the East PTSA Board along with returning Board members, are making tremendous contributions of their time and talent, to see to the effectiveness and continuity of this organization. There are still many volunteer opportunities available as well as many board member positions that need to be filled for the next school year.

We are grateful for your support, and look forward to seeing you at our next PTSA meeting on Thursday, January 11, 2018, at 9:00 am. Please join us in continuing this work for our students and school community.

Wishing each of you a happy, healthy and safe holiday season.

With sincere gratitude,

Lexie Dubell, PTSA Presidentand the PTSA Board
